The Heritage of Golf and the Society That Protects It

The Heritage of Golf and the Society That Protects It

Golf has a long and storied history. There is an organization that has been created to protect that legacy and gather the artifacts that tell the story of the evolution of golf from the sheep meadows of scotland to the well amicured clubs of today. That organization is cakked The Golf Heritage Society. The President of the Society, Bern Bernacki, is our guest this week on Those Weekend Golf Guys Show. Bern tals about the annual meeting and Show and Sale of golf memorabilia from private collectors around the world. This year it will be held in Lexington Kentucky iin October of this year. If you have an interest in the game and the origins and some of the collectible elements you should make it a point to travel to Lexuibgton in October. But today just listen as we talk about the history and many other interesting tidbits of information about Golf in America.

Not Happy With A 4 Over Par Round - Made These Mistakes

Not Happy With A 4 Over Par Round - Made These Mistakes

This week on Those Weekend Golf Guys John brags about a 4 over par round. And Jeff spends the rest pf the show explaining why he should be ashamed telling him all the things he did wrong. Actually not all. John mentioned he hit all but 2 greens in regulation so Jeff immediately wonders how bad his putting had to be. Jeff actually gives good advice to John for the next time and to everyone else who listens on how not to “blow” birdie chances with bad chipping and putting once you finally get your Tee shots on the fairway and your approach shots on the green. Listen now and your next round will be better of you listen to the advice of Golf Magazine Top100 Teacher, Jeff Smith.

Don't Practice 'Till You Get It Right. Practice 'Till You Can't Get It Wrong

Don't Practice 'Till You Get It Right. Practice 'Till You Can't Get It Wrong

This week Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher, Jeff Smith, shares some ideas on how to practice much more effectively. He not only gives ideas on how to create and execute some effective drills at home for mere pennies but he also explains how to set up a practice area at home that will show you the effects of every shot without the expense of a big dollar simulator. We also have an interesting conversation with Brent Paschal of Safe Play Golf about his Monster Mat (must be said with your best Bobby ·Boris· Picket voice). His Monster Mat feels just like hitting off grass at the course. Get one of these, a net, a sheet and some duct tape and you have a fully functional practice area in your very own home. See the Monster Mat at either safeplaygolf.com or monstermat.golf

    I Don't Move That Way

    I Don't Move That Way

So many times after a lesson we get out on the range with what we’ve just been taught fresh in our minds and we start to practice and…it doesn’t work. Are we doing it wrong? Did we misunderstand? Probably not. Probably the problem is our body doesn’t move the way it should to accomplish the desired effect of the techniques we’ve just been taught. Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher, Jeff Smith, this week talks about ways a teacher, or even you yourself, can run some diagnostics to determine how well your body can move and how you should swing the club accordingly. Sawing plane, swing path, ball position and body position all depend on how your body moves, on how far your hips turn and many more elements of movement that Jeff explains in great detail. And also, there is a video version of the podcast this week on YouTube. 4 Reasons Your Ball Goes Right And How To Fix It

4 Reasons Your Ball Goes Right And How To Fix It

There are four things you can do that will cause your ball to go to the right (or the left if you are a left-handed golfer). This week Golf Magazine Top 100 Teacher Jeff Smith explains not only what you may be doing to cause your ball to go right but will explain, in great detail, how to stop your ball from going to the right. Most recreational golfers have a problem with slicing (although John Ashton refers to it as a “Power Fade”). If this is your main problem on the course, rejoice! The fix is at hand. Enjoy this episode of Those Weekend Golf Guys and get out there and hit it straight.

If You Don't Need Lessons - Think Again

If You Don't Need Lessons - Think Again

This week on Those Weekend Golf Guys, The Secomd Best Golf Show In The World, we show you exactly why you DO need golf lessons, even though you have convinced yourself you don·t. We also try to convince you to get fit for your next set of golf clubs, even thought you might think it a waste of money. Jeff describes his lecture to the Top 100 Golf Teachers on how to differentiate students problems between equipment and technique. That flashy new driver you wany may turn out to be a total waste of money. There may be a better head, a more suitable shaft. Maybe it·s not your swing but your equipment. Want to be the best you can be> You need to know that everything you have is right for you from clubs to balls to position to swing

Use A Fairway Wood From a Bunker? Are You Crazy?

Use A Fairway Wood From a Bunker? Are You Crazy?

No actually, we are NOT crazy! A fairway wood or a Hybrid club, with the weight at the bottom and large sole plate, are perfect for scraping along the sand and getting your ball out and advanced from a fairway bunker. This week Jeff Smith, one of Golf Magazines Top 100 Teachers, explains how when and how to use a fairway wood or a Hybrid club out of a fairway bunker. He also explains how to properly use the Hybrid clubs and fairway woods from both the rough and the fairway. He explains proper setup, ball position, club position and all the elements to successfully get your ball further down the fairway. Here’s a hint: the club position for his Hybrid clubs is very similar to the position for his six iron (just a smidge forward of center. Of course these suggestions’ come with the same caveat as all our weekly suggestions: practice the shots to get comfortable with how they work best for you.

Two Shots You Should Master For Lower Scores

Two Shots You Should Master For Lower Scores

Jeff Smith, one of Golf Magazine’s Top 100 teachers, gives you 2 shots to use around the greens today. They are both almost magic when it comes to improving your short game. First is the Hinge & Thump shot, And the second he calls the Firm Handed Scrape. Both of these shots describe the motion used in executing them and both can be used with many different clubs for many different scenarios. But what is for sure is that once you have both of these shots in your arsenal your short game will improve seriously and quickly.

    Are Your Clubs Worn Out?

    Are Your Clubs Worn Out?

How long does it take for golf clubs to wear out? How can you tell if your clubs are worn out? This week, Those Weekend Golf Guys try to explain the various ways to tell if your clubs are still working “up to par” or if they need to be repaired, regripped, or replaced. Will new grips help> Are the grooves worn? Which clubs wear out fastest and do you have to replace the whole set or can you do club by club, one at a time? These are all questions you may find when answered, the reason you are not scoring as well as you’d like is your clubs aren’t up to snuff and need to be fixed or replaced.

    Play Within Yourself

    Play Within Yourself

This week Jeff Smith, a Golf Magazine Top 100 teacher and co-host of Those Weekend Golf Guys show offers some invaluable advice: Play Within Yourself. In short, don’t do more than your abilities, your body, and your equipment can do. For instance, if you are taking your second shot into a par 4 hole with something higher than a 7,8,9, or wedge, you need to move up a tee or two. Don’t let your ego ruin the fun of golf by frustrating you because you are doing stuff you are not capable of doing. Don’t try to be a superhero, the cape often times gets tangled around the shaft of the club.

    Autism Helped His Career

    Autism Helped His Career

This week Those Weekend Golf Guys are happy to feature 5 time PGA Tour winner and current Champion’s Tour member, Billy Mayfair. Billy has been a champion since very early in life having won many Junior Golf Tournaments, College and Professional Tournaments. Billy is the only person to beat Tiger Woods in a Playoff!. Billy is autistic. But he has only been diagnosed as autistic later in life. In retrospect, the autism diagnosis has taught him much about himself and helped him understand why he has acted the way he has throughout the years. In fact, Billy credits his autism to his success in golf. Listen to this week’s show as Billy Mayfair recounts his career highlights and how his autism figured to have effected it so positively. It’s an interesting, informative and entertaining hour of Golf Talk Radio once again with the second best golf show in the world, Those weekend Golf Guys.

There Is No Right Or Wrong Way To Play Golf

There Is No Right Or Wrong Way To Play Golf

Those weekend Golf Guys are here this week with their semi-regular reminder that there is no “right” or “wrong” way to play golf. There are ways to swing the club that are not compatible with your body’s motion. There are ways to move that might be inhibited by your flexibility, or lack thereof. But keep in mind there are myriad ways to be successful at this game. Some have short backswings (like Jon Rahm). Others have long backswings (like Justin Thomas). Jeff Smith, one of Golf Magazines Top 100 Teachers, also describes the transition; that short period of time when the backswing stops and the downswing begins. Get this right for you and your game will improve noticeably. This is one of those programs where a simple listen (OK. Maybe take some notes too) will make you a much better golfer the very next time you head out to the course.

    USGA-Roll Back This!

    USGA-Roll Back This!

The USGA and The R7A are proposing a new rule that will “Roll Back” the golf ball. They think the ball is too hot and is making some of the golf courses the PGA Tour plays on obsolete. Well, Jeff Smith and John Ashton think that would be a stupid thing for the USGA and the R&A to do and mince no words in a scathing attack on the idea on this week’s Those Weekend Golf Guys Show. As Jeff says, “since you are so good, we have to penalize you”. There is a perfect answer to this problem, and its not to “roll back” the golf ball so it doesn’t fly as far. It sounds like the proposal would reduce a 300 yard drive by about 15 yards. The answer is “agronomy”. Plant some trees, build some bunkers, keep the rough a bit rougher, narrow the fairways. There are lots of things to do to cut back the distance of the world’s “Elite Golfers” without ruining the golf experience for the rest of us.

107 Reasons More Women Should Play Golf

107 Reasons More Women Should Play Golf

OK, maybe 107 reasons is a bi9t of an exaggeration. But we do have some great reasons why more women need to play golf and a bunch of ideas on how to make it easy for them to get started with the game. Our guest is Janet Miller, President of the Louisville Chapter of the LPGA Amateur group, formerly know as the EWGA. Jante’s local Louisville group has an open house here in Louisville on Sunday March 19th and everyone in the area is invited to attend to check out the group. Jeff talks about how easy it is for women to get started by attending a group golf clinic designed to introduce women to the game. We also discuss how golf seems to make it hard for women to get into the game; talking about how intimidating a golf course can be to not only women, but to all beginners in golf. Another great episode this week from Those Weekend Golf Guys, the 2nd best golf show in the world.

    Swing Faster, Faster

    Swing Faster, Faster

This week on Those Weekend Golf Guys you will hear three great ways to increase your swing speed. And we all know that sing speed is the best way to assure longer drives and better ball flight. Jeff Smith, one of Golf Magazine’s Top100 Teachers, runs down his 3 techniques to speed up your swing speed. The first way is to make sure your grip is not too tight on the club. He says the grip should be “soft” but not “loose”. Because when your grip Is too tight your rms and wrists do not function correctly and slow down your swing. The second technique to speed up your swing is to learn how to properly use your legs to “push off” the ground. Jeff describes in detail some routines to practice doing that push off sufficiently. And the third technique involves your core muscles. As Tiger Woods said about his game recently, “I can’t push off with my legs like I used to so I have to rely on my core, and my core is stronger than ever.” Jeff Smith has some pretty cool and inexpensive ways to improve core strength in a short amount of time. So, after this week’s episode, your swing will be faster so your shots will be longer! All thanks to the Second Best Golf Show In The World, Those Weekend Golf Guys

How To Play A Hard Golf Course

How To Play A Hard Golf Course

So, how hard is Golf? Well, how hard do you want it to be? How hard to you want to make it? That’s what we talk about this week on Those Weekend Golf Guys. First we run down the list of the 30 hardest golf courses. Many of them Jeff Smith has played and talks about his adventures. Number 5 on the list is the Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort, a course both Jeff and John are very familiar with. And then the Guys discuss the techniques you can use to tame any tough golf course. The game is only as hard as you make it and Jeff points out that if you hit the ball straight and put it in the fairway, the game gets pretty easy. So Jeff will coach you throughout the episode on how to hit the ball straight even on one of the 30 hardest golf courses.

John Ashton: Does God Need My Money?

John Ashton: Does God Need My Money?
When we talk about giving, finances, tithes and stewardship in our churches there are a lot of things that could be said. This week, one of our church Elders, John Ashton, said some great things about this subject! Does God 'need' me to give Him money or does He enjoy working with me when I give to Him like a father does with his son? John gives us some great things to consider in the area of giving our resources back to God. Enjoy!
