Den nigerianske musikern och människorättsaktivisten Fela Anikulapo-Kuti är mest känd som grundaren av afrobeat. Hans musik är en mix av nigerianska Yoruba-rytmer, highlife från Ghana och jazz och funk.
Under sin karriär blev han trakasserad, misshandlad och fängslad på grund av sina provokativa texter som kritiserade Nigerias korrupta militärdiktatur.
När Fela Kuti gick bort i sviterna av aids 1997 hade han hunnit spela in över 70 album, bevittna ett inbördeskrig och utropa en egen republik. Och gifta sig. Med 27 kvinnor. Samtidigt.

Last month, on August 2nd, I woke up and realized it has been exactly 22 years, since the world lost one of its iconic presidents, one with a sincere commitment to Africa’s underdogs. On that morning, while waiting for Phuket to wake up, and the lazy sun to shine, I started daydreaming… what does the world still remembers of him? What do the millions of African children, born after his death in 1997, know about his gift to the world? his legendary music? What would he tell them, if he was to address his people, just like any other president?
