Voices and Votes: Shaping the Democratic Landscape in Africa — Boniface Dulani

The landscape of democracy in Africa is characterized by a dynamic interplay between achievements and obstacles, particularly as the continent approaches a pivotal year with numerous elections scheduled in 2024. Countries such as South Africa, Namibia, Mozambique, and Senegal are preparing for electoral contests, underscoring a persistent belief in the electoral system as a legitimate means to select leaders and representatives. Despite this faith in democracy, there is widespread disenchantment with the efficacy and fairness of the electoral process, highlighted by incidents of voter fraud and judicial rulings overturning elections. Concerns about democracy also extend to the debate on presidential term limits and the apparent unwillingness of some incumbents to vacate office. Insights from Afrobarometer surveys reveal the African public’s priorities and concerns, emphasizing issues like unemployment, economic stewardship, and healthcare. These survey findings illustrate a clear demand for democratic governance amidst dissatisfaction with how democracy currently operates, particularly in relation to corruption. Yet, amidst these challenges, there exists a sense of optimism about the future of democracy in Africa. This optimism is fueled by the continent's resilient civil society, the transformative potential of its young population, and examples of successful democratic transitions, suggesting a pathway towards more effective and representative governance.

Boniface Dulani is an Associate Professor of Political science at the University of Malawi. He is also the Director of Surveys for the Afrobarometer, a pan African network of researchers who conduct surveys on governance, economy, and livelihoods. @IPORMalawi

    Lesotho

    Lesotho

Deep within the country of South Africa, we have another country completely inside, #lesotho.  Lesotho is one of the highest countries on Earth. Well by average height. The lowest point here is higher than the lowest point anywhere else. Or something like that.

They have a lot of water...but unfortunately for Lesotho, they sell most of it to their neighbor South Africa.

It's also a land famous for it's distinct hat...and boy do we get into a deep discussion about hats. Check it out and maybe you'll learn a thing or two! It's about time you did, right?

Have you been to Lesotho? Tell us what we missed or what we (hopefully) got right!

Purpose before profit - a radical new vision for football

Purpose before profit - a radical new vision for football

When it comes to books about sport, Radical Football is perhaps in a category all of its own. One-part biography, one-part documentary and one-part call to action.

It is a pleasure to have the author Steve Fleming on the podcast to discuss the life of Jürgen Griesbeck and the story of Football for Good. We delve into the complicities of managing a relationship with both resource- and controversy-rich FIFA, what led Steve to set up the inspiring Kick4Life in Lesotho, and where Sport for Development can go from here.

The book finishes with a hopeful vision for football's future, one that puts purpose firmly ahead of profit as the main value to be leveraged. It’s a vision that, if successfully materialised, would redistribute more of the value of the beautiful game back to those who play it and provide a powerful vehicle for social development. It’s a vision worth working towards!

Did you know that English spelling - that crazy jumble of illogical rules on top of a thousand exceptions - is even more discombobulated than you thought? That's because how you spell many words also depends on where you are. Are you trying to reach an American audience? Then you need to follow American English. Are you hoping to attract the attention of the British? Then you need to use British English. These are the two main variants when it comes to English orthography. But there is a middle variant: Canadian English, a happy hybrid of the two! But never fear - today's episode will explain why these differences exist and will break down the main spelling differences for your ease and understanding! And then we will begin our new cultural tip on the country of Lesotho!

Digital Healing and Radical Self-Acceptance (Puleng Mongale)

Digital Healing and Radical Self-Acceptance (Puleng Mongale)

This week, Shades and Layers is proud to present the story of Digital Collage Artist, Puleng Mongale.

Puleng grew up in the cultural melting pot of Soweto township. Her young years there are filled with joy, but they have also been a source of pain and a feeling of displacement. While Soweto is a cultural melting pot, it is also a place where South Africa's cultural and language groups compete for superiority on an imaginary cultural totem.

In our conversation we discuss dealing with displacement, radical self-acceptance, using art as a tool for healing.

Puleng has always had a passion for the arts (especially writing and fashion) and started out as a copy writer at an advertising agency. During this period, she was also sharpening her skills as a creative director and exploring photography.  After being laid off at the start of the Covid pandemic, she bought herself a camera, learned to use it and never looked back. In our conversation, we discuss her various projects, putting a monetary value on her work and also how to approach life with curiosity.

I hope you'll enjoy this amazing conversation and will be inspired to follow your own authentic journey into the things that you're passionate about.

    MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE

Latitudes - Online Art platform that represents Puleng and many other cutting edge contemporary artists from the African continent.

Seshoeshoe (Seshweshwe) - Cotton fabric named after the Basotho King Moshoeshoe and originally bearing designs inspired by traditional murals in Lesotho. Today it is a fashion staple at traditional weddings across South Africa and can be seen at other formal occasions as well as everyday fashion.

Jake - Famous and iconic public swimming pool in Orlando West area of Soweto. The link goes to a photograph captured by South African photographer Jodi Beiber

Badimo - A SeSotho word meaning ancestors or spirits.

    MALUTI MAGIC

In today’s episode, we head to the magical kingdom of Lesotho, where we meet Moliehi Mafantiri, the co-founder of the fast-growing sustainable homeware brand, Barali

Moliehi co-founded the company with her high school friend, Mookho Ntho, with the aim of sharing Basotho culture through storytelling, preserving local traditions and contributing to the Lesotho textile industry in a sustainable way.

The two women also run a design studio, which funds their homeware brand, while amplifying their fellow Basotho’s voices, and they have started a digital story archive called Bonesa, which means to illuminate …

In between all of this Moliehi is pursuing her Masters in Environment and Society at the University of Pretoria.

We had this conversation just as she finished her mid-years, and we had the chance to explore topics like the challenges of finding local interest in sustainable design, the joys of reflecting traditions they treasure in their work with Barali and paying homage to other trailblazers who are choosing the road less traveled.

Mentions and Links in this episode

Fair Trade - this links to an article that cites the pros and cons of Fair Trade. In the context of this episode of Shades and Layers this topic is discussed with Barali's working environment in mind. They source directly from mohair producers in rural Lesotho and South Africa,  with the intention of bringing fair, equitable and sustainable manufacturing practices to the Lesotho Textile industry.  Could the Fair Trade model be one to copy?

Dianamarena (pl.)/Seanamarena (sing.) - Lesotho traditional blanket
Here is more about Mookho's art:
Mokorotlo Hat - Traditional Basotho hat made from grass.
Bonesa - A Sesotho word meaning 'to shine a light on or illuminate'. Follow the link to read the story 'Mapei' by author Moso Sematlane

Ep. #22| Value and Worth, Where Does Your Value and Worth Come From, I'm Finding Society Attributes and Attaches These To Some Of The More Arbitrary Stuff
Perfection is truly the disease of our society and like Queen, B said "it's the soul that needs a surgery". In today's episode I talk about worth and value, where does my worth and value come from? Can worth be taken away, is it a movable asset? When all the arbitrary things we attach to our worth and value, having money, being a parent, being coupled, having a certain degree or status, the religions we follow, the car we drive, the job title we have, when all of that is stripped away what is left? Who is left? As Beyonce asks in her masterful and societal commentary song "pretty hurts" - When you're alone all by yourself When you're lying in your bed, Reflection stares right into you, Are you happy with yourself? Stripped away the masquerade The illusion has been shed, Are you happy with yourself? Are you happy with yourself? These are questions that I've been asking myself and I think I'm starting to see the answers. Let's talk about worth and value in a society obsessed with perfection.

Ep. #21| Mental Health: I'm Trying To Not Be Dealing With The Same Shit and Trauma Into My 30s, Trying To Kill My Ego, The Ego Death Experience
There is a beauty I have come to find in suffering. The other day I sat on my toilet seat 🤣😎 (TMI) but whatever), reminiscing, and found myself being actually appreciative and grateful for the very difficult year of suffering and loss I've been thrown into. There is a power in watching everything go wrong and then realizing you are still here, alive, breathing with the sands of time still in your favor. One of the reasons for this dawn came through exploring mental health and really diving into my inner-self and starting to address all the things that I have left to fester. I'm approaching 30 and I sure as hell don't want to be dealing with the same shit then. Let's talk about mental health, suffering, healing, and addressing and understanding the ego. Ep. #20 | Discipline, How I lack It and How It's Holding Me Back. Gosh Should I Just Confess That I Do Laziness Better?
It's FRIDAY the 13TH and I have decided to HAUNT myself today 😂😂😂. I just feel like I have made a life choice to soak, dwell and bathe in laziness. Yes, I am on Spring break after wrapping up a very difficult and challenging first year of my MBA studies BUT this form of sloth has been a long time coming. I can binge-watch K-dramas for between 8 to 10 hours straight a day, especially if it is one of THOSE shows. I lose track of what I do in my day and where my hours go with little to no guilt. This lack of growth-inducing upward mobilizing habits is NOT IT. I hate it and I've realized that your girl LACKS discipline. Oh, my old friend, good'ol discipline, I had you and then I lost you. Discipline sounds painful, it triggers memories of suffering and force and therefore doesn't feel good (easy) to do. BUT one thing I know is if I'm going to become the version of me I'm visualizing and striving for, this one small but mountainous act is going to be an integral part of the process. So I'm trying to get me some! let's talk about Discipline, is it more than just the sheer exertion of the will of power?, cause brah, I ain't got non of that right now! Ep. #19.2 | Miscarriages: The Difficult Healing Process, What Men and Spouses Go Through, Coming Out the Other Side Ft Ndamu
The female body is arguably one of the most powerful forces exiting in our current realm. It breaks itself apart monthly and puts itself back together again. It houses and nourishes life, but it's also one of society's most misunderstood, exploited, and devalued forces. One such way the female body experiences this; is in pregnancy. The monolithic expectation of pregnancy that leads to a healthy birth has forced many women into silence and hiding when their body doesn't meet this expectation. In today's episode, I talk about miscarriages with one of my favorite people and someone who has experienced one of the most stigmatized and loneliest losses a woman must live through. Ep. #16 | Sex for Grades A case study on Ghana, On the backdrops of African traditional gender roles, internalized misogyny, female genital mutilation Ft. Tshima
She's back! Welcome back! My sister and I are back in this two-episode special. In this episode, we dig into how sex-for grades have become a thing in Africa and how men are using their positions of power to assault and exploit their female students, with our lens shifting specifically to Ghana. What is the kind of environment that even allows for something like this to happen? We look at the role of African Traditionalism with its customs such as female genital mutilation and imposed gender roles and how these perpetuate internalized misogyny and the abandonment of young women in Africa.

Ep. #15 | The Objectification and Over-sexualization of Women, the Role Social Media Plays and the Power of the Male Gaze ft Tshima
This episode is one for the books, featuring arguably my favorite person in the world talking about a topic that we are both very curious and interested in. You know you cannot scroll through Instagram without coming across some boodies and titties, it's all the rage, it's all the likes and it's all the fluence and all the follows. Are women now objectifying themselves, and does this make it, okay seeing as it's on our terms, or is the male gaze still the stirrer of all this shit and if so, is self-objectification then really not that empowering. Lets talk about it!
