Ep. 48: Carey Kight: From Air Force Bombs to Silver Screen Dreams | Veterans Shaping New Frontiers

Flying high from loading bombs in the Air Force to launching stories on screen, Carey Kight lands in our latest episode to share the trajectory of his remarkable career. His tales crisscross the heartland of Columbus, Ohio to the bustling sets of the entertainment industry, revealing how a blue-collar work ethic and a creative spirit can intertwine to shape a fulfilling post-service life. Carey's ambition to spotlight the Midwest's untapped potential in film and advertising shines through, as does his dedication to family, illustrating the many dimensions of this veteran's vibrant journey.

Picture a world where military discipline is the secret weapon in the arsenal of entrepreneurship—Carey pulls back the curtain on this concept by walking us through lessons in decentralized command and the power of influence over strict hierarchy. He challenges the stereotypes that often overshadow veterans, bringing to light the adaptability and diverse skills honed through service, which he has successfully channeled into his own production company and beyond. This episode isn't just a conversation; it's a masterclass in rewriting the narrative of what veterans can achieve in civilian life.

Rounding off, we turn the spotlight onto the Veteran Made Podcast, Carey's labor of love that celebrates and connects veterans carving out new creative and entrepreneurial paths. Each episode is a piece of a larger puzzle, piecing together the stories of resilience and innovation that color the lives of those who've served. As Carey dives into the growth of his podcast and the vibrant community it fosters, listeners are invited to join a movement that honors the enduring impact of veterans and the remarkable chapters they continue to write beyond the battlefield.

    Warrior (2011) - Full Review

Episode 42 - Warrior (2011) - Full Review Movie Podcast

"Warrior" is a 2011 American sports drama film directed by Gavin O'Connor. The movie follows the story of two estranged brothers, Tommy and Brendan, who enter a mixed martial arts (MMA) tournament each for their own reasons.
Tommy, an ex-Marine with a troubled past, seeks revenge against his father who was abusive to him and his mother. Brendan, a former MMA fighter, is struggling to provide for his family after losing his job as a teacher.

The movie's story is well-crafted and keeps the viewers engaged throughout. The intense action scenes in the ring are well-choreographed, and the emotional moments between the characters are equally impactful. The acting performances of the lead actors, Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton, are top-notch and bring the necessary depth to their characters.
The supporting cast, including Nick Nolte as the father of the two brothers, delivers great performances that add to the film's overall quality. The movie's soundtrack is also noteworthy, adding to the film's already gripping atmosphere.

"Warrior" is not just a sports movie; it's a family drama that explores themes of forgiveness, redemption, and the bond between siblings. It presents an honest and gritty portrayal of the MMA world and shows the physical and emotional toll it takes on its fighters.

Overall, "Warrior" is an excellent movie that seamlessly blends action, drama, and emotion. It's a must-watch for sports enthusiasts, movie lovers, and anyone looking for an engaging and inspiring film.

Animal Kingdom (2010) - Full Review

Animal Kingdom (2010) - Full Review

As Australian Film month winds down we take a decided turn away from Crocodile Dundee and head south to Melbourne. Animal Kingdom is a cautionary tale about a family bonded together by crime until someone from the inside turns their film upside down.

The first feature film of Director David Michod, who also wrote the screenplay, this is Australian filmmaking at its finest, albeit grittiest. Whilst it didn’t do very well at the box office it was received in glowing terms by the critics and has since spawned an American Tv Series of the same name that lasted six seasons.

An all-star Australian cast led by Joel Edgerton, Ben Mendelson and Jackie Weaver show what experts in their craft can do with a quality script and a Director that has complete faith in his actors. This was the movie that started Ben Mendelson’s climb back into Hollywood and after this he would find himself in some of the biggest movies of the next decade.

Jackie Weaver who plays the Matriarch of the family “Smurf” gets a very well-earned Oscar nomination and if it wasn’t for such a stacked year she may have taken the top gong.

This is a movie that lives within the realm of subtlety and there isn’t a scene in the film that should be replaced. Haunting performances will ensure that Animal Kingdom will be forever known as one of the very best pieces of Australian cinema for all time.

    Thirteen Lives (2022)

    Thirteen Lives (2022)

We don't typically cover based-on-a-true-story films, but Thirteen Lives (2022) directed by Ron Howard seemed worth a watch. A retelling of the June 2018 incident where twelve Thai adolescents and their soccer coach were trapped in a flooded cave for 18 days and in need of rescue. Jason Furie and Adam Roth break it down and try and figure out why Viggo Mortensen and Colin Farrell are so unrecognizable here.

Little Tornadoes + Ablaze + a new short film by Nash Edgerton

Little Tornadoes + Ablaze + a new short film by Nash Edgerton

Writer-director Aaron Wilson on Little Tornadoes, his beautiful portrait of life in small town Australia in 1971, a time when the country was swept up in change. Opera singer Tiriki Onus on his debut film Ablaze, where together with filmmaker Alec Morgan he uncovers a 70-year-old lost film made by the first Aboriginal filmmaker, his grandfather William ‘Bill’ Onus. Plus, Nash Edgerton joins us from Dublin to talk about his latest film, a short about a couple of pranksters which he stars in alongside Rose Byrne called Shark, set to play at St Kilda Film Festival.

118: The Getaway (1972) and Midnight Special (2016)

118: The Getaway (1972) and Midnight Special (2016)

On the lam is the theme for this week. Sam Peckinpah's "The Getaway" (1972) is based on the pulp novel written by Jim Thompson and stars Steve McQueen. With all that going for it, you'd think it would be a really good film, but it's just not. It's not bad but could have been better with a recast of the two leads. "Midnight Special" (2016) is the opposite as Michael Shannon heads a great cast for this pseudo-sci fi thriller. Matt wishes this cast could do a remake of "The Getaway". Definitely underrated.

Next, I love this stupid movie with "Rhubarb" (1951) and "The Stoned Age" (1994).

    Thanks for listening!

    The Thing (2011)

    The Thing (2011)

Ever wonder what happened before MacReady and the boys went toe-to-toe with alien terror in John Carpenter's 1982 classic The Thing? Well, we didn't really, either, but leave it to Hollywood to show us the mysterious backstory that Carpenter's film left tantalizingly out of reach. 2011's The Thing, a sort of grotesque, body-horror hybrid of prequel and remake, takes place a few days before the original and tells the tale of the Norwegian research base that made the colossal mistake of not letting sleeping extraterrestrials lie. Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen, Jr. and starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Edgerton, the film is similar to its predecessor not only in its story and visuals, but also in the critical and box-office disappointments it suffered on its release. But, hey, it turned out that Carpenter's film was actually pretty incredible -- can the same be said about this long-in-development return to Antarctica? Chris and Nick break it down in the last of our reviews of Carpenter-adjacent projects, taking a look at the film's controversial CGI visual FX, van Heijningen's direction, the little details that make this a very faithful prequel to the '82 version, and lots more! Plus, Nick checks out a trippy slice of forgotten 70s horror, Chris recommends another stellar film from South Korea, and the guys preview the grand finale (for now) of this very podcast!

    The Green Knight (2021)

    The Green Knight (2021)

The Green Knight is a bold new fantasy film from A24 based on the timeless Arthurian legend. Jason Furie and Adam Roth give their full review and spend a significant amount of time debating whether or not this can be considered a "dark fantasy" film. We discuss stars Dev Patel, Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton and sprinkle in more fun facts about this film, the Star Wars universe, and Kevin Bacon. We talk about Kevin Bacon way too much in this one.
