    Every Wednesday in June & July The Truth In This Art & Station North Arts District are partnering to spotlight a sample of district-based artists to share more about their work, future projects, and how they make Station North a creative hub.

    With this podcast, Station North is celebrating its 20th year anniversary and its the recent re-designation as an arts district. 

    Located in the heart of Baltimore, Station North was the first area in Baltimore to receive the State designation as an Arts & Entertainment District in 2002. 


    Spanning the neighborhoods of Charles North, Greenmount West, and Barclay, Station North is a diverse collection of artist live-work spaces, galleries, rowhomes, and businesses, all just steps away from Penn Station, Mount Vernon, Charles Village, the Maryland Institute College of Art, the University of Baltimore, and Johns Hopkins University. 


    There are now 22 Arts & Entertainment Districts in Maryland, and similar programs in dozens of states. Station North continues to serve as a national model for Arts & Entertainment Districts.

For today’s episode, we have McKinley Wallace III, a Baltimore-based mixed-media painter and dedicated educator. McKinley's art embodies the strength of the oppressed, showcasing resilience and power within black communities. As a Master of Arts in Teaching candidate at Maryland Institute College of Art, he aims to cultivate people-oriented environments that foster inclusive community building and high-quality learning. McKinley's curriculum and studio practice integrate community-based projects, encouraging learners to invest in educating themselves and others both in and outside of school. Notably, during the COVID-19 pandemic, McKinley collaborated with a group of high school youth to create a social-distanced mural called "A Promising Future" in West Baltimore. The mural represents a safe space for non-consensus racial beings, empowering the youth to feel culturally recognized and embraced without judgment. Through his art, McKinley creates identity-affirming spaces that stand the test of time, celebrating the contributions of black people in their struggle for a promising future.

    Meet Christopher Batten, the versatile visual artist, live painter, arts educator, and muralist hailing from Detroit, Michigan. His artistic journey began at the Columbus College of Art and Design, where he later earned a BFA in Illustration from the College for Creative Studies in 2006. Christopher's dedication to his craft led him to complete the Maryland Institute College of Art's LeRoy E. Hoffberger School of Painting MFA program in 2017, where he received prestigious scholarships and awards. His artwork, both abstract and representational, delves into political issues and everyday life, drawing inspiration from his martial arts background. Christopher's captivating paintings have been exhibited in prominent cities such as Detroit, New York, San Antonio, Baltimore, and Atlanta, with notable displays at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History and Red Bull Arts Detroit. Additionally, he has honed his skills as an art educator, currently serving as faculty at Bard High School Early College Baltimore and as an adjunct professor at the Maryland Institute College of Art.     Welcome to "The Truth In This Art." I'm your host, Rob Lee. In today's episode, we have a captivating conversation with Vinnie Hager, a Maryland-based artist and designer. From a young age, his mother surrounded him with vibrant works of art adorning the walls of his childhood home. This early exposure to all kinds of art coupled with jazz influences came from his mother and worked in tandem with his father's knack for mechanical workings. This inspired him to develop his own style and in 2011 he began pursuing his own artistic vision. Vinnie is currently attending MICA, Maryland Institute College of Art, for a bachelor's Degree in General Fine Arts while also pursuing his personal artistic endeavors.
