33: Military Leadership Books Every Correctional Leader Should Read - Part 2

In this episode I finish talking about the Military Leadership Books Every Correctional Leader Should Read.

In Episode 30, I covered Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink and Lief Babin.

In this episode, I talk about Left of Bang by Patrick Van Horn and Jason Riley.  This book will help you hone your intuition and your understanding of human behavior.  A must-read for anyone working in prison.  Have you ever stood mainline and thought "It's too quiet."  This is the type of intuition that prevents problems before they happen.

The last book is It's Your Ship by Captain D. Michael Abrashoff where he details the leadership approach that encourages letting your staff do their job.  Find what they are skilled at and let them shine.

#122: How To Build a Solution

#122: How To Build a Solution

On today’s episode we are continuing our discussion from the previous two episodes where we talked about the contributing factors that lead to many of the high profile police use of force incidents that occur.

In this episode we discuss how to build a solution that that accounts for many of the contributing factors. We center the discussion around Policy, Training, and Support, but we also get into the different types of costs associated with policy decisions.

A lot of what we are trying to do is to get people to ask the right questions which we believe is the first and most important step in building a solution. In the words of physicist Werner Heisenberg,

“We have to remember that what we observe is not nature in itself but nature exposed to our method of questioning.”

On today’s episode, Greg and Brian start out with a recent Hollywood Scam that Brian was involved in. Greg and Brian explain HOW people fall for these types of schemes and how that relates to the current behavior we are seeing around the protests and the social media response that comes along with it. Stick around until the end when we put things in perspective by relating it to our own emotional reactions to these events.

#070: The Recent Mass Shooting in Canada

On today's episode, Greg and Brian are going to be talking about the recent mass shooting in Nova Scotia, Canada. Please keep in mind that we recorded this episode on the morning of April 22nd when the details of the case were still being reported.

During the episode, we explain how to conduct real-time predictive analysis during an in-progress situation so that even during a chaotic event you can stay left of the next bang. We discuss the pre-event indicators leading up to the event as well as the indicators DURING the 12 hours shooting spree that you could use to determine likely intent, even as the events are unfolding.

On today’s episode, Greg and Brian are giving you the real story behind the recently released Richard Jewell movie that tells the story of the Centennial Park bombing at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta.
The real bomber, Eric Rudolph, carried out three more bombing attacks after Centennial Park and was on the run for 5 years before he was finally caught. Greg and Brian discuss what happens when you put too much importance on ideology rather than focusing on the evidence.

Left of Greg #058: Why do people think the earth is flat?
