    The Meaning of Christmas

    The Meaning of Christmas

In this special Christmas episode, Dominic shares a message from the gospel of John. What’s unique about this gospel is that, unlike the other gospels, John doesn’t give us the facts about Christmas. For example, there is no mention of the manger, the star or the wise men. Instead, he digs past the details and shares what Christmas means — not only theologically, but for our lives personally.

Augustine, the early church theologian once wrote: “Man’s maker was made man that He, Ruler of the stars, might nurse at His mother’s breast; that the Bread might hunger, the Fountain thirst, the Light sleep, the Way be tired on its journey; that Truth might be accused of false witnesses, the Teacher be beaten with whips, the Foundation be suspended on wood; that Strength might grow weak; that the Healer might be wounded; that Life might die.” The meaning of Christmas is unearthed when the truth and beauty of Jesus incarnation is considered. We hope you enjoy this episode!

    Luke 1:67-79

This Christmas, we are not just called to receive Him.  We are not just called to behold Him.  We are called to share Him.

May the blessings of God’s gift fill you so completely that it runs in you and through you and blesses those around you.  May your heart be filled with hope, peace, joy, and love this season and always.  Merry Christmas!

    Luke 7:36-50

Love Others Above Yourself - Christmas Episode 18

    1 John 3:16-18

“This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us.”  We are called to a different kind of death -
death to our selfish nature.  Death to the part of us who wants to be right, have our way, or seek our own good.

Can you think of a time that God asked you to show love to someone you didn’t particularly like or put someone else’s needs before your own (even though you didn’t want to)?

Be Made New in Love - Christmas Episode 16

Be Made New in Love - Christmas Episode 16

“Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up.”  Listen to this passage from the book of  Numbers and note the comparison Jesus is making between himself and the bronze snake.

“They traveled from Mount Hor along the route to the Red Sea. But the people grew impatient on the way;  they spoke against God and against Moses, and said, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread! There is no water! And we detest this miserable food!”

Then the Lord sent venomous snakes among them; they bit the people and many Israelites died.  The people came to Moses and said, “We sinned when we spoke against the Lord and against you. Pray that the Lord will take the snakes away from us.” So Moses prayed for the people.

The Lord said to Moses, “Make a snake and put it up on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” So Moses made a bronze snake and put it up on a pole. Then when anyone was bitten by a snake and looked at the bronze snake, they lived.”

JOY: Jesus, Others, Yourself - Christmas Episode 15

JOY: Jesus, Others, Yourself - Christmas Episode 15

    Keep me safe, O God,
for I have come to you for refuge.

I said to the Lord, “You are my Master!
Every good thing I have comes from you.”
The godly people in the land
        are my true heroes!
        I take pleasure in them!

Troubles multiply for those who chase after other gods.
I will not take part in their sacrifices of blood
or even speak the names of their gods.

Lord, you alone are my inheritance, my cup of blessing.
You guard all that is mine.
The land you have given me is a pleasant land.
        What a wonderful inheritance!

    I will bless the Lord who guides me;
even at night my heart instructs me.
I know the Lord is always with me.
I will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.

No wonder my heart is glad, and I rejoice.[b]
        My body rests in safety.
For you will not leave my soul among the dead[c]
or allow your holy one[d] to rot in the grave.

You will show me the way of life,
granting me the joy of your presence
and the pleasures of living with you forever.

Joy In Service - Christmas Episode 13

Joy In Service - Christmas Episode 13

    John 13:1-17

If we are seeking true joy, it won’t be found in self-service and gratification.  Serving others doesn’t seem fulfilling, but when we adopt the mindset of Christ and honor others above ourselves, we take on a servant-attitude and find we are filled with the peace and joy that Jesus promises.

Be Joyful - Devotional 11 from 12 Workouts of Christmas

Be Joyful - Devotional 11 from 12 Workouts of Christmas

But Paul and Barnabas traveled inland to Antioch

On the Sabbath they went to the synagogue for the services.  After the usual readings from the books of Moses] and the prophets, those in charge of the service sent them this message: “Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people, come and give it.”

16 So Paul stood, lifted his hand to quiet them, and started speaking. “Men of Israel,” he said, “and you God-fearing Gentiles, listen to me.

17 “The God of this nation of Israel chose our ancestors and made them multiply and grow strong during their stay in Egypt. Then with a powerful arm he led them out of their slavery.  He put up with them through forty years of wandering in the wilderness.  Then he destroyed seven nations in Canaan and gave their land to Israel as an inheritance.

All this took about 450 years.

Devotional 1 from 12 Workouts of Christmas

Perfect Peace - Devotional 10 from 12 Workouts of Christmas

Perfect Peace - Devotional 10 from 12 Workouts of Christmas

Our opening readings come from the book of Matthew and the book of John:

This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about[a]: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet[b] did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus,[c] because he will save his people from their sins.”

22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel”[d] (which means “God with us”).

This begins the long wait for the promise of a Messiah.  This long wait is the foundation of our hope.  During this Christmas season,  we remember how since Genesis 3, God’s  people have been waiting for the promise of the coming Messiah.

    Isaiah 40:1-5 & Luke 2:1-7

Just like Mary and Joseph awaiting the birth of Jesus, as we await the celebration of his birth, we have to prepare.  Just as one wouldn’t plant a seed and expect a harvest in the morning,  we must prepare ourselves - and our hearts - to receive the Lord.  Luke’s account of the birth of Jesus gives us the reason Jesus was born in a stable; there was no room for them at the inn.  As you move into this wonderful, yet busy, season, is there room for Jesus in your heart?  It is no less ironic that Jesus can stand on the periphery of our busy holiday schedules than it was that He, the Son of David, lay in a manger in a field on the periphery of the city of David?

As you prepare for Christmas and all God has in store for you in the new year, focus on preparing your heart.  Here are a few ways to prepare:

    Isaiah 9:1-7

“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; a light has dawned on  those living in the land of darkness.”

Isaiah's prophecies brought messages of  hope; hope of a coming light in the midst of darkness, and the fear and anxiety  that darkness can bring.

    John 8:12:

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Go through Isaiah 9:1-5 and circle all the words which speak of darkness or pain.

Each verse speaks about a promise. 9:1 spoke about honor; 9:2 about light. What about 9:3?

Hope While Waiting - Devotional 4 from 12 Workouts of Christmas

Hope While Waiting - Devotional 4 from 12 Workouts of Christmas

    Deuteronomy 31:1-6

Moses gave Joshua a promise in this passage, and this promise remained true even during the Intertestamental Period (the 400 year period between the Old Testament and the Gospel of Matthew).  It appeared that God was absent, but He wasn’t.  He hadn’t forgotten His promise; He would send a rescuer, a second Elijah, to rescue them.  This promise begins a long period of waiting and of hope for God’s people.
