    Remembering Denny Crum

    Remembering Denny Crum

We share a few memories of legendary University of Louisville basketball coach Denny Crum on this week's Access Louisville podcast.
Crum, who coached at Louisville from 1971 to 2001, died this week at age 86. Reporter Michael L. Jones recalls his involvement in the community, including his presence at LEO, while host David A. Mann looks back at covering the last years of Crum's coaching tenure while working at the student run Louisville Cardinal newspaper back in 2001.
Later in the show we talk about some recent restaurant news, including the opening of Gus's Friend Chicken and a new Chinese buffet on Gardiner Lane.

    A new era for UofL

    A new era for UofL

For fans of University of Louisville men's basketball, the last season may have been forgettable. But last week was most certainly memorable, as the program ushered  in a new era with the hiring of coach Kenny Payne.

On this week's Access Louisville podcast, LBF reporter Laurel Deppen talks about this hire after attending the news conference where he was officially introduced. Reporter Michael L. Jones and Editor Jason Thomas give us their take as well.

Of course, this big hire comes as March Madness is still underway, which gives us more basketball to talk about. This year will be a bit lacking for fans in the area because Louisville failed to make the tournament and the University of Kentucky and Indiana University were defeated in the first round.

After the basketball talk we turn our attention to Opportunity Louisville — a special report on the economic issues and opportunities facing the city.

16 predictions for Louisville in 2022

16 predictions for Louisville in 2022

What does 2022 hold for Louisville?
On this week's Access Louisville podcast a full crew of Louisville Business First staffers give predictions for the year. We take on a full range of topics: What will happen with Downtown office buildings, what new stores might come to town, what new restaurants might open and even what will become of specific projects such as the Starks Building and One Park. A few tech predictions make their way in there as well.
The predictions show has become a tradition these last few years with this being the third one. Time will tell if any of these predictions come true (we were hit and miss on our predictions for 2021.)

We predicted Louisville's future ... sorta

We predicted Louisville's future ... sorta

Was 2021 predictable? In some ways, yeah.
Last year around this time the Access Louisville podcast crew made several predictions about what 2021 had in store. On this week's show we go back and talk about what we got right and what we got wrong.
In some cases the predictions were spot on. For instance, LBF Editor Shea Van Hoy somehow correctly predicted that Muhammad Ali Airport would get a flight to Boston.  But in other cases — such as a prediction that a downtown hotel would close — we were way off (several downtown hotels actually opened.)
We also had a few predictions that were hard to quantify. For instance, was it a make or break year for restaurants? Probably. We certainly saw some places close. But we also saw some new places open ... so it's a bit debatable.

A Louisville company's quest for better decision making in sports

A Louisville company's quest for better decision making in sports

In a football game, is it usually better to go for it on 4th and short? Or is punting the safer bet
It actually depends on a lot of different factors and the situation, of course. But making that decision correctly, in a specific situation, is one thing that Louisville tech company EdjSports strives to help teams do. The company provides data and analytics to improve decision making in sports. This week on the Access Louisville podcast, we sit down with EdjSports Co-founder Sean O'Leary to talk about a recent move that will put the company more in focus for its founders.
We also talk about the market for sports betting, prospects for Louisville's entrepreneurial scene and more.
