#108 - John Falkiner | Telemark Legend & IFMGA Guide
John Falkiner is originally from Australia where grew up on a large sheep farm. His father, who learned to ski in Europe before World War 2, introduced him to skiing at 5 years old at Mount Buller in Victoria, Australia.
As a young man he bought a one-way ticket to Europe in 1973 and started working in Verbier, Switzerland. In 1975 he ended up getting a gig helping haul film gear around for famed ski move maker Dick Barrymore which introduced to the Hot Doggin’ scene.
He’s competed at a high level of Alpine skiing. On top of that he’s appeared in over 80 film productions as a professional skier including several James Bond films. He’s also a IFMGA certified Mountain Guide.
And in 1978 he was introduced to Telemark skiing by way of the legendary Karhu team who was visiting the area.
#84 - Tom Carter
Tom Carter is another one of the great people I’ve met over the years that has influenced Telemark skiing for the better. In the 1970s he moved to the Yosemite Valley and lived and climbed there as part of a new generation of climbers. It was there that he was first introduced to backcountry touring and using early Telemark gear to navigate through the valley and surrounding areas to find untouched powder and use skis for travel.
His love for backcountry skiing and traveling in the mountains by way of his Freeheel gear led him and his partner Alan Bard to do big tours in the Eastern Sierra including setting up one of the well-known routes called the red line traverse.
He was also a guide for nearly 30 years in the Ruby Mountains of Nevada. He currently lives in Lake Tahoe where he loves to get out on his 3-pin gear and move quickly and efficiently through the mountains.
I first interviewed Tom in 2010 as part of my third feature Telemark film called Hippies Punx & Misfits. He’s a wealth of knowledge and I love talking to him about his passion for the mountains and his love of Telemark.

Jakso 1: HJK:n euromenestys – "Suomen oma Rosenborg"?
Aamun vieraana Laila Karhu 2012-06-18 kl. 06.00
Johanna Dickson haastatteli.
