    In this episode we interview French guitarist Antoine Boyer. Antoine has his roots in gypsy jazz, learning the guitar alongside his father at an early age. Then is his teens he went on to study classical guitar. In recent years he has moved into more modern jazz sounds by adding electric guitar to his palette of sonic choices. 

    He is an extraordinary talent with incredible taste and chops. He's only in his early 20s but yet has recorded 6 albums under his name. His most recent recording, Tangram, features Korean harmonica player Yeore Kim. This album is an incredible work and was featured on the Banjo Studio list of top albums made from 2021

    In this interview we talk about his roots, the guitars he plays, what to look for in a gypsy jazz style guitar, recording techniques, and more.

    Stef and James talk to Leo Appleyard - Jazz Guitarist, Electronic Producer and Educator. Leo talks about his journey through music, going from jazz guitarist to electro producer and how to collaborate with people.

    Over the past decade Leo has played/recorded with various artists - both in and out of the jazz idiom - including; Derek Nash, Jim Mullen, Duncan Eagles, Neil Yates, Max Luthert, Louie Palmer, Sam Leak, Paul Jordanous, Ted Carrasco, Simon Allen, Cat Delphi (BBC Radio 2 and o2 Islington) Gold of My own (Ronnie Scotts, The Barbican, North Face Festival, Larma Tree Fest), Mr Little’s Noisy Band, Will Gibson Ensemble, Redtenbacher's Funkestra.

     Aside from an active sideman/peformance career, Leo produces electronic/downtempo music under the moniker "Urchin" from his secluded island studio in South West London. The latest release "Take Time" (01.03.19) features Grace Walker (vocals) alongside long term collaborators Paul Jordanous (Trumpet), Chris Nickolls (Drums) and Holley Gray (Bass).

Royal is a Musician, Songwriter, Producer, Music Supervisor, Personal Manager, Executive Brand Consultant. He played with and was a founding member of Kool & the Gang. He established several Production Companies such as Bayyan Internationale’, “The Forecast”, America’s Best Entertainment, Spook Productions Inc.& Urban Media Sound. He is the CEO of Raven Entertainment Group Distribution, partnered with Nile Rogers’ & Andy Uteroni, worked as a consultant for National R&B Music Society, Good Tree Media, Mos Def Mgmt, RUFF RYDERS Entertainment, and others. 

    Royal, individually or collectively with his family, has discovered, managed, developed, or produced artists such as: Freddy Jackson, Gloria Gayner, Latoya Jackson, Ray, Goodman & Brown, The Main Ingredient, Mos-Def, Teddy Riley, Pink, The TUPAC Poetry Project, Color Me Badd, and many others. He was the New York Entertainment Coordinator at Harlem World Promotions, and the A&R Director of Black Music @ The Sound of New York Records with Gene Griffin. Between 1988 & 1989 Royal & Kool Bell sponsored and promoted the “Def Jam in the Motherland Tours” in Africa with  EPMD, Eric B and Rakim, and  LL Cool J. On top of that, he's an accomplished jazz guitarist, instrumentalist, and songwriter. 

    The topics of the interview include Royal's beginnings as an early member of Kool and the Gang, the problems and pitfalls of the music business, the art of record production, Bringing live hip hop concerts to Africa, the evolution of music production, surviving in the music business, an alternative perspective of the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on the music business, and the spiritual aspects of life as a professional musician and as a Muslim.
