Session 81: Stopping Jumping On You and Other People

If there's one consistent thing that owners put at the top of their list for behaviors it's to keep their dogs from jumping on their owners and other people. I will discuss options and how to create the right environment for it.

I'll also talk about the modes of communication, starting with postural and vocal methods and their place in this type of training. These are essential in understanding the communication between you and any dog and is important when assessing feedback.

I'll talk about a loose leash technique and what things you'll look before that happen before your dog tries to jump.

First, today's rescue pup is Maia! Thanks to P.U.P. dog rescue as always and to get more information about Maia, visit the website by clicking here.

By the way, for training sessions like this one I’d recommend going back and listening to episodes 2, 3 and 4, if you haven’t listened to those already. Those episodes give you foundational understandings of my relationship-based method and some of the theoretical constructs that I refer to in training episodes of the podcast.

TOP 064: Tips for Leash Training a Dog ft. Tom Shelby

TOP 064: Tips for Leash Training a Dog ft. Tom Shelby

When it comes to training a dog, there are so many methods, tips and tricks out there that it can be impossible to decide which is right for you. Tom Shelby is the author of Dog Training Diaries: Proven Expert Tips and Tricks to Live in Harmony with Your Dog, and I had the pleasure of speaking with him about his chosen method of canine training.

I really enjoy and relate to Tom’s “depends” dog training method. He calls himself a “depends trainer,” because he says that the training style used depends on the dog, the situation, the environment and other variables. I have trained many dogs over the years, and I completely agree with this method.

Today, Tom explains more about his experience as a trainer and gives some great pointers for owners who are struggling with leash training. Leash training can be quite difficult with larger breeds, dogs that pull and/or dogs that have leash aggression. When is it time to throw in the towel and consult a professional for help? Tom discusses all of that and more in this week’s episode.

    Episode 422: Spring Training

    Episode 422: Spring Training

The sun is shining, the rain is washing away the last of the snow, and families are hitting the trails and sidewalks with their four-legged companions and that means it’s time for some spring training. Whether you share your home with a young puppy or a senior dog, getting out and reviewing the basics like sit, down, stay, and a good recall (coming when called) is a great idea, both for the safety of your pet, and for building your relationship. Of course, turning these exercises into fun games makes it even more enjoyable.

From lazy hounds to neurotic herders and every type in between, getting to know your furry family member through play and training, and finding ways for them to interact socially in appropriate ways with other dogs and people will make your home a little bit happier. To help us with our spring training, and answer questions from our social media audience, we were joined by dog trainer, and a good friend to both The Fur-Bearers and my own family, Kyla Boyer.

Petco Pulls Chinese-Made Dog Treats: Enter Fresh Dog

Petco Pulls Chinese-Made Dog Treats: Enter Fresh Dog

PETCO said Monday it has removed all remaining Chinese-made dog and cat treats from its website and stores nationwide because of concerns they have killed 1,000 dogs in the U.S. since 2007. The San Diego-based company and its rival PetSmart remove pet treats made in China after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it had received about 4,800 complaints of pet illnesses which may be linked to jerky treats made there. PETCO is the first national pet retailer to pull the treats from its 1,300 stores.

John Sturm, PETCO’s vice president of pet nutrition and merchandising, said “For us to make this decision, we had to take down a $30-million business and rebuild it from scratch,” he said. He also said the company expects to make up those sales as it expands its selection of treats from smaller vendors in the United States (as well as New Zealand, Australia and South America).

Enter Fresh Dog’s Dog Treats which are made in the USA and are100% Natural.

As a result of the very recent national news PETCO, Patriot-Made Audio interviewed Jim C. Cascarano of Fresh Dog. Take a listen our interview here.
