    New Orleans' Most Shocking Crimes: Madame LaLaurie

    New Orleans' Most Shocking Crimes: Madame LaLaurie
    Madame LaLaurie holds a horrific place in the history and lore of New Orleans. If ever a house was haunted, it would be the Lalaurie Mansion and it’s attic used for the sole purpose of torturing and murdering enslaved people in the most grotesque ways you could possibly imagine. The wealthy socialite is estimated to have killed between 50 and 100 people.

    Worldly "Progress"

    Worldly "Progress"

    WORDLY PROGRESS

    The book of Ecclesiastes strikes a chord in modern people who are studying the meaning of life. All things “under the sun,” lead to meaninglessness and despair, says the Teacher, if you live a life without God.1

    Ecclesiastes contains reflections of an old man, the “Preacher,” as he considered the question of meaning in life. He looked back and saw the futility (“vanity”) of chasing after even the good things this life can offer, including wisdom, work, pleasure, and wealth.

    Worldly progress is growth in:
    DEVIANCE-departing from the norms
    DEFIANCE-a daring or bold resistance to authority or to any opposing force
    DEPRAVITY-corrupt, wicked, perverted

    Even the prospect of progress is an illusion because of these very things.

    Man is earth’s menace
    Man is earth’s most lethal disease
    Mankind is traitorous to His Creator

    Ecclesiastes 12:13–14
    13 Now all has been heard;
    here is the conclusion of the matter:
    Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind.

    14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.

    Ecclesiastes 1:1–2 (NIV)Everything Is Meaningless

    1 The words of the Teacher,  son of David, king in Jerusalem:
    2 “Meaningless! Meaningless!” says the Teacher. “Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless.”

    Ecclesiastes 1:8–11 (NIV)8 All things are wearisome, more than one can say. The eye never has enough of seeing, nor the ear its fill of hearing.

    9 What has been will be again, what has been done will be done again; there is nothing new under the sun.

    10 Is there anything of which one can say, “Look! This is something new”? It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time.

    11 No one remembers the former generations, and even those yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow them.
    Ecclesiastes 1:12–18 (NIV)

    Wisdom Is Meaningless

    12 I, the Teacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem. 13 I applied my mind to study and to explore by wisdom all that is done under the heavens. What a heavy burden God has laid on mankind! 14 I have seen all the things that are done under the sun; all of them are meaningless, a chasing after the wind.

    15 What is crooked cannot be straightened;

    what is lacking cannot be counted.

    16 I said to myself, “Look, I have increased in wisdom more than anyone who has ruled over Jerusalem before me; I have experienced much of wisdom and knowledge.” 17 Then I applied myself to the understanding of wisdom, and also of madness and folly, but I learned that this, too, is a chasing after the wind.

    18 For with much wisdom comes much sorrow;

    the more knowledge, the more grief.

    Ecclesiastes 2:12–16 (NIV)

    Wisdom and Folly Are Meaningless

    12 Then I turned my thoughts to consider wisdom,

    and also madness and folly.

    What more can the king’s successor do

    than what has already been done?

    13 I saw that wisdom is better than folly,

    just as light is better than darkness.

    14 The wise have eyes in their heads,

    while the fool walks in the darkness;

    but I came to realize

    that the same fate overtakes them both.

    15 Then I said to myself,

    “The fate of the fool will overtake me also.

    What then do I gain by being wise?”

    I said to myself,

    “This too is meaningless.”

    16 For the wise, like the fool, will not be long remembered;

    the days have already come when both have been forgotten.

    Like the fool, the wise too must die!
