    10. 3 Steps to Stop Self Criticism

    10. 3 Steps to Stop Self Criticism

Self-criticism is a harsh evaluation of ourselves and it lacks compassion, balance, and truth. Although we may believe that this inner voice will motivate us to improve, it often does just the opposite! Nothing drains our energy and optimism like self criticism.

Those who have lived with unsupported ADHD for many years are particularly at risk for developing self-critical thought habits. Today we'll take a look at why this is and 3 steps we can take to change the way we think about ourselves!

    9. ADHD is Poorly Named: The Truth About Attention Regulation and Hyperfocus

    9. ADHD is Poorly Named: The Truth About Attention Regulation and Hyperfocus

ADHD has long been explained as a deficit of attention, but many think that this is a faulty description.

It's not that people with ADHD can't focus, it's that we can't always control what  we focus on or when/ how long  we focus (this is attention regulation).

In fact, those of us with ADHD may even find that we have exceptional focus on certain tasks or interests and even have a hard time shifting our attention off of those tasks.

Today we'll take a look at attention regulation, a phenomenon called hyperfocus, and how our variable attention can impact our lives.

    7. Impulsivity and ADHD: The Good, Bad, & Ugly

    7. Impulsivity and ADHD: The Good, Bad, & Ugly

Many with ADHD are quick responders which means they can be rock stars in emergencies, the first to crack a timely joke, or the ones willing to take a financial risk that pays off.

But the other side of our fast-acting ADHD brains is that impulsivity can cause problems for us. Even if our impulsivity isn't visible to those around us, it can still impact how we show up in our lives.

Personally, I consider my visual distractibility  to be just as much of an impulse issue as an attention issue, and I'll cover that in this episode.

Today we'll take a look at impulsivity and discover some ways we can help our fast-responding brains by creating more "pause".

We may have the reputation for having boundless energy, but most of the people I know with ADHD are really tired.

The Voice of Dyslexia: Meet Gabriela Alvares

The Voice of Dyslexia: Meet Gabriela Alvares

Gabriela Alvares is a student majoring in Communications Media studies and minoring in Public Relations at Quinnipiac University, in Connecticut. She was born in South Africa to parents from Portugal where she calls home. She grew up as a third culture kid and has lived this global and inspirational experience which brought her to her purpose in life.

At a young age she was diagnosed with dyslexia and here starts her journey.... Unfortunately, at the time living in Tanzania, a country which had limited or no resources to support people with Learning Differences, she had to learn how to be the best dyslexic in order to succeed. She desperately wanted to be the same as every other student as well as achieve those amazing scores, so it was a realisation and awakening time where she found herself having to work twice as hard. As she transitioned from grade to grade, each year the workload increased so the challenges became tougher but never never gave up. Her good support network with great teachers at school and her family at home she was always encouraged to keep going.

Her self-esteem was her biggest struggle, she was labelled with dyslexia which had an immediate connection to all the negative prejudices possible, especially at a young age, you fear to be labeled by other kids as< "stupid" or "dumb".

She learned the skills to advocate for herself and this is when she realised her voice is her biggest strength and she wants to share her story to inspire others to develop skills and tools do thrive despite a learning difference.

Gabriela’s goal in life is to be a learning difference advocate, she wants to share her story to inspire young children and let them know that they can do anything that they set their minds too. She wants to create awareness of the topic and fighting the stigma associated with any learning difference. DYS does not mean “not able” because we are all able, sometimes it just takes different routes to get to the same place as others.

    TAKEAWAYS FROM THIS EPISODE:

    • Having a learning difference means you need to learn to become your own advocate.
    • Getting a diagnosis for a learning difference (for example dyslexia) helps students and adults getting accommodations in school and in the workplace.
    • Dyslexia is a learning difference, it is not a mental health issue.
    • There is still a lot of misinformation and stigmatisation around the topic of dyslexia around the globe.
    • Gabriela’s goal is becoming an activist and raising awareness around the topic of learning differences and especially dyslexia.

Dr. Paul Atkinson: The Fletcher Academy

Dr. Paul Atkinson: The Fletcher Academy

The pandemic upended a lot of things in education. Classes online. No sporting events. Masks and distancing. It has been tough for students, teachers, staff, and families. It has got us thinking about how education can be different and how we can best support our students. We chatted with Dr. Paul Atkinson, Head of School for The Fletcher Academy- A School of Achievement. The Fletcher Academy (TFA) is a school for students with learning differences. The effects of the pandemic aren't ideal for TFA's model. I talked with Paul about what has pivoting looked like and what he has been learning this year.

More than Mozart: Music Therapy with Karina Hall | Episode 11

When people hear the term “music therapy,” the typical picture that comes to mind is using classical or new age music to reach a state of relaxation. That is just one of the common misconceptions Karina Hall, Board-Certified Music Therapist at The Parish School, addresses. Karina Hall, MM, MT-BC, NMT, earned her BA in Music from the University of St. Thomas and her Master’s of Music from Sam Houston State University. Karina has a rich background of working with various special needs groups and providing therapy through music. The Parish School Way with Terri Garth | Episode 10

The Parish School Way with Terri Garth | Episode 10

Since 1983, The Parish School has educated children who have communication delays and learning differences, empowering them with the tools to succeed. In this episode, The Parish School’s director of arts and sciences, Terri Garth, discusses the history of The Parish School, provides background on the school’s founder and delves into the educational philosophy, therapeutic approach, and underlying beliefs that make up “The Parish Way.” Additionally, she explains the emphasis on the arts, nature-based learning and camp-like feel to the campus atmosphere, as well as the reasoning behind our multi-aged classroom approach. This episode offers something for everyone, no matter your level of familiarity with The Parish School.

    About Terri
Terri’s work as an educator began at The Parish School, where she was instrumental in the development of the school’s theater program, and later its Integrated Arts and Sciences department, which includes art and music classes and therapy, digital learning, a library with makerspace, theater, P.E., and nature studies. In addition to the big impact Terri makes in the academic lives of students, Terri co-founded the Margaret Noecker Nature Center in 2012. Utilizing The Parish School’s 17-acre campus, the Nature Center is an integrated, nature-based learning environment that facilitates children’s intellectual, social and emotional development through direct engagement with the natural world.

A former Parish parent herself, The Parish School would not be where it is today without Terri’s guidance, experience and passion.
