    Insufficient Glandular Tissue

    Insufficient Glandular Tissue

Have you ever received a diagnosis of Insufficient Glandular Tissue? Maybe it was suggested after you weren’t able to produce a full milk supply with your last baby. Or the term was tossed out casually when a provider looked at your breasts prenatally.

IGT can be a scary and confusing thing to hear, particularly when you have the goal of exclusive breastfeeding! Today on the Milk Minute Heather and Maureen chat about what IGT is and what it might mean for you.

How much milk can you actually make with IGT? What can you expect? Do you need to breastfeed differently if you suspect you have IGT?

Join the Milk Minute to get the answers to these questions and more today on any podcast platform.

Listener Question: I have a question about flange sizes: I had been using at 24mm flange and the people at the hospital told me that size was fine. Then I measured myself and was 17mm. I got 21mm inserts and now when I pump my nipples are tender. I'm due for replacement parts and am looking for advice about what to order.

Nipples, shields, infant sucking, pumping, and milk volumes - An interview with Prof Donna Geddes

Nipples, shields, infant sucking, pumping, and milk volumes - An interview with Prof Donna Geddes

Professor Donna Geddes is the director of the Geddes Hartmann Human Lactation Research Group. Based in Perth, Australia, the group is made up of innovative and dedicated scientists and students that have a passion for developing measurements of lactation and breastfeeding and then applying them to make a difference to clinicians and breastfeeding families. The group makes a point of not only publishing their findings in scientific journals but spreading their information via free online articles and social media on Facebook, Twitter, Linked In.

Donna has a medical imaging background with an emphasis in ultrasound imaging. She has integrated this modality into many of the group’s studies providing a ‘window’ to different physiological processes during lactation. If you have listened to our previous podcast where I have spoken about the in quotes discovery of the breast anatomy - this is Donna! She showed the world the true anatomy of the lactating breast and could visualize how milk ejection occurs through her ultrasound techniques.  Her findings have attracted much international attention and she is often requested to speak at both International and National Scientific Meetings. She is the Secretary for the International Society for Research in Human Milk and Lactation.

    In this episode

    ·      the tools and technology we currently use and what we could be seeing in the future

    ·      using technology to identify if milk has come in or if there's inflammation in the breast

    ·      how to accurately test milk volumes

    ·      the controversial topic of test weighing

    ·      identifying lactation issues correctly- sucking and milk transfer and/or milk supply problems

    ·      nipple pain and nipple shields

    ·     and we look at extremely high suck vacuum levels and effects on breastfeeding

    Breastmilk jewelry: The Milky Fern

    Breastmilk jewelry: The Milky Fern

In this episode, Amanda shares how she was organically led into starting a business creating jewelry out of breast milk. She shares how starting a business was never her intention. After a struggle with breastfeeding, she happened to stumble across breastmilk jewelry and instantly knew she wanted a piece for herself, but quickly discovered all of the pieces she liked were completely out of her price range. So, she decided she would do it herself. It took her a long time to perfect the process, but she refused to quit; she was determined to prove to herself that she could figure it out and make a completed piece. Once she did, her friends started asking her to make them their own unique pieces. She has recently celebrated her first year in business and has been nominated for two business awards. She started with her friends and through word of mouth, then spread locally and is now making pieces for clients as far away as Australia .

Amanda is the founder, owner and jewelry maker at The Milky Fern.

Today I am speaking with Victoria with Milk Made Mama and she is here to speak with us about low milk supply. She is another lactation educator and I found her information valuable. 55 | Make a Splash! Want more breast milk or wanna feel extra nourished?

I see some of the struggles that folks face as new parents and specifically noticing what new mamas are dealing with. Today’s episode is focused on breast milk and postpartum nutrition which could also be applicable to any human who wants to feel more nourished and vibrant. New mamas need extra nutrient density. The experience of growing and giving birth to a babe is a stressor on the body and a mom may be depleted. I’m going to talk about some of the top 15 foods, 15 herbs, and top 10 supplements a person could take to boost vitality and may help with milk production.

Disclosure-I’m not a doctor- do your own research and consult a licensed professional with the knowledge that you get to be the ultimate authority of your own body. Do what feels right for you. I’m not here to diagnose or prescribe. I am here to educate and entertain.

Oh another disclaimer. This episode might make you hungry.

Writing these show notes had me running to the kitchen for more snacks. So just as you don’t want to go to the grocery store hungry, you may not want to listen to this episode hungry.

    Encore: Hypno-Breastfeeding?
You've heard of hypnosis. You may even be familiar with hypnobirthing (the topic of Marie's June 15, 2015 episode: http://www.voiceamerica.com/episode/85954/hypnobirthing). Did you know hypnosis can be a positive tool for breastfeeding, too? Join Marie as she talks with special guest Robin Frees, IBCLC about how mothers can use hypnosis to overcome barriers that commonly arise during breastfeeding, such as low milk supply, and inhibited milk ejection reflex. Find out about strategies such as hypnotic relaxation, imagery, and breathing, and learn how these can help whether you're breastfeeding the baby in your arms or using a pump to express milk for later feeding. This just might make the difference between surviving your breastfeeding experience and celebrating it! Questions? E-mail radio@bborntobebreastfed.com any time.

Join Marie and guest Leigh Anne O'Connor IBCLC for insight, tips, and resources that will help ensure you meet your breastfeeding goals. If you need a little help, words of encouragement, and practical advice, this show is for you!

Eating Your Placenta: The Pros and Cons You Need to Know

Eating Your Placenta: The Pros and Cons You Need to Know
Biologist Charles Darwin famously pointed out that there are many similarities between humans and other mammals. Now, many mothers are wondering: Should we take a tip from the animal kingdom when it comes to placentas? Kim Kardashian West, January Jones and many others have consumed theirs. Is there some health-based reason for doing so? What are the benefits? The risks? Join Marie as she talks with nurse/lactation consultant/herbalist Donna Walls about the increasingly common practice of eating the placenta. Is it a new fad? An ancient practice? Why is it done? How can it be prepared—and more to the point—how should it be prepared? What are the myths, and the facts, around this practice? How does it affect milk supply—if at all? Whether or not you have consumed placenta yourself, whether or not you're planning to do so in the future, this is one interesting Born to be Breastfed you won't want to miss.
