    004: Cesar Jung Harada

    004: Cesar Jung Harada

This episode features a conversation with teacher, artist, entrepreneur (and a few more things)...Cesar Jung Harada. You can find out more about Cesar at his website, cesarharada.com.

    Cesar's biography says:

Cesar Jung-Harada is a French-Japanese designer, environmentalist, educator, and entrepreneur, passionate about ocean technology, impact innovation, and education based in Singapore. Cesar is an Associate Professor of Design at the Singapore Institute of Technology. Cesar is currently a candidate Ph.D. in Design and Ocean Innovation at the CNAM (France), Former Director of MakerBay LTD (Hong Kong Makerspace), Scoutbots LTD (Ocean Robotic Startup). Cesar serves as a Trustee of the board of HBKU (Qatar), the Wyng Foundation (Hong Kong), and regularly delivers workshops and keynotes at international conferences in places such as the UN, Harvard or TED. See his projects.

As you'll hear, I first met Cesar back in the late 2000s, where he was making an audacious project at the Royal College of Art, with a note that said 'join me' - so I did! That project took me on a wild journey, and I learnt a lot from it. Since then, Cesar has worked, lived, and taught around the world, with a wealth of weird and wonderful experiences that he brings back into all of the other roles he has. I really enjoyed this conversation - there is a lot of wisdom in Cesar's words.

Please note, this conversation was recorded in 2022, when Cesar was teaching in Hong Kong. Since then, Cesar has moved from Hong Kong to Singapore.

Durhane Wong-Reiger, expert on access in low income Countries

Durhane Wong-Reiger, expert on access in low income Countries

Dr. Durhane Wong-Rieger is the President and CEO for the Canadian Organization for Rare Disorders. She is involved and Chair to many committees and organizations. She is also an author, lecturer and trainer. She is the perfect person to talk with about making healthcare a level playing field for all.  As you know we have interviewed so many people on this podcast talking about the challenges in different countries to medications. In Egypt the Ministry of health doesn’t recognize the disease, CF families there don’t have the basics like liquid vitamins for their infants. In Thailand, it’s the same, in India, infants are dying before they’re even diagnosed, in Pakistan, families can’t get drugs. And on and on.

Dr. Wong-Rieger recently presented at the World Health Organization, Essential Medicines Open Forum in regard to low- and middle-income countries access, or lack of it, to drugs.

Rare Disease International has done some research about this issue that Durhane will share with us.
Dr. Wong-Riegers organization has proposed to WHO for a collaboration on Essential Medicines for rare disease which ties to her collaboration on global rare disease networks.

There is an initiative the P-Q-M-D or Project for Quality Medicinal Donations that has been trying to launch on “donations to sustainability” that they are recruiting companies and donor foundations to try to support. This development of the initiative is now in Stage 2 of the feasibility work.

There are models out there for global work like the World Federation of Hemophilia and International Gaucher Foundation. There is no international CF organization so far, and we will discuss that here.

She is Chair of Rare Disease International, Chair of Asia Pacific Rare Disease International, Treasurer of United Nations Nongovernmental Organization for Rare Diseases.

Chair of Patient Advocates Constituency Committee of the International Rare Disease Research Consortium, Patient Advisor to the APEC Rare Disease Network, member of the Editorial Board of The Patient- Patient Centred Outcomes Research, member of the Global Commission to End the Diagnostic Odyssey for Rare Diseases and member of Health Technology Assessment International Patient /Citizen Involvement Interest Group.

Dr. Wong-Rieger has served on numerous health policy advisory committees and panels and is a member of Ontario’s Rare Disease Implementation Working Group and member of Genome Canada Steering Committee for the Rare Disease Precision Health Initiative. She is a certified Health Coach. Durhane has a PhD in psychology from McGill University and was professor at the University of Windsor, Canada.  She is a trainer and frequent lecturer and author of three books and many articles.

Episode 175: Innovation in Acculturation with Kobina Ankomah Graham Part 2
Greetings Glocal Citizens! My guest this week is Ghanaian-Briton, DJ, lecturer, cultural writer and researcher Kobina “Kobby” Ankomah Graham. Raised between the alternate realities of Ghana and Britain, he is passionately curious about music, African culture, and counterculture. Through almost two decades of lecturing, researching (https://kobbygraham.com/teaching-academia/), public speaking, developing creative projects, curating music (https://kobbygraham.com/selected-creative-and-cultural-activities/) and freelance writing (https://kobbygraham.com/freelance-writing/), he has championed arts and culture. He has explored this idea in settings ranging from classrooms to international conferences, and in numerous workshops, panels, podcasts, publications, and dance floors. Along the way, he has been profiled by platforms like the BBC, written for others like The Guardian (https://kobbygraham.com/freelance-writing/), received a Miles Morland African Writers Scholarship (https://milesmorlandfoundation.com/entry-requirements) and DANIDA (https://ghana.um.dk/en/danida-en) funding for Ph.D. research on Ghana’s alternative music scene. In doing these things, he is creating pathways for young African creatives, cultural practitioners and journalists to follow. These sentiments come through poetically in this two-part conversation offering wonder-filled insight into a life lived in Accra in view of an evolving arts and culture scene impacting both the local and global creative landscapes. Adjunct, Assistant, Associate: what’s the difference?

Today Claire and Ruth revisit the topic of job applications and discuss the different professor roles. They discuss the difference between tenure line professor positions (assistant, associate, full) and non-tenure line positions (adjunct, visiting), focusing on US definitions. They also discuss different types of institutions and how the role of the tenure line professor - and thus what makes a strong tenure line application package - varies between them.

Also, a special invitation - if you are in the hunt for a tenure line position and would like another set of eyes on your application materials, we would be glad to give our two cents!

A Delectable Supernatural Conversation with Author and Podcaster, Dr. Richard J. Sugg

Today's special guest is Dr. Richard Sugg. He is an accomplished author with 13 published books. His works have appeared in The Guardian, BBC History, Der Spiegel and The New Yorker. He has only recently ventured into the podcast arena with Dark Mysteries from the Secret University. Welcome to the show, Dr. Sugg!

We were introduced to one another through the fabulous Karen Rontowski. She said you are interested in the paranormal and consider yourself a skeptic. I like that. Open minded and searching for answers as you observe the world.

Our conversation dives deep into poltergeists, spiritual activity, a very personal account of a recent paranormal experience, and even pivots into Joseph Campbell and the collective consciousness. Dr. Richard Sugg is an interesting and delightful guest. I made him promise to return to Curious Cat before we wrapped!

Dr. Sugg has a new podcast, which I’m crazy about. Called: Dark Histories from the Secret University – (JH) You’ve taught at universities, written many books, and now a podcast. What was the impetus to this?

    The Culture of Artificial Intelligence

    The Culture of Artificial Intelligence

In her talk, “The Culture of Artificial Intelligence”, Mercedes Bunz explores the particular power of AI systems using work from contemporary artists to reveal the human misunderstanding regarding AI.

To celebrate 60 years of the Goethe-Institut London, we held three Goethe Annual Lectures in 2022. For our second GAL, we invited Professor Mercedes Bunz to discuss “The Culture of Artificial Intelligence”. In her talk, she explores the particular power of AI systems using work from contemporary artists to reveal the human misunderstanding regarding AI. The talk was moderated by Eva Jäger, curator of Arts Technologies at Serpentine.

Mercedes Bunz is a professor in Digital Culture and Society at the Department of Digital Humanities, King's College London. She studied Philosophy, Art History, and Media Studies at the FU Berlin and the Bauhaus University Weimar, and wrote her thesis on ‘The history of the internet-driven by a deep curiosity about digital technology'. Until today, she has not been disappointed by the transforming field that is digital technology, which provides her reliably with new aspects to think constantly about. At the moment, that is Artificial Intelligence and ‘machine learning’. Delving into the topics of AI and ‘machine learning’, Bunz co-leads the Creative AI Lab, a collaboration with the Serpentine Gallery, London.
