Videos showed officers firing slingshots at protesters and beating up an ambulance crew. Demonstrators have been flooding the streets since a military coup toppled the democratically elected government a month ago. Classifying the party as a “suspected case” of extremism allows Germany’s intelligence service to spy on its members. AfD is not the first party to come under surveillance. Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist, was suffocated and dismembered inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul in 2018. Last week America released an intelligence report that blamed Muhammad bin Salman, the crown prince and de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia, for ordering the operation that resulted in Khashoggi’s death. But President Joe Biden did not directly punish Prince Muhammad, judging the diplomatic cost too high. Nor will the trial in Turkey result in any real accountability. All of the defendants have left the country. Last year a Saudi court did jail eight people for between seven and 20 years over the murder. None of the defendants was named.
