More than anything else, the end matters to the novel reader. Novelists, including Austen and Dickens, sometimes changed their minds about their endings, using these changes of mind to explore how an ending satisfies, or fails to satisfy, our expectations.

The lecture will explore the rise of the indeterminate ending, from Henry James on. And it will suggest how an ending can, for worse as well as for better, retrospectively change our experience of a novel.

Combien connaissez vous de façons d’aimer quelqu’un ? Kazu aime Lou. Et il connaît mille et une manières de le lui montrer. Il lui écrit des poèmes. Il danse avec elle. Il la fait rire. Il prend soin d’elle quand ça ne va pas. Et, surtout, il lui raconte des histoires… qui, pourtant, ne sont pas vraiment des histoires. Ni des poèmes, d’ailleurs, ou des haïkus. Ni même des blagues ou de petits contes. Ce sont des « kazus ». Ils subliment le quotidien, caressent nos faiblesses, dédramatisent nos folies, apprivoisent notre mélancolie et chantent l’amour. Car, oui, Kazu aime Lou éperdument, mais Lou n’est plus là…
