This week on On Story, a conversation with Cord Jefferson on adapting the novel Erasure into his strikingly sharp debut feature American Fiction.

Cord Jefferson is an Emmy-winning writer who earned his chops on some of television’s most formative shows in recent years: Master of None, The Good Place, Succession, and Watchmen. His debut feature, American Fiction, won the Audience Award at the 30th annual Austin Film Festival.  

American Fiction is an adaptation of Percival Everett’s novel Erasure. The film introduces us to Thelonius Monk, played by Jeffrey Wright, a weary writer frustrated by the publishing industry’s obsession with reducing artists of color into stereotypes. In an effort to show the industry its own foolishness, Monk offers up a pandering manuscript that, much to his chagrin, becomes wildly successful.

Cord discusses bringing his own perspective and sense of humor to the source material, and marrying comedy and drama in one film.

In de Texaanse woestijn van de jaren vijftig ligt een stadje, wat één keer per jaar opleeft met de komst van een grote sterrenkijkersconventie. Het is typisch zo'n sluimerend plaatsje waar atoombommen worden getest en waar ufo's landen. En hier stranden Augie Steenbeck en zijn kinderen, als ze met de auto op weg zijn naar de vader van zijn overleden vrouw. Dit is Asteroid City. Althans, dat is het op een podium. Want Asteroid City is niet echt, het is de setting van een toneelstuk.

Voor filmdocent Rudi de Boer is dit – na The French Dispatch – de film waar regisseur Wes Anderon hem misschien voorlopig wel echt verloren heeft. De bonte cast aan filmsterren en de prachtige visuele stijl kunnen hem deze keer echt niet meer bekoren. Want alle lagen die Anderson over elkaar heen legt, maken de inhoud van de film deze keer te ondoordringbaar.

De Boer is een regelrechte veelkijker, en geeft in het hele land lezingen over films. Eventueel zelfs in sluimerende woestijnstadjes. En ook wordt hij geregeld te geïnterviewd op tv om zijn licht te schijnen op nieuwe ontwikkelingen in de filmwereld, als die weer de aandacht trekken van de redacties van o.a. RTL Nieuws et cetera.

Met host Ruud heeft hij het ook over hoe grote filmmakers altijd dezelfde film opnieuw maken, dat het nu Jason Schwartzman is die de gemankeerde vader speelt, en naturlijk over de AI-trailers van fictieve Wes Anderson-films.

Beeldsymmetrie, genoeg bekende acteurs om een kwartetspel te vullen en een zwierige soundtrack. Je zou bijna denken dat deze aflevering gaat over een film van Wes Anderson. En waarom niet helemaal? Want dan zou je gelijk hebben!

Host Ruud mag het eindelijk hebben over een van zijn favoriete filmmakers. En wel met betrekking tot diens nieuwste film The French Dispatch. Aan de overzijde van de praattafel zit Pim Meijerman, als afgevaardigde van het Arnhemse podkwartet de Filmerds.

En voor een notoire cynicus is hij nog opvallend mild! Pim is dan ook niet tegen de stijl en de toon van de filmmaker, het is vooral deze ene film die hem teleurgesteld heeft. Wist je trouwens dat het mogelijk was om een dik uur over Wes Anderson te praten, zonder het woord 'quirky' ook maar één keer te laten vallen? True story...

Verder gaat het ook over hoe incels en redpills ontstaan, en Pims geheime wens om mee te werken aan een Marvel-film, en ook leert Ruud nog het verschil tussen Randall en Steve Park.
