The Best Players to Come Out of the Negro Leagues

The Best Players to Come Out of the Negro Leagues

In this week's episode of "Painting the Corners with Anton Schindler" we go over a handful of the 37 Hall of Famers that came from the Negro Leagues and talk about what made these players so important to the history of the league and the history of baseball. We'll talk about one of the most popular pitchers that ever came out of the Negro leagues and a prolific hitter by the name of Josh Gibson who threatened Barry Bond's Home Run Record.

We became aware of a very cool data visualization comparing Negro League play to MLB play of the same era 1920-1948.  Adam Korengold has been doing data visualization professionally for almost 25 years–he’s now an Analytics Lead at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland–and teaches in the graduate data analytics and visualization program at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

Lucky for us he’s been a baseball fan for most of his life, and since 2020 has been a member of SABR, the Society for American Baseball Research.  He has expanded his love for the game to include making visualizations on the game, as well as paintings on vintage baseball cards.

Adam posted this link: https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/adam.s.korengold/viz/AllMajorLeaguesOffenseandDefense1920-1948/NegroLeaguesasMajorLeaguesTheyPlayedAtTheSameLevel#guest=n&1 on his Tableau and we highly recommend you visit the link to view the graph for yourself.

We discussed the systemic racism that forged the Negro Leagues in the first place and how the players in the Negro Leagues truly compared to their white (or mostly white) counterparts in the Major Leagues.

    Spicer Speaking Episode 11 - December 23, 2020

For the final episode of (zany) 2020, Judd enjoy visits with a pair of great guests: Listen to a conversation with Larry Lester, author/historian/researcher and co-founder of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum; and tune in for a chat with Derek White, general manager of Desert Willow Golf Resort, which readies for the desert's golf peak-season.

Also, a sweet stocking stuffer accompanies the program, with the prize of a free 4-some to Desert Willow for one lucky listener.

Thanks for all the support in 2020!

Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, describes the history of the Negro Leagues and their importance to America’s history. The discussion includes the role baseball, the Negro Leagues, and the integration of the game had in the Civil Rights Movement. The importance of black baseball as a business and economic driver for many communities is also a part of this discussion. Kendrick also explains why preserving the museum, the history, and the stories are important. Image courtesy of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City, MO
