The Provocative Business of Being a Kardashian

The Provocative Business of Being a Kardashian

We’re tackling one of our most requested topics today, a deep-dive on the First Family of Reality TV and their ascent into major A List status, the Kardashians!
Joining the episode is Stacy Lee Kong, Founding Editor of whip smart pop culture site, Friday Things.
We break down the Kardashians place in pop culture history and what makes them so compelling. Whether you love them, hate them, or claim not to care, there’s no denying the impact they’ve had on culture.
From their business savvy and multiple million (and billion!) dollar companies, to how they've parlayed 15 minutes into 15 years and counting, their cultural currency has never been more relevant. While to some they embody the classic American success story, we break down how they've profited and benefitted from leveraging the aesthetic influence of the Black community, and how that's recently been shifting. Kim cosplaying Marilyn has more to do with perceptions of class than it does fitting into that dress!
Shedding the dead weight of 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' has officially ushered them into their latest era on Disney Plus with 'The Kardashians.' With a much sleeker look and big Disney dollars behind it,  their latest endeavour feels....rich. If their insecurity has always been being viewed as just reality stars, why not reframe the way we consider reality tv? We know nothing this family does is by accident; they are masters of their own narratives, with Mama Kris as the ultimate Momager. So... what does this big budget, cinematic production tell us about the new ways the Kardashians want to be perceived, and what does the future hold?

We also post cool articles, tv/film recommendations, and generally love to break down notable cultural moments.

The Video That Could Topple Kylie Jenner’s Empire

The Video That Could Topple Kylie Jenner’s Empire

    On the show today…

In huge news for Britney Spears, her father Jamie Spears has finally been suspended as her conservator after more than a decade in the role. The judge ordered Jamie to turn over all financial books and documents related to his daughter and although this is a positive step forward, the story is not over yet.

And Network Ten has released the first official trailer of Brooke Blurton as the next Bachelorette and it’s unlike any other promo we’ve seen before. It also signalled the first big divide between how audiences view The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. For the first time ever, The Bachelorette feels like the main event.

Plus, the world’s (alleged) youngest billionaire Kylie Jenner has expanded her empire with the launch of Kylie Swim. Although there was initially some confusion around why she would release a swimwear line at the end of the American summer, Kylie’s influence ensured the new line went gangbusters with sales. However, customers are now sharing videos of their purchases and it’s highlighted a pretty alarming problem.

Catching up, Netflix Reality shows, Simone Biles, Housewives, and Magnetic Vaccines

Catching up, Netflix Reality shows, Simone Biles, Housewives, and Magnetic Vaccines

WOW what a week it has been, it has flown by and Bree and Liz talk about how they haven't even had the time to catch up with each other. Time really does go faster the older you get.
We start the episode right off with the Love is Blind: After the Alter special. Liz got kind of bored with it, but Bree convinces her to finish. Even through it all, our opinions about Lauren and Cameron have stayed the same. We are still obsessed with them. Barnett and Amber... not so much. And our views of Jessica have defiantly shifted. Then we talk about how Neflix has really stepped up the realty show game, and we are here for it! Love is Blind, Selling Sunset, Too Hot to Handle... all amazing!
This brought us into talking about re-boots and how we are loving some (like Sex in the City and Friends) and some are better left where they ended (like Jersey Shore). Some of these story lines were just completed when the show ended the first time. How to these networks have nothing else to produce, we need more new things!
Of course we had to talk about the recent news in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics with Simone Biles stepping down from competing because of her mental health. We could not be more encouraged by this and inspired that other younger girls will see her strength and hopefully not have to struggle.
The housewives this week lacked a little for us, while we thought the new episodes of RHONY and RHOP were good we weren't dying for them. Liz understands the controversy of all the racial conversations on RHONY a little more, but lets be honest its a conversation that's needed to happen for a long time and people just don't want to hear it. And on RHOP, Juan set us off. Don't be so mean to Robyn, she is doing her best in this pandemic. Give her a little break.
We end the episode with the Kylie Cosmetics drama, emotional vs physical cheating, and this new rumor that the Johnson&Johnson vaccine makes you magnetic?!?! Things are getting more strange by the day.

The Business Decision That Could Cost Kim Kardashian Her Empire

The Business Decision That Could Cost Kim Kardashian Her Empire

    On the show today…

During a recent episode of Welcome To The OC, Bitches! podcast, Rachel Bilson shared how a particular scene from season one led to some tension between her and co-star Samaire Armstrong, all linked to her real-life relationship with Adam Brody. Yes, this drama is 20 years old, but that doesn’t mean we’re not going to analyse it.

And Kim Kardashian has announced that she is shutting down her KKW Beauty site so that it can come back “under a completely new brand with new formulas that are more modern and innovative”. However, there’s a lot happening behind the scenes that, after a little investigation, proves that there’s much more to this decision than meets the eye.

Plus, it’s Weekend Watch time! In celebration of NAIDOC Week, we recommend a documentary and a TV drama series that highlight and celebrate Indigenous storytelling.
