• Segment 3: Mackinac Island only has about 600 residents on the Island each winter season, and one of them is Urvana Tracey Morse, who has lived on the Island since 1990. • Segment 4: Andrew Doud talks about his grocery store, Doud's Market (established in 1884), that stays open for residents all year round. He also talks about the snowmobile culture on the Island during winter time.

• And David Ladd of the Scottville Clown Band stops by the show to give us the history of a band that is celebrating 120 years in 2023. He also talks about where to see them this summer. We recorded the show right at Fort Mackinac on the Island, overlooking the busy harbor. • Then, Jack Swartzinski, an historical interpreter at Fort Mackinac joins us and gives us the real scoop on what it's like to wear the uniform and fire the muskets all summer. Which by the way, isn't all he does by any means.
• Cassandra Boothroyd then stops by. She coordinates group travel and special events and shares the long history of the Boy and Girl Scouts volunteering on the island.
• Finally, MSHP Executive Director Steve Brisson joins us for a few laughs and a few more fun fort facts.

Michilimackinac 1780: Mischief and Mayhem. While in Mackinaw City you walk through Colonial Michilimackinac, where you are stepping back in time to 1780. This isolated British outpost was the scene of paranoia, personal feuds, military mischief, and, from a certain point of view, mutiny. It opens for the 2023 season May 10.

Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park in Mackinaw City is where you can join the Forest Adventure Experience, a guided trek that takes you into, above and through the northern Michigan forest. Scale the five-story Treetop Discovery Tower, taking in bird calls along the way. Brave the Forest Canopy Bridge, high above Mill Creek that explores the under story of the forest. Finally, fly like an eagle down the 425′ Eagle’s Flight Zip Line while spotting fish in the creek. Join trained naturalists for engaging programs showcasing the North Woods, and then take time to explore the natural beauty of Mill Creek State Park, which has more than three miles of groomed hiking trails.Historic Mill Creek Discovery Park will open for the 2023 season May 12.

Over the years there have been more than a few units of the National Park System that have been head-scratchers. Why were they added? What redeeming value did they bring to the park system? 

James Ridenour who was director of the National Park Service from 1989 through 1993, was well familiar with these units. As he once put it, “I’m in complete agreement that the National Park Service has units that are unworthy of National Park Service status. That was my motive for coining the term ‘thinning of the blood’.”

Members of Congress trade votes to get their local favorite on the NPS teat, usually to attract tourists. Then they don’t add money to the budget to run these units. So you have two things - you thin the quality of the system, and you thin the ability of the National Park Service to run the system.

We’re going to explore some of these units, at least some of the ones that were pushed out of the National Park System, with none-other than Traveler Professor Emeritus Dr. Robert Janiskee. Bob was the one who quite some years ago started the “Pruning the Parks” series on the Traveler, and we’ve momentarily  pried him out of his retirement to discuss some of these parks with us.
