    Mike Nicholls

    Mike Nicholls

As we wind down this year’s Black History Month (and our anniversary month — 11 years!), we’ve got a super-sized episode with someone I’ve wanted to have on the podcast for a long time — the one and only Mike Nicholls. Mike is an award-winning storyteller with deep roots in hip-hop culture and design, and is probably most well-known for creating Umber — the design and culture magazine that highlights the global perspectives of Black people and POC from around the world.

Mike talked about how his love for magazines inspired him to create Umber, and shared some of the triumphs and challenges he’s faced over the years as the brand has evolved from a magazine into a media platform. He also spoke about his time as a designer in Atlanta, Philly, and Chicago, how Oakland inspires his work, and talked about how being a designer and a hip-hop artist helps keep his artistic integrity intact.

For Mike, his creative expression is about more than just making ends meet — it’s about creating with a purpose and about telling stories that resonate on a deeper level and embrace the authenticity of Black and brown experiences!

    Bea Feitler

    Bea Feitler

Bea Feitler was a graphic designer, art director, educator, and a mentor to young professionals. Originally from Brazil, Feitler eventually found her home in New York City and made a name for herself in the magazine industry. Early on in her career she was named co-art director of Harper’s Bazaar along with Ruth Ansel—both having served as graphic designers under art director Marvin Israel (1924–85) who had been one of Feitler’s instructors at Parsons. Known for taking chances, Feitler and Ansel pushed Harper’s to its limits. Under Feitler’s and Ansel’s direction, Harper’s became one of the first national publications to photograph and feature an African American model. After leaving Harper’s, Feitler got involved with Ms., a liberal feminist publication founded by Gloria Steinem and Dorothy Pitman Hughes. At Ms. Magazine, Feitler was responsible for many controversial covers including one for a December (Christmas) issue, which featured the slogan “Peace on Earth, Good Will toward People”, revising the historically patriarchal statement “Peace on Earth, Good Will toward Men.” Despite a relatively short career, due to her untimely death at age 44, she made a significant impact on magazine design while also taking a stand for feminism and equality.

    Gestalten.tv (HD) - Richard Turley

From Bitcoin Dreams and a surprisingly sophisticated Twitter bird to a hedge fund boner, we were always fascinated by Richard Turley’s radical cover designs for Bloomberg Businessweek over the past four years. In April 2014, In April 2014, news broke that he was bidding farewell to the magazine’s newsroom and moving on to MTV.

When Richard Turley joined the magazine in 2010, his mission was nothing less than to reinvent it. In this video, possibly his last interview as Creative Director of Bloomberg Businessweek, Gestalten.tv captures some of his greatest work and the thinking behind the design of the publication. He talks about how he and his team translate the complex, button-down, data-driven world of business, politics, and economics into an endlessly surprising visual package of bold provocative designs—spurring the imagination and mood of the nation every week. We give our heartfelt thanks to Turley for having made business matters so visually interesting.
