Chapter Eighty - Sansa 7 - A Storm of Swords | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Sansa builds a snow-castle, and squabbles with Robert Arryn. Petyr Baelish kisses her against her will. Lysa confronts Sansa about trying to steal Littlefinger from her and threatens to push her out of the Moon Door. Baelish intervenes and pushes Lysa out instead. Simon and Mackelly try to pick up the pieces (not of Lysa, that would be nasty).

    Chapter Review:
Sansa Stark wakes early to snow falling. It makes her wistful for Winterfell. She dresses and builds a snow castle, which quickly turns into Winterfell. She’s joined by Petyr Baelish who says she is even more beautiful than her mother was at her age. He kisses her, she yields briefly before pushing him away. Cousin Robert arrives and uses his doll as a giant to smash the walls. Sansa tries to stop him, and his beloved doll is destroyed.

Later she’s summoned to her aunt by the singer Marillion. He’s a favorite of Lysa Arryn, to whom he’s unfailingly pleasant. He uses this as a license to abuse the servants and force himself on the unwilling. They proceed to the great hall. Lysa saw Sansa kiss Baelish, but blames the child. Sansa protests. Lysa compares Sansa to Catelyn - both want to steal away Lysa’s love Petyr. She describes how he deflowered her and the termination of the subsequent pregnancy.

She threatens to push Sansa out of the Moon Door, but is prevented by the timely arrival of Lord Baelish. He talks Lysa down. She reveals that it was she who murdered her husband Jon, with the help of Petyr. He reassures Lysa that he only ever loved one woman. She softens, but then he adds “Only Cat” and pushes her out of the door. He calls for guards to arrest Marillion.

    Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Sansa Stark - Elder daughter of Ned and Catelyn Stark.
Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish - Former member of the Small Council, now lord of Harrenhal and Protector of the Vale.
Lysa Arryn - Lady of the Eyrie. Widow of Jon Arryn, wife of Petyr, and sister to Catelyn.
Robert Arryn - AKA Sweetrobin. Son of Jon and Lysa Arryn. Lord of the Vale. Eight going on three.
Marillion - Singer and favorite of Lysa Arryn.
The Eyrie - Seat of House Arryn in the Vale.
The Moon Door - Door to the outside in the Eyrie. Used for execution of prisoners.

Chapter Sixty-Eight - Sansa 6 - A Storm of Swords | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Chapter Sixty-Eight - Sansa 6 - A Storm of Swords | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Sansa discovers that Littlefinger’s “you’re sailing home” comment is not exactly what she was expecting. She finds herself in a run-down tower on a rocky coast. She gets a new name, attends a wedding, narrowly avoids sexual assault, and has a reunion with a family member. Mackelly and Simon hold their breath, hoping for no deaths at this wedding.

    Chapter Review:
Sansa Stark and Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish arrive at Petyr’s ancestral home in the Fingers. It’s a dismal place but the staff is friendly and happy to see their lord. Petyr informs Sansa that she must take a new name, as it’s not safe to be a Stark at the moment. He names her Alayne, after his mother. She will play his natural-born daughter. He also tells her that he will wed Sansa’s aunt Lysa Arryn, who is on her way to meet them at the tower. Finally, Petyr divulges to Sansa that he was working with Olenna Tyrell to murder King Joffrey. It was Olenna who put the poison in the chalice.

When Lysa arrives, Sansa is introduced as Alayne to her aunt. The couple is wed at once. After the festivities, the singer Marillion, who arrived with Lysa, attempts to have his way sexually with Sansa. His effort is thwarted by Ser Lothor Brune. The next morning Sansa is brought to her aunt, who now knows her true identity. Lysa says she’d never turn away Cat’s daughter. They commiserate over forced marriages, then Lysa says that Sansa will marry her young cousin Robert.

Sansa Stark - Elder daughter of Ned and Catelyn Stark. Forcibly married to Tyrion.

Chapter Two - Catelyn 1 - A Storm of Swords | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Chapter Two - Catelyn 1 - A Storm of Swords | A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF)

Catelyn Stark is confined to her father’s chambers for freeing Jamie Lannister, there she stumbles upon a family secret. Simon and Mackelly muse upon the butterfly effect.

    Chapter Review:
Desmond Grell and Utherydes Wayn have the tricky task of punishing their Lord’s daughter for her treasonous act of freeing Jamie Lannister. She both makes it harder for them (by being entirely unrepentant and refusing to play along with their extenuating circumstance olive branches) and easier for them (by readily agreeing to confinement in her father’s chambers).

Her dying father calls out about “Tansy”, “blood”, “forgiveness”, “You’ll have more sons, and trueborn”. Cat has never heard of Tansy and asking around doesn’t help, as the servants and attendants are on orders not to engage with her beyond what is strictly necessary. After some speculation Cat decides that Hoster is referring to Lysa - and the baby she lost when she was first married to Jon Arryn.

Cat pens a letter to Lysa pleading for her to visit, but doesn’t expect a positive response. Edmure arrives home and reports that Stannis was defeated at King’s Landing with Tyrion injured and expected to die, the Riverlands are free of invaders, and he’s sending ravens to Harrenhal to have Roose Bolton block any possible routes south for Jamie and Brienne. Cat despairs.

    Characters/Places/Names/Events
Catelyn Stark - Eldest child of Hoster Tully, widow of Ned Stark, father of King Robb.
Hoster Tully - Lord of Riverrun and Lord Paramount of the Trident. Dying of old age.
Lysa Arryn - sister to Catelyn Stark, widow of Jon Arryn hiding in the Vale with her son Lord Robert Arryn.
Edmure Tully - brother to Catelyn, heir to Riverrun.
Brynden “Blackfish” Tully - brother of Hoster Tully, uncle to Cat. Renowned soldier.
Brienne of Tarth - former Kingsguard to Renly Baratheon, witness to his murder. Sworn her sword to Catelyn. Currently escorting Jamie Lannister south.
Jamie Lannister - Father and uncle to King Joffrey Baratheon. Twin of Cersei Lannister. Freed from captivity by Catelyn.
Desmond Grell - master-at-arms at Riverrun.
Utherydes Wayn - steward of Lord Hoster Tully
Ser Robin Ryger - captain of the guards at Riverrun. Dispatched to bring Jamie Lannister back.

    Chapter Forty-Two - Tyrion 6 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

    Chapter Forty-Two - Tyrion 6 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

Tyrion and Bronn find themselves in a tough spot. Stuck on the High Road with nothing between them and the dangerous mountain clans. But, like always, Tyrion has a plan. It's no doubt a gamble and their lives are the stakes. Simon and Mac discuss the ins and outs of Tyrion's gambles thus far, contemplate missed opportunities, and conjecture about Tyrion's retribution plans for Lysa Arryn.

    Chapter Review:
Bronn might have won Tyrion Lannister his freedom in the trial by combat but they're both far from safe. Now they're stuck on the High Road with no protection but Bronn's sword and Tyrion's mouth. It's the latter that Tyrion plans on using to save them.

While they rest, Tyrion tells Bronn of the logic behind his gamble with the trial by combat. He also knows that Bronn will sell him out, like he did to Cat, as soon as the right offer is made. Tyrion tells Bronn that he was once married. However, when Tyrion's father Tywin found out, things did not end well.

Eventually, the mountain clansmen find them but before they can kill Bronn and take Tyrion captive, he makes them an offer they can't refuse. All the steel weapons they want from his lord father, and on top of that the Vale of Arryn.

    Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Tyrion Lannister - Youngest son of Tywin Lannister. Brother to queen Cersei and Jamie Lannister.
Catelyn Stark - Lady of Wintefell. Wife of Lord Eddard Stark and daughter of Hoster Tully, the Lord Paramount of the Riverlands.
Lysa Arryn - Cat's younger sister. Widow of Jon Arryn, the former Hand of the King to Robert Baratheon and Lord of the Vale.
Bronn - A sellword who has come along with Tyrion and Cat, since Cat took Tyrion hostage at the Inn at the Crossroads. Cat thinks of him as a very dangerous fighter but with no kindness.
The Vale - Rocky eastern lands of Westeros. Home of House Arryn. The primary seat of power is the Eyrie.
Eyrie - The seat of power of the Arryns. It is located high on a mountain known as the Giant's Lance.

    Chapter Thirty-Eight - Tyrion 5 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

    Chapter Thirty-Eight - Tyrion 5 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

Tyrion is having trouble getting comfortable in his new room in the Eyrie. Mostly it's the lack of a fourth wall, the 600-foot drop just feet away from him, and the rough treatment from the jailer. He takes a big gamble on plan to get himself out, but at least the first part pays off when Bronn volunteers to champion him in a trial by combat.

    Chapter Review:
Tyrion's sarcasm and threats to Lysa Arryn have landed him in a sky cell of the Eyrie. As the days drag on, he's starting to wonder if they're planning on letting him die down there. We learn that Lysa has added the accusation that Tyrion killed Jon Arryn to that of Cat's accusation that he tried to have Bran killed. With nothing but time to think, he wonders if his siblings were actually involved in either the plot to kill Bran or the death of Jon Arryn. He also thinks that possibly a third party could have been involved, as the plots were so very different in sophistication.

When Tyrion realizes he can't last much longer in his cell, due to the cruel treatment from his jailer, he bribes the jailer to tell Lysa he's ready to confess his sins. During his audience with Lysa, Cat, and many of the lords of the Vale, it becomes clear his decision to confess was just a ruse to get in front of a large audience. He requests a trial by combat. For a long minute he thinks he's mad a terrible mistake, until Bronn steps forward to be his champion.

Ser Vardis Egen - The captain of the household guard of House Arryn.
Marillion - Singer who was making his way to King's Landing for the Hand's Tourney before meeting Cat.

    Chapter Thirty-Four - Catelyn 6 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

    Chapter Thirty-Four - Catelyn 6 - A Game of Thrones | A Song of Ice and Fire

Catelyn Stark and her entourage finally arrive, battered and beaten, at the Vale. Cat meets some family. One is a positive reunion. The other not so much. We tell you all about it, give you some insights, and ponder if Rickon might be better suited to look after Robert than Lysa.

    Chapter Review:
Cat and her travel companions make their way through the Vale, from the Bloody Gate to the Gates of the Moon, and then Cat goes sky high to reach the Eyrie. She's accompanied along the way by her uncle Brynden Blackfish Tully. She tells Brynden about everything that has happened since Bran's fall. Brynden tells Cat that the Vale is angry and that her sister Lysa isn't the same girl Cat knew. He also worries that Cat has done the one thing Lysa doesn't want: bring the Lannisters to the Vale.

When the party reaches the Gates of the Moon, Cat is summoned to go the remaining way to the Eyrie alone. When she finally reaches the castle, her sister Lysa seems so happy to see her, that is until the two are alone. As Brynden surmised, Lysa is angry that Cat brought Tyrion here, possibly dragging them into a war with the Lannisters. Cat meets her nephew, little Robert Arryn, who is small, sickly, and surprisingly attached to his mother. As Cat and Lysa argue, Robert asks about making Tyrion fly.

    Characters/Places/Names/Events:
Catelyn Stark - Lady of Wintefell. Wife of Lord Eddard Stark and daughter of Hoster Tully, the Lord Paramount of the Riverlands.
Brynden Blackfish Tully - Cat and Lysa's uncle. Younger brother to their father Lord Hoster Tully. He now serves Lysa as Knight of the Gate.
Tyrion Lannister - Youngest son of Tywin Lannister. Brother to queen Cersei and Jamie Lannister.
Ser Rodrik Cassel - Master-at-arms of Winterfell. Aging knight who has accompanied Cat on her journey to King's Landing.
Marillion - Singer who was making his way to King's Landing for the Hand's Tourney before meeting Cat.
Lysa Arryn - Cat's younger sister. Widow of Jon Arryn, the former Hand of the King to Robert Baratheon and Lord of the Vale.
Nestor Royce -  Keeper of the Gates of the Moon. He has been High Steward of the Vale for the fourteen years, prior to Lord Jon Arryn's death.
