Paying the Peter Thiel Price (Dylan Beynon / Mindbloom - Ep 33)

Just like with any skill, there are beginners, and there are experts. Through practice and experience, the experts become exceptional at what they do.

In fundraising, there are also experts. You could call them the "seasoned vets" of venture capital. These are the founders that have raised all the way from small angel rounds to Series B and beyond. It's safe to say that any founder who's raised over 4 rounds of venture capital knows a thing or two about fundraising.

Today, I get to share my conversation with one of those fundraising experts.

Dylan Beynon is a 3x Founder who has raised hundreds of millions of capital throughout his career. His most recent venture is Mindbloom, a company that provides at-home psychedelic care that transforms mental health which he has raised over $50M across 3 rounds for.

Dylan's success with Mindbloom is amazing, but his why is even better. Get your tissues, this one might pull on your heart strings...

116 Rob Kalwarowsky: When A Toxic Workplace Culture Leads To Severe Depression, An Inspiring Story Of Recovery And Empowerment

116 Rob Kalwarowsky: When A Toxic Workplace Culture Leads To Severe Depression, An Inspiring Story Of Recovery And Empowerment

Sometimes I have conversations with people on this platform who can speak to subjects that others might be thinking about but have never expressed openly. I met today’s guest recently and it is my huge privilege to bring his story to the podcast.

Rob Kalwarowsky is an impactful leader whose quiet realisations give his community loud transformations.  Through his work and his podcast The Leadership Launchpad Project, Rob shares wise insights about toxic leadership, mental health and finding purpose in life. He gives people an intimate and caring space regardless of the size of the room, while bringing humour and research into his coaching.

Before transitioning into leadership coaching and speaking, Rob spent over 10 years at the opposite end of the sensitivity spectrum, honing his skills as an engineer within mining, oil pipelines, and consulting in heavy industry. Rob has a foundation of high-performance as he graduated from MIT with a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Management. He was also a 3-time Academic All-American in NCAA Water Polo and played on the under 18 Canadian National Water Polo team.

But the fast track to success is rarely a straight road and Rob suffered significant mental health challenges. His journey of recovery led him to leadership coaching, podcasting, the TEDx stage and a complete life transformation. I’m deeply grateful to Rob for coming on today to talk about his experiences, and of course I’m curious to learn about the Unlock Moments of remarkable clarity that helped him find the path ahead.

Content note: this episode discusses in part the experiences of a person in North America treated for depression and acute suicidality with ketamine. In the UK, where this podcast is recorded, NICE does not currently reference ketamine in its guidelines for the treatment of depression, although there is an ongoing debate based on emerging evidence. The Unlock Moment does not take a view on the effectiveness of a particular medical intervention and I would always advise listeners to seek the advice of a qualified medical professional.

The Future of Telemedicine in Mental Health Care | Dr. Jonathan Beatty

In this episode of The Behavioral Corner, host Steve Martorano and addiction psychiatrist Dr. Jonathan Beatty discuss the future of virtual healthcare and telemedicine, particularly in treating psychiatric disorders like depression. The conversation delves into the benefits and potential risks of telemedicine for prescribing controlled substances, highlighting the importance of maintaining patient confidentiality and acknowledging the limitations of remote treatment. Dr. Beatty also shares his experience with ketamine and S-ketamine for treating depression in-office and the strict DEA requirements surrounding their use. Additionally, the discussion addresses concerns over the rise of online medical practices driven by venture capital money and the potential dangers of forming a "pill mill." Overall, the episode emphasizes the need for patients to be cautious when seeking help online and to look for sincere practices that take steps to safeguard their patients.

    #95: Ketamine

    #95: Ketamine

Ketamine, also known as Special K, is a drug that has only been on Earth for slightly longer than I have, and in that time we've seen an incredible cultural shift in how it's viewed. Where Special K was once a dangerous street drug kids were using to get high, now Ketamine treatment is the frontier of antidepression therapy, the first of what will probably be many glutamate inhibiting drugs.

This week I talk about Ketamine, what it is, how it works, where it comes from, and why it appears to outperform every antidepressant ever synthesized in rapidly reducing the symptoms. I also discuss the claims that ketamine reverses opioid tolerance overnight, the way it reduces anxiety and PTSD, and why it has seen a massive destigmatization in recent years.

For the quote I mentioned, see "Ketamine and Calcium Signaling: A Crosstalk for Neuronal Physiology and Pathology." To read more about Ketamine therapy, check out "Ketamine," in The British Journal of Anaesthesia. To read about how Ketamine might reduce cravings or even reduce opioid tolerance, check out this article in Frontiers in Psychology,  "Efficacy of Ketamine in the Treatment of Substance Use Disorder: A Systematic Review."

What is Ketamine and how can it treat depression? - with Dr. Steven Mandel and Sam Mandel from Ketamine Clinics Los Angeles

What is Ketamine and how can it treat depression? - with Dr. Steven Mandel and Sam Mandel from Ketamine Clinics Los Angeles

We've talked about therapy, we've talked about antidepressants... but today we’re talking about a totally different type of treatment for depression: Ketamine.

When I say that, you might think, WOAH, that’s an anesthetic. Or, that’s a party drug. But here's how it relates to mental health - there are now places you can go, doctors you can go to, to get a Ketamine infusion for your depression.

And this is fascinaing to me. Because I am all for anything that can be proven to help people’s brains. Ketamine - because of its use as an anesthetic, is legal for medicinal use. And has been since the 1960s.

My guests today are Dr. Steven Mandel and Sam Mandel, the founders of Ketamine Clinics Los Angeles!

Dr. Mandel has been using Ketamine to treat patients for over 40 years, as a board-certified anesthesiologist. He’s also a founder of the American Society of Ketamine Physicians, Psychotherapists, and Practitioners. Sam Mandel is his son, and the Chief Operating Officer of Ketamine Clinics Los Angeles. They opened the clinic together 7 years, ago, and since then, have administered over 8 thousand treatments.

I loved talking to them about what Ketamine infusions entail, how it actually works on the brain, and how it has helped many of their patients feel SO much better.
