Amplifying Student Voices Through Poetry: A Conversation with Peter Kahn

Amplifying Student Voices Through Poetry: A Conversation with Peter Kahn

In this thought-provoking episode of The Teacher’s Forum, David sits down with retired English teacher, Peter Kahn, whose lifelong passion for education has transformed the lives of countless students. Peter takes us on a captivating journey through his educational background and his impactful work at Oak Park River Forest High School (OPRF) in Oak Park, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago

At OPRF, Peter initiated the school's award-winning spoken word club, setting the stage for a remarkable exploration of self-expression through poetry. He shares the inspiration behind the club's inception and the remarkable journey it took over the years. Peter also delves into the Oak Park Model, a groundbreaking educational approach that he created that utilizes poetry as a powerful tool to amplify the voices of students, particularly those whose stories often go unheard. Peter provides insights into the unique ways in which poetry played a pivotal role in hundreds of student’s lives at OPRF, including David’s own son Christian Harris, and former NBA player Iman Shumpert.

Peter also shares his experiences working with students in London which led him to become a founding member of the London Teenage Poetry Slam, and his post-retirement work in Columbus, Ohio, where he continues to make a difference in the lives of students through poetry.

The episode also explores the concept of "disrupting" the traditional high school English canon. Peter is a proponent of including contemporary poets like Terrance Hayes to provide students with a fresh, relatable perspective on literature and language. Join us as we discover the transformative power of poetry and education

    0012 Grammar D*cks

SUMMARY:  Can Dee make a full recovery from being a grammar dick? Will Lauren's butt get sorted?

Grammar policing becomes problematic when we use it as a way of judging someone’s intelligence and/or value and to uphold systems of oppression, socioeconomic prejudice, or other means of discrimination.

Have you ever wondered about the island of Fiji or the Republic of Bulgaria, or any other far-off destination and its culture?  Learning about other places and people-- what makes us the same and what makes us different--that's the goal of an international studies project that has the students of Eastern Heights Middle School so engaged. The students selected a place from somewhere on the globe that they wanted to study and created projects to show of what they learned. The project will culminate at a spectacular International Festival at Eastern Heights Middle School on May 10, 2023, with live music, traditional foods of other countries and a walking tour of the finished work of the students. Community partners will be there, as well, with information for parents and many resources, including free clothing. Teaching Writing with Andrew Pudewa

    Teaching Writing with Andrew Pudewa

I love writing. And I love teaching writing. Sometimes. Some students love to learn writing, and some of them really don't. It's hard to teach the ones that don't.

Andrew Pudewa understands and helps. Andrew is the founder and director of the Institute for Excellence in Writing and a father of seven. Traveling and speaking around the world, he addresses issues related to teaching, writing, thinking, spelling, and music with clarity, insight, practical experience, and humor. His seminars for parents, students, and teachers have helped transform many a reluctant writer and have equipped educators with powerful tools to dramatically improve students’ skills.

This episode is fun not only because we both get to talk about a subject we love, but also because we get to talk about helping students and parents love writing, too. I hope you are inspired by the conversation.

    Andrew and I talk about:

    • another thing we both love and the surprising ways it helps writing
    • how to keep from ruining your child's enthusiasm
    • when you should teach writing (not what you think!)
    • how to know if your student's writing is good
    • how to help your student write better
    • and more!

    Writing Essays with Kim Kautzer

    Writing Essays with Kim Kautzer

Once students start writing essays, they are writing them everywhere -- nearly every subject for years of their education. But how do we get them started right? How do we teach good essay form? How do we grade it?

Kim Kautzer, founder and creative director at WriteShop, is a veteran homeschooler, author, and conference speaker who loves to help parents feel more confident about teaching their struggling writers. The Kautzers make their home in Southern California where they homeschooled for 15 years. Kim's favorites include tea, travel, reading, gardening---and her nine grandkids!

Kim and I both love writing, obviously, so we enjoyed talking about it all:

    • how writing is like swimming and other life skills
    • steps for the writing process
    • ways to simplify writing for students who get overwhelmed
    • how to grow writing maturity
    • the most important writing tip to teach your student
    • and more!

Ep. 11 Stages of Writing with Julie Bogart

Ep. 11 Stages of Writing with Julie Bogart

So many parents are confused about teaching writing. Is my child doing a good job? Is he just copying what he's seen me or other authors write? Is he getting any better? Today we find out.

Julie Bogart is the author of the book The Brave Learner and the founder and creator of the popular Brave Writer program. She homeschooled her five children who are now adults. She coaches home educators and parents in the Brave Learner Home community.

Julie talks about how our child learns writing naturally:

    • how learning to write is like learning to speak
    • whether we should worry about our child to "copy"
    • how to move from speaking to writing
    • what are the developmental stages in writing
    • dangers of the grading rubric
    • how to teach strong research skills
    • and more!

Ep. 9 Charlotte Mason Language Arts with Kristen Pratt

Ep. 9 Charlotte Mason Language Arts with Kristen Pratt

Kristen Pratt is the author of the Language Lessons for a Living Education series. She is also the brand and curriculum manager for Master Books. Prior to working for Master Books, Kristen owned and operated her own curriculum supply company where she helped homeschool moms pick the right curriculum for their families. This experience has proven invaluable as she helps thousands of families navigate curriculum choices offered by Master Books.

What was really interesting was our discussion about a modern Charlotte Mason education, how Mason might have taught if she lived right now.

Homeschool Language Arts: Where To Start?

Homeschool Language Arts: Where To Start?

If you are new to the idea of home education, you may be one of those moms looking to know how to homeschool.  It is not school at home.  Homeschooling is a lifestyle focused on educating each individual child so that they grow into a thriving adult.

So if you are overwhelmed and searching for answers as to how to homeschool, give yourself lots of grace.  Learning anything is a process and does not happen overnight.

With everything in life, internal motivation is the game changer that propels us forward in any endeavor.  We want our resistant readers to learn to enjoy the experience without stressing about making mistakes.

Conversations and dialogue between a trusted adult and a child is not only life-giving but also build up language and reading comprehension skills.

Bottom line, when you read aloud to your child of any age, you remove barriers to reading, increase foundational language skills and deepen relationships.

    Win!  Win!

Harnessing "Kid Energy" To Create Curriculum Students Connect With, with 2086xxoo, Founder and Creative Director of Liberation Education

How do you thrive as a true creative, in a system built for process? If you're 2086xxoo (or 20 for short), you dive in with both feet and "problem-solve your way through" - and create curricular innovation along the way. This week I'm honored to talk with the most innovative educator I have ever seen in action. 20 is the kind of teacher they make movies about, the kind of educator whose ability to connect with students and call up the best in them seems almost magical. Throughout a career that has spanned every grade level, school type, and demographic environment, 20 has consistently fed the fire of creative work, recently launching the language arts platform for teachers and students, Liberation Education. Think of Liberation Ed like an educational Netflix, with a library of original language arts hip hop songs and videos, created in collaboration with students, with full curriculum currently in the works. On this episode, 20 and I talk about harnessing the magic of "kid energy" to create curriculum that students WANT to connect with, and how to thrive as a true creative in an education system stacked against mold-breakers.

Interview with Language Creator David Peterson (Game of Thrones, Dune, The 100, Doctor Strange)

Interview with Language Creator David Peterson (Game of Thrones, Dune, The 100, Doctor Strange)
"Polyglots and language creators...that Venn diagram is almost a circle." In this episode, language creator David Peterson sat down with me to talk about language creation, language ownership, and the joy of it all. No other interview has had such an impact on me, the level of mastery in language creation was completely unclear to me. Every single choice that you're making is an active choice. Nothing in a language has to be that way. Here are just a few of the questions we discussed on this show. If a language is created, why is its grammar not easy? How do Hollywood actors react when they have to deliver dialogue in an invented language? How many languages do you need to speak in order to create a language? (spoiler: I have too many!) After creating a language, do you want the world to learn this new language? And David also explained the phases language creators go through. You create the language...at least you think that's what you're doing You realise you actually had lots of choices and you start making copy-languages You realise you don't need to create your language like another one, you start making the language you actually want If you're fascinated by language invention and created languages after listening to this interview, I recommend David's own book "The Art of Language Invention". (see links below) Thank you to David Peterson (https://www.fluent.show/guests/david) for this episode introduction. Special Guest: David Peterson.
