    214 - Singer-Songwriter, Nick Norman

    214 - Singer-Songwriter, Nick Norman

In this episode, Mark Baratto sits down with Key West local Nick Norman to talk about where he started, and where he is going in this previous episode REBOOT.

We find out how he got started with music and how he is constantly working to "sharpen the sword" of his craft.

This is one of my favorite interviews so far because Nick is so easy to talk to and talks about his career as an open book.

    More on Nick Norman

A show-stopping vocalist and sharp songwriter, Nick Norman brings humor, heart, southern storytelling, and soulful swagger to the country genre. It's a sound that began taking shape in his hometown of Columbia, South Carolina, where Nick grew up listening to a soundtrack of home-state heroes — including Edwin McCain and Hootie & the Blowfish — and icons like Stevie Wonder and The Band. He soaked it all up, mixing the rootsy sounds of the FM dial with the awe-inspiring power of the gospel singers he'd hear every Sunday morning at the local church.

A lifelong friend and collaborator of country star Lee Brice, Nick began recording songs as a teenager, working inside a makeshift studio that he constructed with Lee in the pump house of a local church camp. He later moved south to Key West, where he established himself as one of the area's strongest draws. Even so, it was his newest album that brought him back to Nashville, where Nick recorded a batch of raw, rootsy songs — including several tracks co-written with his childhood friend, Lee — in Zac Brown's Southern Ground Studio. Produced by Lee Brice, Rob Hatch, and Elisha Hoffman, Nick Norman isn't just Nick's strongest effort to date; it's also the first release on Pump House Records.

213 - An Interview with singer Jared Watson of the Dirty Heads

213 - An Interview with singer Jared Watson of the Dirty Heads

In this exclusive interview reboot, Mark Baratto sits down with Rapper and Singer of the Dirty Heads, Jared Watson (aka Dirty J).

This interview happened 30 minutes before the band went on stage for the beginning of their national tour, down here at the Key West Amphitheater.

It may have been short, but for those fans out there, we touched on the bands origin story and their beginnings.

    More on the Dirty Heads

Following in the footsteps of their California brothers Sublime, Huntington Beach’s Dirty Heads mix hip-hop, reggae, and rock along with that laid-back South Cali attitude. The group formed in 2003 when punk rocker Dustin Bushnell (aka Duddy B) asked his friend, rapper Jared Watson (aka Dirty J), to collaborate on a project that would focus on positive vibes and infectious grooves. Watson added singing to his vocal skills, and with percussionist Jon Olazabal, an acoustic trio version of Dirty Heads began playing shows and building an audience.

They soon hooked up with producer Rob Cavallo and headed into the studio to record their debut album for Warner Bros., but differences with the label had them looking for other opportunities. Still, the band was able to retain most of its work, including sessions with drummer Josh Freese, along with the late-Beatles collaborator Billy Preston in one of the keyboardist’s last recordings. The finished album, Any Port in a Storm, would arrive in 2008, with a deluxe edition following in 2010. The deluxe version featured the track “Lay Me Down” with special guest Rome Ramirez of Sublime with Rome. The song would top Billboard’s Alternative Songs chart just before the summer of 2010.

They followed up two years later with Cabin by the Sea and later recorded an acoustic version of the title track. This, in turn, led to an entire acoustic album in 2013 called Home: Phantoms of Summer. Dirty Heads’ next album, Sound of Change, would prove to be a breakthrough for the now-veteran band, debuting at number eight on the Billboard Top 200 while topping the Independent and Alternative Albums charts upon its May 2014 release.

Building on their renewed success, Dirty Heads enlisted a bevy of industry hitmakers to work on their self-titled 2016 follow-up, which — thanks to its mainstream appeal — again charted high on the Billboard Top 200. The following year saw the band drop its sixth studio album, Swim Team, featuring the singles “Vacation” and “Staloney.” Also included on the album was the track “So Glad You Made It,” featuring 311’s Nick Hexum. The single “Listen to Me” arrived in early 2019 and was later included on Dirty Heads’ Dave Cobb-produced seventh album Super Moon. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi

212 - Key West First Legal Rum Distillery with Paul Menta

In this episode of the podcast, Mark Baratto sits down with the Kiteboarder, Chef, and owner/creator of the Key West First Legal Rum Distillery, Paul Menta.

We talk about how Paul took a number of chances when creating his rum distillery and how his "failures" help him find success.

In a post-COVID-19 world, Paul saw how hand sanitizer was hard to come by, so made his own product mixing 140 proof alcohol with aloe and transmission gel, used in ultrasounds.

Menta gave away the 3-oz bottles around town to service workers, retailers, mail carriers, and anyone else hard at work in Key West during high season for tourists.

Key West First Legal Rum Distillery

    WHAT IS CHEF DISTILLED?

For centuries, Distillers have been making the sweet libation...Rum.  Some legal, some not so legal.

One common task shared by rum Distillers and Chefs alike is cooking sugar cane in big kettles or "stills." We are Chefs first and Distillers second, so our process is called Chef Distilled!

This combination of skill brings out the best flavors in our original white rums, made with Florida sugar cane and with infusions of Coconut, Vanilla Creme Brulee, and Real Key Lime. Our 6 times distilled specialty rums are sure to twist your taste buds on an adventure!

We are still "Chefs," so we jar rum cakes, fresh fruits, and savory vegetables. Why is our craft different, you ask?  Because homemade has no preservatives!

#205 - Better Than Sex, a Dessert Restaurant (Part 2)

#205 - Better Than Sex, a Dessert Restaurant (Part 2)

In this episode, Mark Baratto sits down with Len Johnson, the co-owner of Better Than Sex - A Dessert Restaurant, to talk about what has been happing in their restaurant after being opened for 15 years!

We talk about new locations, new menu items, and how Len and Dani keep their staff loving where they work!

To listen to our first episode, CLICK HERE.

More on Better Than Sex - A Dessert Restaurant

Our dream began in 2003. As newlyweds, I was eager to make my husbands every desire a reality, so when he exclaimed to me “I want dessert!”, I wanted to impress!

Four hours later after patiently waiting, a fully decorated two-layer Oreo Cookie Cake appeared. Len was a happy hubby.  He proclaimed it ‘amazingly delicious’ and said: “wow if you can do this, what else can you do?”   I am not one for letting go of a challenge and really wanted to “show him” what I could do! Then began the odyssey that leads us to today.

My love of baking stemmed from fond memories in my Italian family’s kitchen alongside my mom. So, I continued and began teaching myself how to bake.  I collected all of my recipes, saved receipts, and took photos of everything I made. Something guided me to do this without reason for several years.  Our concept for BTS had not formed yet. I would bring my creations to work and test them out on friends and co-workers.  They would often exclaim “you should do this for a living.”  Len and I secretly agreed.

When Len said to me ‘write a menu’ and “I’ll write the business plan,” challenge #2 was accepted.  We knew we wanted to create an after-dinner experience, an extension of an evening in a romantic and sophisticated sexy atmosphere.  And so, it begins….

In 2006 we threw a Valentine’s Day Dessert party at our house and invited a few unsuspecting friends. Some of the dessert items we have on the menu today were tested on them. Our idea to open a dessert-only restaurant was officially validated that night.

We put our twisted minds together and had an incredibly fun time creating what is now Better Than Sex - A Dessert Restaurant.

On May 20, 2008, we officially opened at our original location, 411 Petronia Street to a full house!

We always believed in our idea and ourselves, however, the road after was a bit more challenging. The first reviews were less than positive and at one point we only had a few thousand dollars to our names. We Never Quit!

Then in 2010 Better Than Sex was featured on the Travel Channel and the rest is history. By 2012 the little location on Petronia Street was standing room only.  We needed a bigger restaurant. It was decided to pick up and move to the current Key West location. Our last night at the Petronia location featured our team and guests picking up their tables and chairs and walking them down the block and setting them up in the new space.

On December 26th, 2015 we opened our Orlando location.  Len and I met over 20 years ago waiting tables in Orlando and it seemed like a perfect fit for our second spot. Orlando opened its doors to a packed house and has been successful since.

Coming full circle, on Valentines’ Day of 2016 we were blessed to have been featured on CBS Sunday Morning. As you can see, Valentine’s Day is significant to BTS.  “We valentine, all the time.”

We are passionate about what we do and now want to share that opportunity with other like-minded people. We are currently offering our concept to franchise nationwide.

And to think, this was all born from an Oreo Cookie Layer Cake.

Back in 2003, as husband and wife, we made a promise to ourselves….“Lists do work, agreements work, if you believe it, have a partner that can hold you accountable, you can and will make it happen.”  We always will!

#203 - Musician Howard Livingston is "Livin' on Key West Time"

In this episode, Mark Baratto sits down with singer-songwriter, Howard Livingston.

We talk about how he started his career as a musician and how he is a successful musician with no agent or record label.

    More on Howard Livingston

Howie actually did what many folks dream of doing: he gave up the workaday world, moved to the Florida Keys, and became a musician. He is a native of the mountains of eastern Kentucky and moved to Indiana at age 13. Howie learned the guitar in his youth and played in a band as a teenager. After high school, he moved to Chicago, studied engineering, and launched a business manufacturing parts for diesel engines.

Twenty years later he traveled to the Florida Keys, where he developed a severe case of “Keys Fever”, he never wanted to leave. The more he visited, the more music and the Florida Keys called out to him. Finally, he surrendered. The islands called both him and his guitar. He moved to the tiny sun-soaked island of Summerland Key, 24 miles from Key West, where he teamed up with a group of talented musicians and The Mile Marker 24 Band was born. Howie has been the recipient of ten Trop Rock Music Association’s awards, including Trop Rock Entertainer of The Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year and Band of the Year. He has been featured on The Today Show, Good Morning America, The Early Show, The Travel Channel, and The Weather Channel. In 2020 Howie was a guest on Samantha Brown’s Places To Love and four of his songs were used in the episode. Howie’s song The Vandenberg was featured on PBS’s “Changing Seas” program. His song “Living On An Island” was the theme song for the Discovery Network’s “Buying The Beach” series, and Howie and his wife Cyndy starred in the first episode. In addition, Howie hosted the DirectTV series “Key West Time.” The show focused on lifestyles and recreation in the Florida Keys and went out to 16 million households worldwide.

The Florida Keys has a yearly public voting program for the “Best Of”. Howie is a 7-time winner of this award.. Howie and Cyndy focus on many charities but their most loved is Care Camps, a nonprofit organization that sends kids with cancer and their siblings to specialized summer camps. Howie and Cyndy along with his “Friend Club,” the Southernmost Coconut Castaways have raised over $1,000,000 for these wonderful children.

    More on Tucker's Provisions

Born from a time when people shopped for quality, Tucker’s Provisions collects together objects and apparel that stand the test of time. If you like a classic way of dressing, an aesthetic that harks back to the days of cocktails and dancing on the weekends, sturdy items for everyday use and finding everything you need under one roof, Tucker’s Provisions will feel like coming home.

The Key West Insider’s Guide describes how Tucker’s Provision represents the spirit of classic Key West: “In the 1940s, what’s considered “Old Town” now was Key West. The scarcity of paved roads meant little, as few people owned cars. To get around, they walked, or they rode bicycles with no locks. They spent hours porch-sitting, kept chickens, caught fish, and harvested conch. On weekends, men in dinner jackets and women in pearls drank cocktails, smoked cigarettes and danced at the Cuban Club, while Tennessee Williams roomed at the La Concha hotel, finishing A Streetcar Named Desire. Across Fleming Street, the S.H. Kress & Co earned more than any other five-and-dime store in the country. Out of this confident Post World War II Key West, Tucker’s Provisions rose. Today, it’s where a wardrobe is still well-made, low-maintenance, and not about the labels. It’s where to find the perfect flask, comfortable canvas shoes, and wristwatch to rely on. Part general, part dry goods store, Tucker’s Provisions provides for fishing outings, beach days with family, first dates, and 50th anniversaries. It recalls a time when handshakes meant agreement, and all a person needed was the one place that seemed to have everything.”

Tucker’s Provision is further hailed in The Key West Citizen as: “In short, neither people nor their planet were harmed in the production of the clothes and other products that line the walls and fill the shelves at Tucker’s Provisions, a store reminiscent of a different era in a different town – before frozen drinks and four-day cruises descend on Duval street.”

    More on Amigos Tortilla Bar

AMIGOS is bringing it back to basics. Traditional Mexican street tacos are a humble but flavorful affair – seasoned meats and fresh seafood on handmade corn tortillas topped with combinations of freshly diced onions, chopped cilantro, pico de gallo and tasty salsas. You can’t beat fresh!

    What's a Square Taco?

We developed a tortilla machine that cuts the dough into our signature SQUARE shape. It’s not a gimmick – it's functional. A folded square tortilla holds more filling with less spilling! Our tortillas are made with traditional ingredients – 100% fresh ground corn and water. That’s it. And if you prefer Gringo-style hard shell tacos, no problemo!

Great Mexican food in the heart of Key West. Welcome to AMIGOS!
