From a young age, Tim Frick knew that he wanted to make instruments. As a teenager, he began building basses for himself. He'd eventually take a class with famed archtop guitarmaker Tom Ribbecke, work at Gary Brawer's repair shop in San Francisco, and then spend years alongside lutherie legend Frank Ford at Gryphon Guitars in Palo Alto, California.
These days, Frick is based in Portland, Oregon, where he repairs guitars and builds his own archtop guitar creations. For episode 75 of the podcast, Tim tells us about his journey, why he uses mostly hand tools, and his thoughts on voicing archtops. We also talk Japanese hand tools and much more.

Gael McKeon is a double bass luthier who recently moved back to the United States after moving his shop to Toulouse, France. He was based in the San Francisco Bay Area from 2011 to 2018, and we recorded a podcast back in 2018 right before he relocated.
We talk about Gael’s past few years and his shift into bass building. He is currently focused on building instruments of his own design, inspired by classic and modern forms and ideas. His first completed bass is currently in the Finlay+Gage showroom in New York City.

"C’est assez difficile de reprendre confiance en soi. Malheureusement l’éducation nationale nous demande de toujours entrer dans un cadre. Mais on n’entre pas toujours dans un cadre. J’ai eu la chance de rencontrer André Gorgeon qui m’a donné la foi et l’envie de fabriquer des instruments avec mes mains, et on voit très vite la construction, la finalisation. Et lorsqu’on a un morceau de bois qui devient un meuble, qui devient un instrument de musique, qu’on peut jouer sous ses doigts, ça peut être que merveilleux. »
Vous savez comment on appelle l’artisan des violons ? Un luthier. Mais connaissez-vous le métier de facteur de vielle à roue ? C’est celui de Sébastien Tourny ! C’est un ébéniste au service des instruments de musiques. Ils leurs façonnent une coque de bois pour habitacle. Une coque qui ressemble à un petit bateau. Puis des cordes comme cœur, pour vibrer. Sébastien est aussi musicien. Un artisan musicien, en somme, installé à La châtre, une commune de l’Indre.

My friend Bernie is eclectic – now retired constitutional law expert born in Canada’s far north whose hobby is handmade guitars. He’s still got his first guitar, bought at the age of 13 with money made from selling his own paintings - landscapes from his childhood in the far north.
Guitars have been in his heart for his whole life. About twenty years ago, he was able take up the hobby of building them, made possible by the suggestion of his three kids, then under the age of ten, and the support of his lovely wife, and fellow lawyer, Laura. Bernie says he’s made guitars for dictators and democrats, and he’s not kidding. I’ll leave that story to him.
His work is wonderful, and guitars are made specific to the customer, reflecting their personalities, not just their specifications. He makes guitars with spirit, from wood specially chosen for the purpose, creating a musical instrument that sighs and sings as the artist wends their way into magic-making. That’s a special skill, that is. I hope you enjoy this episode of Meanderings with Trudy.

Author Kristina R. Gaddy joins us this week to talk about her new book, 'Well of Souls: Uncovering the Banjo's Hidden History.'
This is unlike any instrument history book you've ever read... and we can't recommend it enough.
Though it's widely known that the banjo was brought to the Americas via enslaved Black people, there's so much we still don't know about this instrument's earliest period. Through journal entries, books, art, surviving instruments, and some amazing detective work, Gaddy reveals that the banjo wasn't just a musical instrument for slaves... it was also a deeply important spiritual tool.
During our chat, we ask Gaddy about the making of the book, the unlikely places she found her evidence, and the construction of those earliest instruments. We also talk about the banjo's growing popularity with a new generation of Black musicians.

Aujourd'hui je vous parle d'un passionné de guitare qui depuis ses 18 ans, fabrique ses instruments en amateur et qui grâce aux outils numériques a pu faire de sa passion un métier celui de luthier.
Après ses études, en 2007, Clément Guéton, avec un diplôme de designer industriel s'est lancé dans la vie active. Il a rapidement été embauché par une société spécialisée dans la fabrication de poêle à bois et cheminée.
Armé d'une souris ou d'un crayon à papier, il a alors dessiné toute la journée des ces deux éléments de chauffage au gré des désirs des clients dans la limite des contraintes techniques.
En même temps, Clément consacrait alors tout son temps libre à son instrument fétiche, la guitare. Il en jouait bien sûr mais en fabriquait aussi grâce au savoir-faire acquis durant ses études.
Les années ont passé et l'entreprise a décliné. Tant et si bien que Clément, en 2014 s'est vu remercié avec des indemnités. L'occasion pour le luthier amateur de se lancer. Sans boutique et pour se faire connaître, il a tout simplement choisi de vendre ses guitares sur un site internet, sur lequel il a tout misé. Il s'est d'ailleurs formé à cet effet, pour être le mieux référencé possible.

Sur ce site, tout y est, le catalogue, les photos des prototypes, les prix...mais aussi un configurateur qui permet aux clients de choisir les caractéristiques de leur guitare avant de passer commande.... une quantité d'options est disponible dans la fabrication du futur instrument.
Le site comporte aussi toute la partie réparation, avec à chaque fois, une illustration et le tarif pour changer une corde de guitare ou un micro.
Et face à ce vaste choix d'options, le client n'est il pas perdu ? Il peut toujours envoyer des mails pour des questions ou tout simplement appeler de vive voix Clément.
Et ça marche, puisque le site est aujourd'hui le second recommandé par Google pour tout ce qui est "guitare made in France" ou encore " guitare sur mesure".
Mais Clément n'est pas qu'un exécutant des désirs des clients, comme il l'était pour les poêles à bois, il dessine et crée lui-même les instruments. Avec un papier et une feuille mais aussi une quantité d'instruments informatiques qui laisse libre choix à son imagination en terme de couleur, de graphisme ou encore de matière.
Ce qu'apprécient nombre de musiciens, certains plus ou moins connus dans le milieu du rock métal...qui font fonctionner le bouche à oreille.
Clément a aussi créé de petites vidéos de démonstration de ses instruments sur sa chaîne Youtube. Là aussi, toute la communication est maîtrisée...les images et le son sont de bonne qualité et les vidéos dédiées aux guitares très informatives et bien illustrées.
Du coup, nul besoin de boutiques physiques. De toute façon, les deux tiers des clients de Clément n'habitent pas sa région .
De nombreuses commandes se font uniquement par mail, messagerie instantanée et téléphone, ensuite la guitare terminée, elle est envoyée via transporteur.
Dans l'ensemble Clément est plutôt fier et satisfait de s'être lancé dans l'aventure mais n'a qu'un seul regret...il n'a plus le temps de jouer de son propre instrument.
