Grasping at Air - The Books of Jeremiah, 2 Chronicles, & 2 Kings

Grasping at Air - The Books of Jeremiah, 2 Chronicles, & 2 Kings

In this Bible Story, we learn about King Zedekiah’s stubbornness against the Babylonians. He fights against them despite Jeremiah’s warnings. Jeremiah continues to warn people that fighting against Babylon is a vain attempt - like grasping at air. This story is inspired by 2 Chronicles 36:10-16 & 2 Kings 24:18-25:2 & Jeremiah 37. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is Jeremiah 37:17 from the King James Version.

Episode 158: Jeremiah, still captive in the courthouse of Judah, was praying to God when he received a Word from Him that Hanamel would soon be coming to sell him his land in Anathoth. But this was about more than relieving his uncle of a burden, it was God’s way of showing the people what He would do for them. So Jeremiah continued to preach the Word of God to the people and he continued to receive beatings from them. One day, he was summoned by King Zedekiah to give him the truth of the situation and though he spoke honestly to the King, he did not follow Jeremiah’s advice. Yet even as the gates of the courthouse were being broken down, God protected Jeremiah and gave him mercy.

Finding Comfort and Healing in Loss

Finding Comfort and Healing in Loss

Today, we explore the grief and loss of a loved one. We will also talk about how to comfort others in times of grief and loss. Jesus Wept, is the shortest scripture in the Bible. However, it's so much more than a simple scripture of two word. Jesus mourning the loss of his friend Lazarus teaches how truly fully man and fully God, Jesus was on earth. He was not only theSon of God who would raise Lazarus from the dead, but also cry openly over the loss of a loved one.
It's okay not to be okay.
    In fact, crying is good.
Let's talk about how to grieve and comfort those in their time of need.

    Lazarus - The Gospels

    Lazarus - The Gospels

In this Bible Story, the sting of death is thwarted when Jesus raises Lazarus from the dead. With tears in his eyes and a booming voice, Jesus calls Lazarus out of the tomb and back to life. This story is inspired by John 11:1-53 & 12:9-11. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.

Today's Bible verse is John 11:43 from the King James Version.

Episode 204: Lazarus, one of Jesus’ close friends and the brother of Mary and Martha, was dying. As they sat by their brother, they sent word for Jesus to come at once to visit His friend. When Jesus finally arrived in Bethany, Lazarus had been dead for four days. But this could not stop what God had planned for that day. Jesus comforted Lazarus’ sisters and went to the tomb of His friend. Then after having the stone rolled away, He called for Lazarus…and Lazarus came out of the tomb.

    Jesus Raises Lazarus

    Jesus Raises Lazarus

Mary and Martha sent for Jesus when their brother, Lazarus, got sick. When Jesus arrived at the home of these good friends, Lazarus had already been dead for four days and was buried in a tomb. Jesus raised Lazarus back to life.

Before raising Lazarus, Jesus grieved with his friends. Jesus cares when we are sad.

Bible verses used in this episode:

    Outline:

    1. Lazarus is sick, so Jesus is asked to come (John 11:1-3)
    2. Jesus responds to the news (John 11:4-16)
    3. Jesus talks to Martha and Mary (John 11:17-37)
    4. Jesus raises Lazarus (John 11:38-44)
    5. People react (John 11:45-46)

    Tips for teaching:

    • Children can sing the song "Cast Your Burdens."
    • For a game, children can have a race to wrap toilet paper around someone and then unwind it again without breaking it,
    • Children can list their worries and concerns, and then the class can pray for them.
    • Adults can explore the meaning of the glory of God.  Read John 11 verses 4 and 40.  Talk about how the raising of Lazarus reveals the glory of God.
    • What does the "glory of God" mean in your life?

With Adger on the mic, both Bryant and Nicole have a wonderful time recalling his childhood in Columbus, OH, weekend trips to New York to hear jazz greats eventually moving in with his mentor Gordon Parks, and falling out of his seat twice when it was time for a gorgeous nude model to disrobe. From encounters with the Fondas on the set of Golden Pond, to Sidney Poitier running out of the room when setting eyes on Adger's photograph of Diahann Carroll in a bikini, to punching a colleague in the face just to turn around and ask for a signature making Adger the first Black photographer in International Cinematographers Guild Local 600.  Adger Cowans is the supreme example of a life well lived and now, in his mid-80s, he's busier than ever.

    Jesus Was Agitated

    Jesus Was Agitated

We are continuing the conversation we started yesterday about the Raising of Lazarus in John 11. We focus on the phrase that is used in John 11:33 and 11:38. Jesus was moved in his spirit. The whole thing didn't sit well with Jesus, Why? It seems like Jesus already knew what would happen. Why be angry or sad? Listen and I'll talk through it.

    Death Has No Victory

Today we are continuing in the Gospel of John with more encounters with Jesus. Today is a bit longer because the scripture is John 11:1-44 and it is the Raising of Lazarus. I know that this a familiar story but there is so much complexity here that we could spend a whole week on it. Take a listen to the start of the conversation.

Dear Hurt & Grieving (Letters To The Hurting)

Dear Hurt & Grieving (Letters To The Hurting)

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Psalm 34:18

Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Matthew 5:4

Rounding out this Letters To The Hurting series, we are ending on a subject matter that is difficult but necessary.  So many are hurting due to grief; both in the church and in the world at large.  We know many are walking paths of silent sorrow and the journey through pain of loss can be a hard road.  Still, we are called to minister to those who are dealing with such things.  We are to point to Christ in all matters, knowing He suffered as well and was acquainted with grief.

We hope this series has been a helpful one, whether you fall into any of these categories or know of someone who is battling these things (weariness, insecurity, doubt, worry, and grief).  The podcast is taking a small break for the rest of October.  It will resume again next month but until then, please feel free and go back to other episodes you may have missed.  And we always appreciate it when you SHARE these messages!  God bless.  See you soon.

How Could I Love a God Like That?

How Could I Love a God Like That?

Part 5 of 23 in the extended series "Belonging to Him," which takes an in-depth look at the Gospel through the lens of personal relationship. There exists in the human condition—from the heart of both believers and non-believers—something called "The Problem of Evil." We ask the question: 'How could a loving God allow so much evil and suffering?' And from a relational standpoint we might ask this: 'How could I love a God like that?' Drawing from one of the most emotionally-stirring accounts in Jesus’ life, this sermon seeks to answer that question (sermon recorded in 2018).

Jesus Wept: On Grief and Reincarnation

Jesus Wept: On Grief and Reincarnation

It's helpful to talk about grief. It's helpful to try to wrap our heads around it—in part because we are, at least momentarily, removed from the all consuming nature of it and allowed to conceptualize its theory. Philosophy gives us a break in that way.

In this episode, I tell the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead and then share a bit about what I make of all of it. I also tell a personal story of grief. It's harder to talk about that. I talk about reincarnation, too. At the end of all of it, I share some thoughts on how ordinary mortals like you and me can connect with loved ones lost. It's a rambly one, for sure.

    Grateful for you.

025 – Preparing for Easter in a Changed World: Jesus Raises Lazarus from the Dead

025 – What is the best way to prepare our hearts for Easter?

When we take the time to get ready spiritually for the significance of the resurrection in our lives, we get a deeper sense of what Easter is all about.

In this week's episode, I explore the time Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead as a way to get us ready for Easter.

    • Why did Jesus wait for two days before he went to see Lazarus?
    • Why did Jesus say Lazarus was sleeping when he was already dead?
    • "Jesus wept." Why (it's not what you've been told)?
    • How does the story of Lazarus help us understand that life is eternal?
