Cold Cases and Serial Killers (Part One)

In April 2018, the Golden State Killer, Joseph DeAngelo was arrested. NIJ support helped lead to his arrest, and in the aftermath of the arrest, NIJ Social Science Analyst Eric Martin was among those tasked with finding other cases NIJ helped law enforcement solve. Eric joins the show to talk about some of those cases, and answer some broader questions about serial killers: What is a serial killer? Are they on the rise? How do we know how many serial killers are currently active?

Mark Greene, the Director of the Office of Technology and Standards at NIJ, and Lucas Zarwell, the Director of NIJ’s Office of Investigative and Forensic Sciences, co-host this conversation about serial killers. Read the transcript.

Several cold cases throughout the United States have recently been solved using new DNA technology and genealogy investigations, including the infamous Golden State Killer who was arrested in 2018. The San Diego District Attorney's Office has also solved several cold cases using genealogy, such as the Potter murder and the Martinez murder. Deputy District Attorney Brian Erickson of the Cold Case Homicide Unit joins the podcast to discuss how law enforcement solves cold cases using this new investigation method.

Each episode we examine the laws on the books; 3 are real and 1 is fake. Can you guess which law is the fake?

    2. CA Penal Code §2: This Code takes effect at twelve o’clock, noon, on the first day of January, eighteen hundred and seventy-three.
    3. CA Penal Code §3: No part of it is retroactive, unless so declared.
