Episode 24: Durand Jones: 'Wait Til I Get Over'

Episode 24: Durand Jones: 'Wait Til I Get Over'

On this episode, Lauren is joined by the wonderful American singer-songwriter Durand Jones. As a founding member of popular soul group Durand Jones & the Indications, the band have released 3 studio albums since 2018.

In May this year, Durand released his debut solo album ‘Wait Til’ I Get Over’, a veneration project—an abstracted and contemporary oral tradition that passes story down from (and heaps homage upon) his hometown of Hillaryville, Louisiana.

The album is a study into Durand’s relationship to his roots: to a Black, country, barefoot childhood; to the verdant Gulf South, leaning into the vulnerability of his singular perspective, delivering something utterly distilled and potent.

The record beautifully muses on the past, it equally honours his present and future as Durand has and continues to come into his own.

Together, Durand and Lauren have a wonderful, open and honest chat about the many personal and cultural influences behind the record.

Without context for what was popular, they swiftly developed a sound meticulously their own.

In July this year, they released their mesmerising debut solo album ‘Grace After a Party’. Populated by stories of body-swapping and clowns, Coulter’s music takes us beyond the personal, traveling from London to Perugia, to the circus and the sea.
