    ABOUT THE GUEST

    Dr. Carney is Associate Dean for Public Health and Health Policy, and Professor of Medicine, at the Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont (UVM). She earned an AB from Middlebury College, MD from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and a Master of Public Health (MPH) from the Harvard School of Public Health. She previously served as Vermont’s Commissioner of Health under three gubernatorial administrations. In this role, she developed and implemented Vermont’s first outcome-based approach to improving public health, modeled on the national Healthy People initiative, combining clinical and community-based prevention. 

    At the University of Vermont, Dr. Carney developed and directed the graduate public health programs at the Larner College of Medicine, including a Master of Public Health and a new concentration in Global Health Leadership. She is the author of 3 public health textbooks, including Controversies in Public Health & Health Policy, and the most recent, A History of Public Health: From Past to Present. Dr. Carney’s areas of research expertise include building and sustaining community-academic partnerships, translational research, and reducing disparities in rural areas. She is a member of the Association of Schools and Programs in Public Health and serves as a member of the Board of Regents of the American College of Physicians.

    Asyria Daniels, MPH is a public health advocate dedicated to improving health and racial equity through community engagement, multi-sector partnerships, and research. She got her Bachelor's of Science in Health and Human Performance-Exercise Science at The Citadel while also being a NCAA D1 Athlete. She then went on to get her Master of Public Health at Georgia State University. She currently works as a Program Coordinator at The Center for Black Health & Equity.

    014: Using Public Health Skills To Work in the Intersection of Community Health & Insurance with Yasmin Kashfipour, MPH

    In this episode Yasmin Kashfipour, MPH, talks about her public health journey up until where she currently works as a Consumer Engagement Consultant for Humana. She talks about her love for both business and public health and how this role was the perfect fit for her after completing her MPH. Yasmin started off as a Microbiology Major at the University of Georgia, however she took many different classes during undergrad. Yasmin has also founded the Akbar Rasteagr Foundation - which is an Iranian international non-profit memorial foundation focused on pediatric cancer - with family. This was done in memory of her grandfather who passed. After seeing that she wanted to work in the public health field, Yasmin did her Master of Public Health at Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University where she graduated in May of 2019. During her MPH she had several roles and also had an Orise Fellowship position her second year.     Sasha Bernard, MPH sits down and chat about her journey from doing her bachelors and starting her Trinidadian NGO (Bridges to the Heart) helping to address intergenerational gaps. The then goes on to talk about her thoughts of switching from Bachelors of Biology with a focus on going to medical school to then switching and choosing to pursue her Master of Public Health (MPH) at Loma Linda University. She shares her perspectives on the differences she realized between the Trinidadian public health climate and the US public health climate. She has big dreams for her career and I'm glad i can share this part of her journey so far.

She highlights the two important transferable skills that accelerated her public health career that she learnt from ToastMasters International - communication and leadership - and how that transformed her life. She then talks about her transition to starting her own company and transferring her public health skills to the tech field. She is a true public health entrepreneur.
