Winged passions: The bat basement of Cliveden House

Winged passions: The bat basement of Cliveden House

S4E42 This week Steve joins Chris Damant in the grounds of Cliveden House on the banks of the River Thames. As fine dining takes place in the hotel above them, Chris and his team have set up traps to catch bats as they arrive to mate in the middle of the night. Underneath the south terrace are a number of rooms which mimic underground structures and its these that the bats travel to from far and wide to undertake an annual phenomenon, autumn swarming. Cliveden hosts one of the most important bat sites in the country, with eight species swarming here between August and October.

    Mating Flight, by Bard Bloom

    Mating Flight, by Bard Bloom

Hey there listeners!  Sorry this is super late, but the Dragon Host that handles the editing had to go in for unexpected surgery.  Everything is fine now, but for that we decided to delay and basically skip an episode, sorry for the wait!

This episode the dragons tackle their first book without an audio counterpart, Mating Flight by Bard Bloom.  Written in the style of the main characters journal entries, told completely from her point of view without an omniscient narrator.   This artistic decision caused some friction between us, so tune in to find out who loved it and who hated it!

The plot deals with Jyothky, a dragoness who has finally reached adulthood, going on her titular Mating Flight, which is a 12 year vacation of sorts with 2 rival females and 6 bachelor dragons, where they effectively compete for the right to mate.  some adult themes are discussed, though nothing is overly explicit.

    Lizard Push-ups and Jumping Spiders

    Lizard Push-ups and Jumping Spiders

What does it take to attract a mate? For some animals, it requires some push-ups. Other animals have a dance. And in both cases showing off some color is important. Dr. Biology catches up with biologist David Clark to learn more about his lizards and the robot lizards he has built to study these animals. The two also talk about David’s other study animal some fun jumping spiders. It turns out these eight-legged animals are fans of some movies David makes. Who knew that jumping spiders would like to watch the big screen, or in this case the tiny screen? This episode is part of a series of podcasts recorded at the Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology conference– also called SICB.

Humor, Dating, Mating, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine

I met with a current doctoral student Chloe Lloyd studying evolutionary psychology, which basically means she looks at how our current behaviors are linked to evolution. We nerded out this episode! Have you wondered WHY things are funny? Why have people struggled with online dating? What is the most important characteristic of attractiveness for men and women? What do men and women look for in sexual partners versus romantic partners? Are humans meant to be monogamous or non-monogamous? She answers all of this and much more! She also discusses her fascinating research on speed dating and the most effective types of humor in that context. This was a very interesting episode, and I cannot wait for you to listen!

Dating, Mating & Hibernating in Captivity

Dating, Mating & Hibernating in Captivity
Living through a pandemic has changed how we date, and even who we date. The very way we are relating to each other as humans has shifted and changed. A year, and more, of isolation forced us all to slow down, giving us time to focus on what truly matters. Time to think about what we want, how we want to be loved, lusted for in our relationships. So how has this year of almost no human contact affected us as individuals and in our relationships, both, casual and intimate? How has the act of finding the “one” or just “someone” or going on an actual date changed and have those changes permanently changed us? As more people are vaccinated and things open up more this Spring, are we going to rush back into our relationships, are we going to see them in a different light, or will we be looking for more? In this episode, hosts Juan and Cecile get personal as they address these questions while discussing how the pandemic has affected some of their most personal relationships.
