This Is Why Poetry Still Matters

This Is Why Poetry Still Matters

Chances are, you probably haven’t thought much about poetry since your school days. But poetry isn’t just for puberty. Mark McGuinness offers a new perspective. He is the host of A Mouthful of Air, a podcast that features contemporary poets reading their poems and talking about what went into their making. As a poet himself, Mark talks about the barriers preventing people from understanding poetry and how to go about exploring the genre. He explains that one doesn't have to be a full-time poet to write poetry, and details the two main ways poets come up with their ideas. He also explains why speaking poetry out loud is essential to understanding it, and why the seemingly old-fashioned art is still relevant today.

    In this episode…

Where are you on your creative journey? Whether you’re just starting to pursue your craft or you’re looking for a career shift, it’s important to remember the meaning behind your creative pursuits.

For Mark McGuinness, art is a self-expressive tool of connection and discussion. However, many artists struggle with this connection—and the criticism and feedback that comes with it—during their pursuit toward a successful creative career. That’s why Mark has spent more than 25 years coaching creative professionals on how to achieve their artistic and career ambitions. He has helped hundreds of artists build and sustain professional relationships while productively pursuing their creative goals.

In this week's episode of Pencil Kings, Mark McGuinness joins host Mitch Bowler to discuss how to take your art career to the next level. Mark shares his thoughts on finding motivation as an artist, overcoming rejection and criticism, and why business and art are not mutually exclusive. Mark also reveals the mindset shift that will help you achieve profitable artistic freedom. Stay tuned!

    163. Click Here to Be Creative: Mark McGuinness of the 21st Century Creative Podcast

Mark McGuinness (@markmcguinness) is a creative coach, a poet, and a former psychotherapist and hypnotherapist. Steven Pressfield, author of The War of Art, calls Mark an "overeducated Brit who thinks deeply about stuff you and I have never heard of."

Mark is the host of the 21st Century Creative Podcast. On the 21st Century Creative, Mark explores how to take advantage of the huge opportunities presented by the digital age. This at a time when there are more distractions than ever threatening to take you off course, and fewer traditional safety nets to catch you when you fall.

In this conversation, we'll talk about:

    • Click here to be creative: How to use mantras, chakras, – and other sometimes thought of as "woo" things – as like graphical user interfaces for altering your mental state.
    • How the feeling > action > response loop can guide your creative direction: If you're wondering how to create work that really moves people, this is the key.
    • How to use impostor syndrome to your advantage. It's a double-edged sword, or a sushi knife, as you'll see. Use it carefully.

Mark also mentioned his 20 Creative Blocks list and ebook in the conversation.
