How Filmmaking Taught Me to Advocate for Incarcerated Persons featuring Katherin Hervey

If you think having a law degree limits your creativity you haven’t met Katherin Hervey.  Katherin has worked as a magazine editor, a public defender, a film enthusiast, a holistic artist, a director, and filmmaker.

After studying cross-cultural communications, which was a self-designed major at the University of Washington, Katherin found that curating her own degree was her way of diving into her interests.  Katherin was able to take women's studies courses, ethnicity, psychology and  sociology courses which motivated Katherin to pick up a camera.

Katherin Hervey attended law school at Loyola- Los Angeles and later became a public defender.  Katherin found the tradition, patriarchy, and hierarchical processes of law school to be stifling, and Katherin rebelled against most of what she saw in law school.  Law school inspired Katherin to wonder about the people behind the case law and find her own way to tell stories of others.

Katherin’s interest in the background stories combined with her experiences as a public defender in California motivated Katherin to go behind the prison walls to share the stories of men on death row. Katherin wants you to know that the stories of the men behind the walls could be you, these men could be your brothers, uncles, or nephews.

Katherin used language and terminology learned from being a public defender while appealing to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation to gain access to the men inside.  Katherin’s mission in filming ‘The Prison Within’ is to show the empathy of the men behind the walls; show the work that these men are completing and showing their humanity.  Every person is on a parallel journey to healing and these men are not unlike the lives of those who live the outside of the walls.

Although Katherin believes that she would have taken a creative path regardless of attending law school, Katherin Hervey knows that she would not have created a project like ‘The Prison Within’ had she never attended law school.

Katherin Hervey is licensed in California.  Connect with Katherin Hervey on Instagram @theprisonwithin.

Jeff Fryer: Journey of Faith (Former LMU Star)

Jeff Fryer: Journey of Faith (Former LMU Star)

What better way to start off our list of guests for season 2 than this one?! We got a piece of basketball history and hoops nostalgia in the house today. Jeff Fryer joins us to share his basketball journey and we are blessed to have him.

Loyola Marymount University brought so much excitement to the college hoops scene from 1986-1990. Jeff Fryer was a huge part their success playing alongside Bo Kimble and Hank Gathers in that legendary, fast-paced offense of Paul Westhead where they put up an NCAA record of 122.4 points per game. Fryer could light it up in hurry. In fact, he still holds the NCAA tournament record for most 3-point field goals in a game (11) against the defending champ Michigan Wolverines. He is also the former NCAA All-Time career leader in 3-point field goals made (363). Any basketball junkie remembers his playing days at LMU, but we also got to learn about the draft process, playing overseas, coaching, remembering Hank Gathers, and the important role that his faith has played up to this point.

BIG thanks to Jeff Fryer. We are so honored to have this opportunity to pick his brain, hear his story, and learn more about this college team that had one of the most impressive and emotional tournament runs of all time. Faith can take you far in life and we love to see that it has continued to take Jeff down a path where he can give back.

    Thank you Jeff Fryer!

    Michelle Badillo - S**y Besties

    Michelle Badillo - S**y Besties

Michelle Badillo is a screenwriter and actor from Queens, New York. We are globally renown best friends. Michelle is a sexy television writer and humorist, best known for her work on One Day At A Time, the Netflix reboot of the original Norman Lear sitcom, and The Bold Type, a show about young journalists for which she probably drew great inspiration from my life.

You also might recognize Michelle from the steamy, non-binary facesitting scene in season one, episode three of the Starz show Vida. She's appeared in Vogue because modeling is very easy for her.

Michelle is so funny, so smart, so silly, so naughty, so sweet, etc.

We talk about The Hills: New Beginnings, especially how emotional Michelle became when Mischa Barton appeared on screen and how much we love Brandon Thomas Lee. We tell the story of how we met and our first impressions of one another – including lip rings, crowns, bodycon dresses, cigarettes, screenwriting, Facebook and early bedtimes. We also reflect on trusting our intuition, coming out after a GSA meeting and noticing childhood class dynamics.

We mock the trust fund kids we went to school with, including their helicopters home to La Jolla, self-driving sports cars and wack-job parents. Michelle has the nerve to disclose where we attended school and I covertly assert that I was too smart to go there. I finally admit that I was famous but bullied on campus.

We talk about the unique way moms talk about their daughters' bodies and Michelle teaches me how to become a successful screenwriter. I qualify multiple comments with "not to stigmatize" because I don't want to stigmatize. Michelle sings a couple of showtunes, lusts after Megan Fox and reflects on the more challenging aspects of lending her own teenage experiences as a queer woman of color to a character on TV.

Finally, we play "Tierney Answers," an incredible new segment where my guest interviews me about my many attributes and preferences.
