    22. The Beauty of Being in Relationship With Yourself

    22. The Beauty of Being in Relationship With Yourself

I often talk about being in better relationship with yourself and your creative work, but what does that even mean? In this week's episode, I'm breaking down the 'self' part of the being-in-better-relationship-with-yourself-and-your-art equation.

    This episode covers:

    • The two voices that live inside your head
    • Why your instinctive and intentional selves are never a problem
    • How your ego mediates between your instinctive and intentional selves
    • The way that shame fosters an insecure ego and an unhealthy relationship with yourself
    • Why learning to be in better loving relationship with yourself is a practice and a skill

TSG #26: Theo Zgraggen on Living Your Art, Healing Through Art and Making Art Your Gift

TSG #26: Theo Zgraggen on Living Your Art, Healing Through Art and Making Art Your Gift

Theo Zgraggen is an artist and coach who looks at all of life as a work of art.  I found his profile randomly on Instagram a little while back, and was immediately captivated by his message and conscious approach towards creativity.  We share very similar worldviews as artists and humans - Theo feels like a long lost brother who is on the same mission as me: to help as many people as possible find their authentic voice and feel safe to share it with the world.

What I admire most about Theo is the palpable way he embodies his missions as an artist.  As you'll hear and feel in this conversation, Theo truly is "living his art" (the name of his coaching business) in each moment, from the way he thinks deeply about questions, talks about his story, and shares his work with the world.  He even helped me to challenge some of my own assumptions around art and creativity and I left this conversation feeling refreshed and inspired about my art and service.

This is definitely one of my favorite conversations on the show so far - if you're an artist (which is all of you listening out there ; )), you definitely don't want to miss this one.

Create regardless — with video artist Heb on the Web

Create regardless — with video artist Heb on the Web

How do you stay true to your instincts and commit to doing what brings you joy — in a world where virility and follower gains are king?

Heather Chelan, more popularly known as Heb on the Web, knows first hand how addictive and influential the viral content drug can be. The fun, the fame, and the fear of it all never happening again has led many influencers and businesses down a dark and lonely path. Most of us have had the experience at some point ourselves, even if on a much smaller scale. It feels good to be liked, and feels not-so-good when we aren’t getting the love we crave.

While we have a lot of fun talking about taco costumes, dresses with pockets, the cost of an oat milk latte, and professional colorful hair, Heb also speaks honestly about her social experience, and what she’s done to create from her own heart. We also dip into our own achiever syndrome, discuss the mindset that has helped us break free of the limits an addiction to praise can set on us, and why we should create regardless.

A wonderful quote she shared in the episode that is keeping her moving forward in a grounded way is:

“You can never connect the dots moving forward but you can always connect them looking backward.”

After listening to this episode, journal on these questions:

    • How can I better connect with myself today? What do I need right now?
    • Am I surrounding myself with people who are helping me let out my inner weirdo? Who are the people in my life who allow it to come out and play?
    • What are some moments in my day where I can embrace boredom?

    just start the damn project

    just start the damn project

Just start the damn project! Enjoy some conversation and some playful ranting around why we struggle to just get started. Your project might be simply getting in shape (and sometimes there's nothing simple about it!). Maybe you're looking to write a book, or have a baby, or meet new friends, or become more outspoken, or heal chronic illness, or fall in love (with yourself? with your life?).

All these desires qualify as a "project" and the directive to "just start" applies to all.

And here in Season 2 of Dirt Road Less Travelled, Maia will not only be joined by exciting and outspoken guests, people who have committed to just starting their damn projects, but we'll be hanging out in a nifty little "Grammar Corner" in many shows (no promises that this brand spankin' new element will be in all episodes, but maybe!), and a general sense of fun & freshness. Make sure you listen all the way to the end of this episode for some nuttiness & grammar joy!

Pianists geeks: jealousy, love for music, art and the beauty of life: Kamilė Zaveckaitė

A very homey conversation with my dear friend, pianist and roommate Kamilė Zaveckaitė. At the moment we both live and study music in Vienna. We talk about our very private feelings as jealousy, comparison and how do we feel in the classical music industry. Kamilė has listened to all of my episodes and we discuss ideas from the previous episodes. Join us! With an exception of my and Kamile's performance of Lutoslawski's  Variations on a Theme by Paganini for Two Pianos, you will hear music performed by Ukrainian musicians.

This is a homage to all Ukrainian people, who have been suffering since Russia's invasion. Make Art not War.

    1. Intro: Dmytro Gnativ - Ukrainian composer's Vitaly Hubarenko concerto for flute
    2. Mariia Kurhuzova - Ligeti Etude No. 4 "Fanfares"

Want to design jewelry? All you have to do is learn science, create art, and make a living. How hard can it be?

Want to design jewelry? All you have to do is learn science, create art, and make a living. How hard can it be?

Mark describes designing and making jewelry as “playing with fire and smacking the shit out of metal”. Turns out it’s a little more complicated than that.

Charbroiled Chats won't change your life but it might make your day.

Good friends talking about everything in general and nothing in particular. Occasionally thoughtful, often silly and mostly inconsequential.

The cast of Charbroiled Chats includes novelists, journalists, marketers, artists, IT specialists, copywriters, editors, photographers, painters and a sewist. Which is odd because there are only three of them. It’s hard to sort out who does what but if you’re still curious, this probably won’t help:

GRACE is a foodie who hates to cook, a Japanophile who has never been to Japan, a movie and music fan who denigrates Hollywood rom-coms and jazz, and a lover of celebrity gossip who doesn’t give a rat’s ass about celebrities.

MARK FARRELL “The Jeweler” is anything but normal, though he is hopelessly average in every way that matters in school. Good thing none of that shit matters, because he’s out to change the world through his art. He talks too much and has too much information on things that most people don’t care to think or know about. To put it plainly, he is “Just a guy that never tried, I’m just a stupid fuck with brilliant luck and sometimes a bright idea.” - from “Hangman” by Motion City Soundtrack.

WALLY once landed a plane on the wrong runway of an international airport. He likes dogs, hates front-wheel-drive, wishes there was less music. He lived in Japan for nine hours.

54: PART 2 - Accomplishing everything in a creative career

Helena returns after being on episode 32 on how to pursue multiple interests with a creative career. Her original concern was that if she pursued one interest, all the rest of the creative dreams would fall behind. She said that my advice about seeing all the pursuits as part of a whole — where each feeds into each other instead of each being separate —helped her calm down, accept where she was, and feel stronger by knowing what she could control.
