Book of Joe: Postseason pitching, Astros dominating, Disciplining Players, Padres Comeback, and first car memories

Book of Joe: Postseason pitching, Astros dominating, Disciplining Players, Padres Comeback, and first car memories

The Book of Joe Podcast begins with the power of postseason pitching. Hosts Tom Verducci and World Series Champion Joe Maddon discuss batters hitting just .211 at the plate.  The Astros right handed pitching staff controlled the Yankees lineup and the breaking ball has been the star. Joe doesn't want to hear any revisionist history talk about the Astros roof being open or not, both teams are playing on the same field and this series is far from over. We explore how players are disciplined in the postseason and Joe recalls his experiences as manager.  Plus, which manager eats a root beer barrel before the start of every 9th inning? The Padres are back in their series with the Phillies and Joe loved the matchup between the Nola brothers. We wrap up with first car memories and how that car is always cool and you'll never forget what you paid for it.

Book of Joe: Padres win, Darvish velocity change, Ray relieving, Strategic managing, and a Dick Ellsworth memory

The Book of Joe Podcast begins with the Padres 5-3 win over the Dodgers. Hosts Tom Verducci and World Series Champion Joe Maddon were both impressed with the managing job of Bob Melvin. The ability of Yu Darvish to change velocity is amazing and Joe thinks the gameplan included not throwing the same pitch twice during an at-bat.  Over to the Astros win, Joe explores Seattle bringing starter Robbie Ray to the mound as a reliever. Tom asks Joe about walking a batter with the bases loaded and the strategy that goes into facing a player like Aaron Judge.  With the passing of former MLB pitcher Dick Ellsworth, Tom offers up an amazing memory of just how many innings he pitched. How does the Cleveland fishing scandal relate to athletes always looking for an edge? Plus, we wrap up with Tom revisiting his Jefferson Starship collection and asking Joe for some classic rock recommendations.

Book of Joe: MLB Playoffs are underway, Showalter substance check, Recipe for Winning Rosters, and Station Wagons

The Book of Joe Podcast begins with the opening weekend of the MLB Playoffs.  Hosts Tom Verducci and World Series Champion Joe Maddon dive into Mets' manager Buck Showalter asking for a substance check on Padres pitcher Joe Musgrove.  Tom explores the change in pitching strategy in the playoffs where 1 out of every 3 balls is a breaking pitch and how managers are handling their top arms. There was ONE at bat this weekend that really impressed Joe and could've changed an entire series.  We put the 'rest vs rust' debate to bed as the Divisional series are about to get underway.  Joe explains how he prepared his lineups and tried to take advantage of using his best arms as often as possible.  Plus, Tom tells us the most underrated car and how today's generation is being robbed of enjoying it.
