Episode 178: 'Rubikon' (2022)/'Let the Corpses Tan' (2017)

Episode 178: 'Rubikon' (2022)/'Let the Corpses Tan' (2017)

This week we decided to go with a straightforward episode. We have a little bit of movie news and we talk about two movies. And we finally make a decision about our long running giveaway. In just two weeks, we will announce the winner of original horror art, a t-shirt from Public House 28 Brewery, and a number of horror movies.

We know we just spoke about Tom Cruise a few weeks back and yes, that conversation went on for longer than it needed to. But how could we ignore that Top Gun: Maverick just made over $1 billion? We also talk about the star quality of Cruise and how there is no modern comparison.

We love madcap whounits. We  drove a quote from Knives Out into the ground and dreamed of making a stage production of 1985's Clue. Recent years have seen a return of these types of movies and we talk about the trailer from the latest. See How They Run has a cast that includes Saoirse Ronan, Adrian Brody, and Sam Rockwell in a murder mystery set around a  West End play.

Rubikon starts off like many other science fiction movies. It is set in the future, pollution has covered the globe, and corporation run everything. It also looks great. Few indie sci-fi movies look near as good as it. What drives the film are its characters and the story. We talk about a pretty straightforward film that still manages to be confusing.

Early on, it seems like Let the Corpses Tan is content to concentrate on an amazing title and its stylish look. Part Weird West, part heist movie, part WTF, the film will not be for everyone. It is easily one of the most memorable things we have seen this year, and not always for the best reason. We the meaning of nude women covered in gold, a day long violent shootout, and how to make people care for characters that are only given a little bit of time.

It’s week two of the Max Fun Drive! Thank you so much if you’ve already supported the show  by becoming a MaxFun member. Make sure you  let us know on twitter or instagram so we can properly thank you! For week two we caught up with Riki Lindhome (Knives Out, Another Period) and Monica Padrick (Community, Central Park) about their pilot Tails. They were so great to talk to. Monica told us about her transition from being a journalist to a TV writer and how a dinner with a family friend changed her career. Riki gave us the origin story of Garfunkel & Oates, why she started writing sitcoms, and the many brutal experiences she’s had as a songwriter for hire.  Thanks for listening! Enjoy it!

In our crossover, Ben, Andrew, Allie and Julia take a deep dive into the Simpsons pilot, they discuss the Simpson’s spec script that started Andrew’s career, inside scoop from the Friends writers room, and a general 90s nostalgia trip.

Our second crossover episode is with John Moe and his MaxFun podcast Depresh Mode. John and Ben talk to writers Steven Canals (Pose), Paul R. Puri (Chicago Med), and Rachel Bloom (Crazy Ex-Girflriend) about mental health among writers and writing about mental health on TV. It’s an enlightening conversation about process for our process nerds!
