Here we are at the 99th episode of the To Be Human podcast. As many of you have noticed I had quite the break from podcasting and have recently been uploading episodes that were recorded almost a year ago now. All shall be explained in the ever so vulnerable, poetically expressive and deeply authentic upcoming episode number 100. Where it will just be you, me, and the sharing of my journey vast of change, transformation and evolution. I am looking forward to connecting with you in my most transparent voice yet.

On today’s episode we have Loraine Van Tuyl. Loraine is a licensed clinical psychologist, a shamanic eco-psychologist and a depth hypnosis practitioner. She is the author of the beautiful book, ‘Soul Authority: Liberatory Tools to Heal from Oppressive Patterns and Restore Trust in Your Heart Compass’.

What I love about this conversation is Loraine’s deep, intuitive energy that pervades itself through this episode. Born in the Amazon she has this authentic connection to living in alignment with our true nature and the potent access to our own healing powers. We cover the Ego, the Soul, resistance, surrender, liberation, intergenerational trauma and how to live in harmonic expression of your Soul Authority. If you are looking to come home to yourself, this is the episode for you.

Please enjoy this special conversation with Loraine.

What I love about this conversation is Russ’s beautiful articulation and the way he breaks complex psychological concepts into simple understandings and action. It’s an enriching conversation around the relationship between the mind, psychological evolution and suffering, and we go deep into what happiness is, how the pursuit of it can ironically bring more sadness into your life, and what we can do to experience more of it.

Please enjoy this episode with Russ.

He is a speaker and author of 537 Days of Winter which is a beautiful memoir that explores his mental limits as an expedition and station leader for the Australian Antarctic Program.

What I love about this conversation is David’s strong leadership that is founded in the energy of strategy, humanity and getting the best outcome for both the program and people involved. He shares his mental and emotional experiences of spending 537 Days as a station leader in Antarctica and the challenges that come along the way in combination of remote leadership during a global pandemic.

What I personally love about this conversation is Melissa’s authentic passion surrounding the transformation and somewhat liberation of women in media. Melissa speaks to women taking their rightful place in the male-dominated industry; a true advocate for women and diversity in media. In this episode we explore the idea that, ‘when you only hear from men, you only hear half the story’. Please enjoy this conversation with Melissa.

What I love about this conversation is Sarah’s journey from leading a life she proclaims was ‘less ordinary’ in corporate, to deciding to make a change. Sarah puts this down to her innate pull to not settling, which influenced me to reflect, where in my life, where are you in your life, settling? The story from corporate to adventure, is one that is becoming more commonplace these days, but there remain still, people, some I daresay listeners of the To Be Human Podcast, that are yet to take the leap and give themselves permission to seek out their fulfilment and sense of aliveness. Sarah describes her journey as physically demanding, emotionally draining and mentally enlightening, and if you ask me, that is a life worth living! Be inspired and enjoy this conversation with Sarah.

What I love about this conversation is Eric’s purity shown through his articulated vulnerability and ownership. He has had a good go at passions in his life that haven’t necessarily resulted in what he dreamt, and it is a refreshing conversation to hear straight from Eric how this has affected him and what he has learnt and integrated moving forward. There is a lot of focus on chasing your dreams and achieving one’s goals, but what is it like to actually do everything you can and still not get there? When do we know when to persist and when do we know when to let go and try something new?

What I love about this conversation is Corey’s no holds barred authenticity. He is a straight to the point, living on the edge of convention kind of guy which is extremely refreshing. We discuss the topic of freedom, the importance of getting clear on your core value, and The Four Horseman of Fear that are holding you back from living the life you truly desire.

Corey poses the questions: What do you give a shit about and why do you give a shit about it? He shares that most people die in mediocrity and die regretting it, which flows onto the topic of mortality and how we can use the inevitability of death to live fully.

Please enjoy this conversation with Corey.

What I love about this conversation is Jessie’s vulnerability, strength and commitment to self-expression. Experiencing a somewhat numbing of the body and silence of the mind, Jessie has found her power through writing and speaking on the topics that culturally we tend to steer clear of. In this conversation we explore desire, the relationship between love and attachment, and the process of coming to feel safe in your own body. We also speak to the silence around suicide and the consequential grief that those close to them experience, and how others courage through fear can help the healing of those left in pain.

What I personally love about this conversation is Calvin’s depth of insight from travelling. This rare mix of both a medical mind and spiritual soul brings a beautiful entanglement of knowledge and inner knowing. We speak on the theme of freedom and Calvin shares this idea that, ‘What is freedom but to do what you want as an anonymous stranger’ which really spoke to me and my pull, particularly in my 20s having travelled to almost 50 countries, towards self-exploration and expression. On today’s podcast we have Bill Irvine. Bill holds a PHD in Philosophy and is a Philosophy Professor who not only teaches, thinks and writes about philosophy, but has adopted a philosophy of living known as Stoicism. He is the author of the book, ‘A Guide To The Good Life’.

What I love about this conversation is Bill’s ease in speaking about philosophy and particularly Stoicism as a way of life. At times academics can show up in a somewhat pretension and Bill certainly doesn’t do this, and I think it's because he genuinely practises what he preaches. He’s extremely passionate about making Stoicism available for everyone to at least try, at least apply, and see if you too can reap the benefits that he has. Stoicism is all about living a life of equanimity, meaning to be calm and maintain your emotions during difficult situations. Bill shares practical tools, some of which I personally apply in my own life, that can help you to take control of yourself, your reactions, and essentially live what the Stoics believe to be a good life.

What I love about this conversation is the difference between Zach and I, and how much I learned from him. As many of you know, I absolutely love endurance running. I love it for the experience, the adventure, the uncertainty and the unknown. And yes, Zach certainly runs for the experience, but to be a world record holder in running 100 miles on the track, it is necessary to remove as much as you can in relation to this uncertainty and the unknown. There is a lot of great advice right down to specificity in the conversation that will help with increasing your performance, and there is a lot we can learn from Zach in terms of commitment. It took Zach 6 years of dedication to achieve the world record, and we go deep on what supported him in staying on the path of greatness during those years.

What I love about this conversation is Karen’s absolute presence. As a leader of connection she shows up in a way that has you feel safe, heard and seen. This is certainly a vulnerable conversation as we delve into the darkness of connection, how disconnection can fuel distraction, numbing and addiction, and we explore the theme in the realm of Gabor Mate’s work, stop asking why the addiction and start asking why the pain. Connection is a biological imperative, and this isn’t just in relation to us and our surroundings, our relationships with others, but also our relationship with ourselves, and so in knowing that we discuss how to stop fearing ourselves and start being with ourselves.

Please enjoy this conversation with Karen.

What I love about this conversation is Jessica gets straight to the core of the patterns of disconnect that show up in our relationships. This is not about blame or judgement; this is about taking ownership of our experience with ourselves and other people through self-awareness. Jessica shares helpfully the four Attachment Styles that reflect the way in which we behave in relationship, and both in-moment and long-term strategies to guide us to a space of safety, security and connection. One of my favourite parts of this conversation is discussing attraction, and how we can learn to begin attracting people through chemistry over core wounding.

On today’s podcast we have Emma Carey. Nine years ago Emma was skydiving over the Swiss Alps when her instructor’s parachute failed to open properly. Falling 15,000ft, that’s around 4.5km, to the ground. Emma incredibly survived, but was paralysed from the waist down and told she would never walk again. In her new book, ‘The Girl Who Fell From The Sky’ she shares her story of courage, resilience, hope and her journey of coming to walk again.

What I love about this conversation is Emma’s beautiful spirit showing the evolution of her inner strength. Emma shares she wasn’t always the positively oriented person, living, as we do, in the ebb and flow of life, it wasn’t until her accident that she came to truly understand her relationship with her body and the appreciation of it. We explore the idea that as much as society focuses on the way that we should look, we are indeed not our body, and that our essence appears to be closer to the truth. She interestingly shares how being in a wheelchair influenced her to deeply want to walk again, and as she powerfully began to walk, thoughts arise that now she wants to run; it gives this beautiful insight into the human condition as how we generally are always focused on more, which to an extent can be great in terms of working towards expanding one’s potential, but we certainly also have to be accountable to when we continue to move the goalposts and do not appreciate what we have right now.

Please enjoy this conversation with Emma.

What I love about this conversation is the enrichment, full of depth, passion and love. This is genuinely one of my all time favourite conversations from the To Be Human podcast, and it’s one personally I will be listening back to more than once. I want you to go on your own journey in this one, so I won’t share too much of what is inside. I will share that we do derive a lot of our conversation on the lessons learnt from filming 55 days of the 3100 Self-Transcendence Run; a 3,100 mile run around less than 1km block in Queens, New York. We discuss the beautiful relationships between endurance and growth, the beauty and joy that can be found in suffering, and the mindset of those who finish this phenomenal feat. There is also a special contribution to my dear Australian friend Stephen Redfern at the end; he has just arrived in New York to experience his own path of self-transcendence. Stephen I will preface this now with saying, the beautiful Native American Navajo People believe that, ‘Mother Earth is also under the sidewalk.’ I am excited to further share this with you and with all.

For a lot of her life Jospehine has experienced what she describes as ‘obliterating pain’ and it is in this episode that she shares powerfully the meaning that she has been able to derive from the experience; a redefining of suffering. What I love about this conversation is the intersection between Sally’s firsthand experience of working with Indigenous communities in the 1950s and her perspective on the people within these communities. Sally has a profound belief that though we may be different from culture to culture, we are indeed one, and it is more about integration than assimilation between cultures. The most important lesson Sally learnt was to respect another’s culture and through her work with the Alternative Violence Project she also spans this out to people's individual journeys and experiences; that we should take time to know where one comes from to better understand where one is going.
