WP Welcomes Back Writer Rich Eng & Bloodstock Guru Joe Nevills

WP Welcomes Back Writer Rich Eng & Bloodstock Guru Joe Nevills
Richard Eng covers the Horse Racing industry. Handicapping for Dummies is one of the many handicapping books he wrote. He also is a writer for Las Vegas Review Journal and the Daily Racing Form. Rich will give us a “final edit update” on his revisions of the popular “Betting on Horse Racing for Dummies,” a must-have book he penned for teaching anyone about the basics of the racing game. Rich will join John to review the unbelievable card that Parx will present on Saturday. You'll need your E-Z Win Forms as opportunities abound. The 13-race day kicks off at 12:05 pm and features 10 stakes races! There will be five consecutive graded stakes headed up by star-studded line-ups in the afternoon’s feature races. Cyberknife and Taiba, separated by a head in the Grade 1 Haskell at Monmouth Park, head a field of 11 3-year-olds entered Monday for Saturday’s Grade 1, $1 million Pennsylvania Derby at Parx. In addition to Cyberknife and Taiba, the field includes two additional Grade 1 winners - Zandon and White Abarrio. Secret Oath, the Kentucky Oaks winner, will face eight opponents but will not have to face her recent nemesis, Nest in the Grade 1, $1million Cotillion for 3-year-old fillies. Secret Oath, trained by D. Wayne Lukas, is coming into the race off back-to-back runner-up finishes to Nest in the Coaching Club American Oaks and Alabama. The connections of Nest did not want to cut back to 1 1/16 miles and are looking at either the Grade 2 Beldame on Oct. 9 or training up to the Breeders’ Cup Distaff on Nov. 5. Joe Nevills, Bloodstock Editor of The Paulick Report, will take a well-deserved break from the seemingly endless stream of eye-catching thoroughbreds making their way to the Keeneland Sales Pavilion over the past week. With 2,180 yearlings sold so far, we’ll just ask Joe to weigh in on a few of the many million-dollar babies. Cumulatively, 2,180 yearlings have sold through the ring for $389,605,000, an increase of 14.69 percent over the same period last year when 2,125 horses sold through the ring for $339,691,500. Average price of $178,718 is up 11.80 percent from $159,855 in 2021, while the median of $100,000 is 11.11 percent above last year’s $90,000. This year’s sale has 12 sessions compared to 11 sessions in 2021, and it ain’t over yet folks. The September Sale runs through Saturday. Those who follow Joe on Facebook are often treated to his real-life adventures. One that caught our eye was his search for an aging horse called Mary Murphy, named after his grandmother. After reading about the trail her life took after racing and the outcome of his search for her, has all the elements of an upcoming feature with the Joe Nevills byline.

WP Welcomes Writer Joe Nevills and Race Caller Ed Meyers

WP Welcomes Writer Joe Nevills and Race Caller Ed Meyers
Eclipse-Award winning writer Joe Nevills can be found observing the action at all of the sales and the action filled observatory of future stars from the pavilion’s “Back Ring.” We will be talking this week with Joe about trends in the breeding game and the landscape of the current state of horse sales in general. The latest issue of the Back Ring is now online, ahead of the Keeneland January Sale. The Back Ring is the Paulick Report's bloodstock newsletter, released ahead of, and during, every major North American Thoroughbred auction. Seeking to expand beyond the usual pdf presentation, the Back Ring offers a dynamic experience for bloodstock content, heavy on visual elements and statistics to appeal to readers on all platforms, especially mobile devices. Here is what's inside this issue… * Lead Feature, presented by Gainesway: Bloodstock editor Joe Nevills makes five fearless predictions for the bloodstock market in 2022 in his “Making Claims” column. * Stallion Spotlight, presented by New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Inc.: The New York Thoroughbred Breeders, Inc. Stallion Season Auction is a crucial fundraiser for the breed organization each year, but the 2022 renewal reaches even further to help those recovering from the December tornadoes in Kentucky. * Ask Your Veterinarian, presented by Kentucky Performance Products: Dr. Craig Lesser of Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital explains what horse owners should take into consideration to protect hooves during the winter months. * Pennsylvania Leaderboard, presented by Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association: How Li'lbito'charm, a daughter of Smarty Jones, brought in six figures worth of Pennsylvania incentive earnings for her connections in 2021 without entering a single stakes race. * This weekend brings informal preps for Kentucky Derby points preps at Tampa Bay Downs and Santa Anita, plus older horses in the Sunshine Classic and Sprint at Gulfstream. For insight into these races we are bringing in Kentucky’s Finest – no, not a 12-year-old barrel aged Bourbon – handicapper extraordinaire, Ed Meyer. Here are a few of the races where we hope betting opportunities abound. The Pasco at Tampa Bay Downs, 7 furlongs, 3-year-olds is an interesting event for the boys. After two tries in the fall at Belmont Park, Provocateur broke his maiden with a 4 1/2 length win last month at Tampa Bay Downs. Cattin graduated on debut at Gulfstream in July then came up short in two Florida Sire stakes before winning the black-type Inaugural. The Gasparilla at Tampa Bay Downs, 7 furlongs, is for3-year-old fillies. After a third-place effort on debut in July, Outfoxed won two Florida Sire stakes at Gulfstream but hasn't raced since September. Bill Mott has had her in training at Payson Park since. Out west they will contest the California Cup Oaks at Santa Anita, 1 mile (turf), 3-year-old fillies This field is expected to see four starters return from the black-type Soviet Problem Stakes at Los Alamitos.

Smoke to the West pushed back the Santa Anita season and Belmont Park in the East has delayed the start until September 25th, so John and Eric Wing from Horse Tourneys are heading North to Woodbine. On Saturday, the $1 million Ricoh Woodbine Mile and the Singspiel, a G3 event with a $125,000 purse. On Sunday, 2-year-olds are featured in two “Win and You’re In” races. The boys will match strides in the G1, $250,000 Summer Stakes and fillies are featured in the G1, $250,000 Natalma. The Paulick Report’s Bloodstock Editor Joe Nevills will discuss the trends evolving at the recent Keeneland Sale. Top stallions Tapit and Into Mischief kept leap frogging each other as the bids got higher. We are also seeing new partnerships being formed between top outfits going for sale toppers. Joe will weigh in on how Covid restrictions may impact the purchasing and also update us on some of the top females in racing which are being offered as racing and/or broodmare prospects in the later Fall Sales.

WP Welcomes Back Award Writer Joe Nevills and Handicapper Tom Law
This will be Joe Nevills' first interview on WinningPonies since becoming a Eclipse Award winner for Feature/Commentary Writing. “It’s just one of those things you dream of doing, like hitting a Grand Slam to win Game 7 of the World Series,” Nevills said about winning an Eclipse Award. In “Biting The Dust: A Long Goodbye to Mount Pleasant Meadows,” Nevills tells the story of the demise of a small mixed-breed track in central Michigan through the eyes of trainer Nate Funnell, jockey Lee Gates, track announcer and marketing director Scott Csernyik, and through his own personal recollections of a place where he learned and enjoyed horse racing beginning with his family at age four. Tom Law will join us as we enter 2020 to review The Best Of the decade. It could be horses, jockeys, races, trainers or trends in racing. We will see where the conversation takes us, just two guys talking horses.
