Carla and Brad Make a Playlist

Carla and Brad Make a Playlist

We interrupt this podcast's regularly scheduled programming for a SPECIAL REPORT:

    We've made a Krautrock Playlist.

The original idea was to have a "song draft": having dug deep enough into Krautrock, we would take turns claiming songs for ourselves.  We figured this way we'd learn what each of us likes in particular, and what we like best.

What happened is we came up with a list of 44 songs -- FORTY-FOUR -- that generally holds together not just as a cohesive cross-section of the genre (with apologies to Popol Vuh), but also as one hell of a mix to queue up on Spotify.

Did we hit all the good stuff?  Hell, no, and we know we have much more to learn and explore.  But we made a good start.

Some stats, for those who are interested:

Song counts by artist: Can (7!), Kraftwerk (5), Neu! (5), Faust (4), Harmonia (4), La Düsseldorf (4), Amon Düül II (2), Cluster (2), Guru Guru (2), Moebius + Plank (2), Agitation Free (1), Amon Düül (1), Ash Ra Tempel (1), Brainticket (1), Holger Czukay (1), Tangerine Dream (1), Xhol Caravan (1).

Song counts by credited musicians: Klaus Dinger (11), Holger Czukay (10), Michael Rother (10), Dieter Moebius (8), Hans-Joachim Roedelius (6).

S6E258 - Agitation Free 'Malesch' with David Lewis

Record store owner and self-professed 'music geek' David Lewis (Elizabeth's Records - Columbus, OH) thinks we should never stop discovering new (to us) music. He's right. Around 10 years ago he came upon the 1972 debut album by German experimental rock group Agitation Free, 'Malesch'. A mysterious fusion of psychedelia, experimental krautrock and world music, it's a fascinating snapshot of a band working together to create a trippy, ethereal and unique wall of sound.

Songs featured in this episode: Laila III - Agitation Free (Live in Paris ORTF Studio, 1973); Future Games - Fleetwood Mac; Hallogallo - Neu!; Phaedra - Tangerine Dream; Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - Black Sabbath; Winning - The Sound; You Play For Us Today, Sahara City - Agitation Free; New Dawn Fades - New Order; Ala Tul - Agitation Free; Supernaut - Black Sabbath; Outside Tokyo - The Stranglers; Pulse - Agitation Free; Departure From The Northern Wasteland - Michael Hoenig; Pruit Igoe - Philip Glass; Khan El Khalili - Agitation Free; Jessica - The Allman Brothers; No One Is There - Nico; V-2 Schneider - David Bowie; Malesch - Agitation Free; Utopia III (excerpt) - Thomas Kessler; Malesch, Rücksturz - Agitation Free; Emka - My Education; Music Factory - Agitation Free (Live Mainz Germany, 1972)

    Episode-09- Birth Control

    Episode-09- Birth Control
Birth Control is one of the longest-running German rock bands of all time.

50 years ago, they released the album Hoodoo Man which included the international mega-hit "Gamma Ray" that turned the band into household names throughout Europe.
While the personnel of the band has changed over it's 54-year history, one thing has not: solid musical performances in the studio and even more so on stage, where the band has delivered legendary performances for decades.

Just recently, the band released their 21st studio album "Open Up" with 8 brand new tracks that overflow with creativity, musicality, dynamics and of course, the pure dose of rock'n'roll the band is known for. And for the very first time, the band offers a new version of "Gamma Ray" 50 years after the original release.

I am joined by Peter Foeller and Ludi Ettrich and we talk about some of the history, their die-hard fans and the new album.
