More on Zen by Karen Moore

Nature surrounds in the Florida Keys - where the sun, breezes, shifting skies, and turquoise water combine into something like a second skin. Life is saltier and brighter in this part of the world. You feel more intuitive and vibrant here. It's a way of being that infuses ZEN by Karen Moore jewelry. Zen is what you see and experience in each piece. ZEN by Karen Moore jewelry settles the soul, like warm sand on bare feet.

Karen Moore creates her jewelry pieces by hand, inspired by her life on the ocean and her travels. Her jewelry works alone or in layers, depending on the weather of your mood. It tells a story in gemstones, whether a speck of Amazonite on a suede cord that adorned your neck the day you needed a bit of good luck; the chunks of Labradorite anchoring a ZEN Wrap® Necklace chosen for its transformative power the day you started a new job; or a mala bracelet strung with conch shells and freshwater pearls worn to feel close to the ocean. Formed deep in the earth’s layers, in volcanoes, and by the tides, gemstones hold concentrated energy and beauty that magnify when worn on the body. Try on. Tune in. Find your ZEN.

    KAREN'S STORY

From Corporate to The Conch Republic

Born and raised in Buffalo, New York, Karen Moore felt a connection to nature as far back as she can remember. The first phase of her professional life took place in the corporate world, where she worked in software and accounting and traveled frequently. She lived many places, including Spain and the Florida Keys (where she met her future husband, Clint). Karen savored the landscapes of wherever she landed - be it the sun sinking down behind a rugged mountain line, lush green trees swaying in the breeze, or the fluid ebb and flow of the coastline. In quite the same way, she found herself irresistibly drawn to gemstones, collecting strings of beads from various markets, without a full sense of why.

The first piece of jewelry she made, a prototype of her signature ZEN Wrap, was inspired by a necklace she inherited from a beloved aunt. In 2008, work landed her in Arizona, where her connection to nature resonated. She attended her first Tucson Gem Show, meeting suppliers she has maintained to this day.

Karen’s first trunk shows took place in windowless conference rooms, where she sold to coworkers and word-of-mouth clients attracted to her creations. Soon, this work became her “real job,” and she and her husband moved back to the Florida Keys to live in the sun and salty air. Now, the way Karen lives is inextricable from work, whether it’s living with positive intentions, free diving in the shallows of Florida Bay, working with aromatherapy, or making smoothies from local mangoes. The balance in her jewelry reflects the balance in the way she lives.

An inspiring journey through beautiful, serene villages of the Turkish countryside truly moved me to share my passion for artisan Turkish Towels with you! On my trip the selfless and humble people left a lasting impression. The incredibly refreshing warmth and care experienced while meeting with families of weavers during my road trip mirror the craft of the pieces exactly. It was amazing to see the talent within those skilled, loving hands – the authenticity is unmatched!

It was easy to fall in love with such soft and rich towels. They are made with Aegean cotton/linen blend and an intricate hand weaving process solidify the design. Their premium quality showcases itself in absorbency, durability, and versatility. Graced with Mediterranean motifs and colors, you feel transported to a calm, airy place.

With roots in Turkey myself, the style is innate and speaks to the culture of the land. Lovingly, I gift you with the Pera Company- offers a collection that encapsulates the simplicity, light, and uniqueness of the Turkish experience.

A deep appreciation goes to my beloved friend Madeleine Hugo who started me on this journey.

The Ed Scales Radio Show with Judge Ed Scales, III

The Ed Scales Radio Show with Judge Ed Scales, III

In the episode, Mark Baratto sits down with Judge Edwin A. Scales, III to the Third District Court of Appeal, who also happens to be a DJ on local station 104.1.

We talk about his love for music and how he never gave up on his dream, while still being a local District Court Judge.

    More on Ed Scales, III

Ed’s show—oddly named “The Ed Scales Show”—airs on US-1 Radio most Sundays from 11am-2pm. The show has aired on US-1 Radio for over two decades and continues the station’s tradition of nontraditional radio, Florida Keys-style. No one (other than Bill Becker) has been on-the-air at US-1 Radio longer. Management of the station is as puzzled as everyone else as to why this is the case. No matter how often we change the locks to keep Ed out, Ed finds a way into the studio to do his show. Trust us, if it weren’t for his impeccable musical taste, we’d call the cops!

While it’s hard to describe Ed’s show with any particularity, suffice to say that he plays a wide variety of great rock and roll. Ed regularly sneaks down into the US-1 Radio music vault to play stuff you just don’t hear every day, and he also mixes in the hits so that there’s truly “something for everyone”. He even peppers the show with entertaining features like “Ed’s Peeve of the Week” and “This Date in Rock and Roll History”. So, tune in on Sundays for “The Ed Scales Show”…..and give us a shout if you know a good locksmith.

Now on to the Judge part...

On October 18, 2013 Governor Rick Scott appointed Judge Edwin A. Scales, III to the Third District Court of Appeal, making him the first Monroe County attorney ever appointed to the Court.

Before his appointment, Judge Scales was a sole practitioner in Key West, Florida. His practice concentrated in the areas of appellate litigation, commercial and real estate litigation, administrative law, and mediation. Additionally, through his “of-counsel” affiliation with the GrayRobinson law firm, Judge Scales served as the General Counsel to the Florida Citrus Commission.

Prior to moving to Key West, Judge Scales was a shareholder in the Lakeland, Florida law firm of Lane, Trohn, Bertrand, & Vreeland, P.A. In 1998, Judge Scales became the General Counsel for Historic Tours of America, Inc., a national site-seeing company with headquarters in Key West, Florida.

From 2011 thru 2013, Judge Scales served on the Florida Commission on Ethics and was its vice chairman. In 2005, Monroe County's attorneys elected Judge Scales to serve on the Florida Bar's Board of Governors, and he was re-elected to that position four times. He served on the Bar’s Executive Committee for three years and chaired both the Bar’s Legislation Committee and Citizen’s Forum.

In 2006, Judge Scales was appointed by Florida Governor Jeb Bush to the Board of Trustees of the Florida Keys Community College. He was reappointed to the Board by Governors Crist and Scott. He chaired the Board from 2007 to 2009, and again in 2011 and 2012.

From 2000 to 2005, Judge Scales served on the Federal Judicial Nominating Commission for Florida's Southern District. In 2009, he was appointed by Governor Charlie Crist to the Judicial Nominating Commission for Florida's 16th Judicial Circuit, and was reappointed to the JNC by Gov. Rick Scott in 2012.

In 2001, he was elected to serve a four-year term on the Key West City Commission, and in 2003 was appointed to the Florida Keys Tourist Development Council, where he served two years as Treasurer.
Since 1999, Judge Scales has hosted the weekly "Ed Scales Show" heard on Keys radio station US-1 (104.1 FM - www.us1radio.com). He has an extensive background in both radio and television, hosting "The Legal Beagles" radio program in the Tampa Bay area from 1996 to 1998.

Since joining the Court, Judge Scales has been appointed by the Florida Supreme Court to represent Florida’s judiciary on the Florida Bar Foundation Board of Directors, where he chairs the Foundation’s Audit Committee. Chief Justice Charles Canady appointed Judge Scales to serve on Florida’s Judicial Management Council, the long-range planning committee for Florida’s judicial branch of government. Judge Scales also served on the Board of Directors of the University of Florida Alumni Association, taught the complex civil litigation courses at Florida’s College for Advanced Judicial Studies, has taught courses as part of the faculty of the National Judicial College, and regularly presents continuing legal education seminars to local bar associations.

Judge Scales was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and was raised in Lakeland, Florida. He received his B.S. in Telecommunications with Honors from the University of Florida in 1988. While an undergraduate at the University of Florida, he was appointed by Governor Bob Martinez to serve on the Florida Board of Regents from 1987 to 1988, and was tapped into the Florida Blue Key leadership honorary. He also served as the "mike man" for the Florida Gators and is a 2-year UF Varsity Letterman. In 1988, he was named the University of Florida's outstanding male graduate and was named to the University of Florida Hall of Fame. In 1991 he received his J.D. from the University of Florida College of Law. While in law school, Judge Scales served as President of the University of Florida Student Body, he received the Bill Fleming Memorial Award for outstanding service to the University of Florida community, and he received the Book Award for Florida Administrative Law demonstrating academic excellence in that area.

    Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Bespokefloraldesignllc/

Bespoke Florida Design is the brainchild of Key West Native Natalie McIntyre and is a true culmination of her lifelong love affair with pretty things. McIntyre spent her childhood roaming the streets of Key West picking and plundering plumerias, gardenias, and any array of local foliage she could get her hands on (with permission of course). When she wasn’t busy hoarding blooms and making flower crowns, she could be found skimming the sea shore for sea glass and other treasures that she would later sell to visitors.

Bespoke Floral Design is the next chapter for the already accomplished florist and designer. The blonde and bougie beauty started at age 16 working at a floral shop in old town on Lazy Lane. It was there she cultivated and harnessed her never ending love for petals and blooms. She quickly discovered she had a knack and love for pruning and manipulating stems. McIntyre would eventually go on to help curate and plan hundreds of weddings for those in love as a premier wedding planner. Although she thrived as a planner, she could see there was niche missing in the floral market. She stayed close to her roots and found herself pawning to be back in the creative saddle. Within years, McIntyre would go on to open her own flower shop on Truman Avenue. There she operated as an in-house florist catering to an elite line up of clients. She created elaborate one-of-a kind floral bouquets for soon to be brides and delivered the freshest stems to deserving recipients. While operating and doing what she loved, McIntyre met her future husband. The two would eventually go on to get married and start a budding family of their own.

Today, the mother of three brings her love of all things luxurious and opulent to the very bouquets her fingers touch. Each arrangement is sculpted and trimmed to perfection courtesy of McIntyres eye for design and love for the craft. Her attention to detail is almost an obsession that guarantees the perfect arrangement.

As purveyor of fine things ,this luxury design connoisseur has created an aesthetically appealing and captivating space. Moss and ferns cover the walls while anthuriums sit pretty in the window begging for you to buy them. Located at the top of Clinton Square market in Old Town Key West, Bespoke Floral Design is a way to keep you getting and wanting more. Bespoke floral arrangements are created with your budget in mind while offering complimentary delivery in Key West.

Bespoke Floral Design houses a lush and tropical collection of foliage. Roses, Orchids, Calla Lilies, and birds of paradise line the freezer shelves waiting to be picked and pruned. The space showcases a variety of speciality and one of a kind items from fine jewelry to exclusive hand-pour candles that can only be found at Bespoke Floral Design. The Grateful Diver

    The Grateful Diver

In this episode, Mark Baratto sits down with Coley Faircloth to talk about his lifestyle brand with a mission to help the ocean reefs.

    More on The Grateful Diver

Grateful Diver was created in 1995 when Grateful Dead co-founder and drummer Bill Kruetzmann, an avid diver, had the inspiration to design a Grateful Diver logo by placing the iconic Grateful Dead lightning bolt on a red dive flag. Kruetzmann then granted Coral Forest, a nonprofit coral reef conservation organization, the rights to use it for marine conservation fundraising initiatives. Bob Weir, Grateful Dead co-founder and rhythm guitarist was a member of the Coral Forest board of directors.

In 1998, Coral Forest merged with Reef Relief (reefrelief.org), a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving and protecting the coral reef ecosystem through education and outreach in the Florida Keys. Permission to use the Grateful Diver logo was then passed on to them. Over the years, Grateful Diver merchandise has been sold online and used in many events and fundraisers to generate revenue to assist in Reef Relief’s conservation efforts. The retail items that have proudly displayed the Grateful Diver flag have connected ocean lovers, dive enthusiasts and outdoorsmen from around the globe while raising thousands of dollars to help protect coral reefs, a vital part of our ecosystem.

In the fall of 2020, Grateful Diver began the process of transitioning into a community driven by conservation by expanding the apparel and gear selection to generate more revenue for Reef Relief and the many conservation initiatives that so desperately need it. Grateful Diver’s core mission is to preserve and protect our vulnerable environmental resources by bringing together determined, passionate, outdoor enthusiasts who share a deep value and appreciation for the natural world. With your help, Grateful Diver and Reef Relief can make giant strides to help educate individuals about the importance of environmental conservation and to help preserve the environment around us, now and for future generations. Be a Grateful Diver!

More on the COAST is Clear Music & Arts Festival

In a time of global unrest and uncertainty, it’s often best to take a step back to find respite in the simple pleasures of life.

A weekend in the sun surrounded by close compadres — or simply folks you’ve only just met because of a shared love of music and art — can, at the very least, provide a temporary feeling that things might just be okay when whatever it is that we’ve all collectively endured is finally behind us.

And, at its core, that’s what COAST Is Clear is really all about.

From the start, it has been a time and place to celebrate the end of a difficult stretch — for us, it’s that six-month period we in the tropics call Hurricane Season, that officially ends each year on December 1 — when, quite literally, the “coast is clear”.

We started this festival in 2017, just months after Hurricane Irma ravaged the Lower Keys. That year, a few musician friends of ours agreed to come down to lend a hand and lift spirits by doing what they do best. And since then, we’ve committed to bringing down top-notch, nationally-acclaimed bands, paired with local art to make COAST Is Clear an annual festival — one that has been enjoyed equally by our local friends and traveling fans alike.

This year, for the first time, we are so excited to announce that the festival will be a collaborative effort between one of Key West’s most beloved and enduring arts organizations, Key West Art & Historical Society (KWAHS) and the renegade creative forces at Coast Projects (COAST) — a pairing that offers both a timeless legacy and a raw and relevant edge with regards to the arts on the island.

So join us on the first weekend of December to dance and sing in the sun, to enjoy the fresh salt air and island breeze, and to celebrate the end of the old and the beginning of something new...

Getting Down with Duval Street Media

Getting Down with Duval Street Media

In this episode, Mark Baratto sits down with Chris Massicotte and Jamie Mattingly, the co-founders of Duval Street Media.

We talk about how they met, why they started the business, and how they are helping local businesses grow.

    More on Duval Street Media

    It all started when…

We met the way most people in Key West meet; in a bar. Chris had been in town for only a few weeks when he struck up a conversation with Jamie while she was working. He mentioned to her that he worked in Democratic politics and discovered that we both shared the same passion for political community organizing. We stayed in touch for most of the year through political circles, including volunteering to help organize the March for Our Lives in March of 2018. Chris returned to Washington to work on the 2018 election but as soon as it was over he headed back to Key West as fast as possible. After reconnecting we identified a need for good cost-effective digital marketing for the many small businesses operating in Key West and Duval Street Media, LLC was born.
