    TOP GUN (feat. Dorie Bailey)

    TOP GUN (feat. Dorie Bailey)

    Talk to me, Goose!

At last, the Cruise Missile crashes into Aya Vs. The Big Boys. This week, Aya, Kevin, and special guest Dorie Bailey take on TOP GUN (1986), Tony Scott's (totally not gay) airforce film/recruitment tool. A major stop in the Tom Cruise canon and a Big Boy for its masculine energy and "80's action film that's been given new consideration as a serious film" energy, TOP GUN is... A lot!

Aya, Kevin, and Dorie attempt to unpack the film's gaze, while struggling to get a basic grasp on what exactly the movie's about outside the greased up bodies and sexual tension. There's a surprising It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia reference, some basic discussion of Tony Scott's obsession with professional jargon, and a reckoning with the question that plagues TOP GUN: why doesn't it go all the way extreme?

You'll have to listen to find out!

Bob Kapoun: Owner, The Rainbow Man - Epi. 76, with Host Dr. Mark Sublette

Bob Kapoun: Owner, The Rainbow Man - Epi. 76, with Host Dr. Mark Sublette

Bob Kapoun, the owner of the historic Shop of the Rainbow Man in Santa Fe New Mexico, discusses the factors that led him down the path of dealing in Native American art. His interest in taking pictures during the Vietnam war led to an appreciation of photography and cinema, ultimately leading to a degree from Southern Illinois University and connecting Bob to the world of renowned photographer Edward S. Curtis.

Bob details his obsession with the culture and history of the Native Americans of the Southwest, the foundation lends to the authoring of books on Trade blankets and Cochiti pottery. Bob's reputation for contemporary Native art and trade blankets makes for a fascinating interview on this week's episode of the Art Dealer Diaries.

    Con Air (1997)

    Con Air (1997)
031 - It seems a crime that it has taken this long to get to a Nicolas Cage movie, but we kick of our first ever Cage-cast with a bang, digging into the iconic, Con Air. This was an interesting time for Cage, a turning point from quirky dramatic and comedic actor, to action star / fantastic weirdo, with Face / Off, The Rock, and this little gem coming out all within 14 months of each other - what a time to be alive! Does this movie hold up? Is it the prototype for the modern Bay-era blockbuster? Or simply a strange Forrest Gump spin-off? Should Cameron Poe's hair have receded much more after 10 years in prison? These are big questions, and we aren't afraid to go there.

    Limited Appeal - Hello Jerry

    Limited Appeal - Hello Jerry
In this episode's Nature Walk (with a dramatic echo), Warren describes a recent study of cockroaches (cool!) in which the studied shelter choice in cockroaches. (Ame et al., 2006, PNAS) Thanks for the science, folks! In their study, the authors released 50 cockroaches into a cage containing three enclosures that could contain 40 cockroaches each. The cockroaches split evenly to occupy two of the three shelters (25 in each shelter). When the shelters were enlarged to accommodate more than fifty, all the cockroaches moved into a single shelter (after some consultation and probing). Neat! Obviously this has big implications for collective decision making, but honestly we don't talk about those much. If you have suggestions for new B-movie screenplays involving giant insects, send them to us by email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net).
