What We Do In The Shadows (2014)

What We Do In The Shadows (2014)
We here at Three Geeky Dads Podcast are thrilled at the fact that What We Do In The Shadows has just begun it's 5th season.
But we wanted to take a look back at the 2014 film that started it all. So, tonight, we take a look at one of our favorite "mockumentaries"...written and directed by Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, the film follows the (after) lives of a group of vampire room mates, sharing a flat in Wellington New Zealand.

Avatar 2: Can Spectacle Overshadow Storytelling?

Avatar 2: Can Spectacle Overshadow Storytelling?

In line to become the top-selling movie released in 2022, after it led the box office for a third weekend in a row, James Cameron’s latest offering has made more than $1.3 billion worldwide since its release on 16 December. Set more than a decade after the events of the first film, Avatar: The Way of Water continues the story of the Sully family and chronicles the lengths they will go to keep each other safe, and the battles they fight to stay alive.

But is it worth the 3h 12m runtime?

Join Michael Pisciuneri and special guests Luke Agius and Martin Yeung as we dissect this long-awaited sequel, which treads a fine line between spectacle, storytelling, and tried-and-true tropes. While The Way of Water repurposes themes and ideas from the first Avatar film, it also continues James Cameron’s overt commentary on our own society (and it certainly doesn’t hurt that it’s breathtakingly beautiful to watch). Tune in to hear our insights and hot takes when it comes to the epic visual effects in Avatar: The Way of Water

Taika Waititi - Eagle vs Shark

Taika Waititi - Eagle vs Shark
Taika Waititi seems to be successful no matter what genre he explores. From vampires, and pirates, to superheroes, and droids, Waititi has a gift for evoking emotion when and where you least expect it, even when a young boy's imaginary friend is Hitler, as such is the case in his Oscar and Grammy award-winning film, "Jojo Rabbit".

It is his directorial debut, "Eagle vs Shark", however, that allows Taika Waititi to explore two of his most bizarre characters in what can only be described as the quirkiest love story that can be told about misfits finding common ground, in order to find out about themselves.

21 - Kiwis in the Big Apple - Flight of the Conchords

21 - Kiwis in the Big Apple - Flight of the Conchords

Our humble adventurers learn about the scathing rivalry between Australia and New Zealand (by that we mean that every once in a while it is mentioned in a round-and-about way but we don’t take it too seriously and we mostly don’t take sides).

    Episode Breakdown:

    •  We kick this episode off by celebrating our 20th episode, despite the fact this is episode 21! (The Harry Potter Lockdown Bonus episode we did was not in our plans when we recorded this).
    • For our Tavern Talk segment, we’re thinking about a few statistics about our lives that we would be interested in knowing when we die and reach a higher state of being. Or something. (00:03:42).
    • We then move on to our main discussion, which is all about Flight of the Conchords!
    • We introduce the Flight of the Conchords comedy duo and the TV show (00:15:28).
    • We talk about the experience we had watching the show (00:19:35).
    • We discuss Flight of the Conchords’ strengths and weaknesses in different types of media (00:21:25).
    • We talk about the general feel or atmosphere of the show (00:24:18).
    • Ynon brings up how this show reminded him of Tenacious D’s TV show and we briefly compare the two (00:27:49).
    • We discuss the music that is in the Flight of the Conchords’ show (00:28:56).
    • We talk about our favorite parts from the series (00:29:56).
    • We talk about the character of Murray and his part in the show (00:32:14).
    • We talk about how this experience compares to other experiences we’ve had on previous episodes (00:36:04).
    • We talk about other things that Jemaine and Bret have done in their careers (we had to mention Figwit) (00:37:52).
    • We then ask the question that was on everyone’s mind: is Bret that hot? (00:41:59).
    • We then mention the Footloose reference in the last episode of the series (00:44:38).
    • We summarize our feelings towards Flight of the Conchords (00:45:37).
    • Then, Ynon introduces the subject of our next episode - Woody Allen’s Annie Hall (IMDb) (00:47:47).
    • Stick around and catch a promo for In Bed with Nikky (@DNikky162), you’ll want to get to know the Lovely Nikky! (00:51:04).
