Will Chris Tanev make his Stars Debut tonight in San Jose? Tyler Seguin is back skating and more!
Plenty of news came out of practice Monday for the Dallas Stars and the most intriguing storyline is Chris Tanev. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey goes over Tanev and the immigration process that may keep him out of tonight's game against the San Jose Sharks. If Tanev does join the team and is inserted into the lineup, where does he fit. The Stars and Head Coach Pete DeBoer can experiment some, but they have less than 20 games to figure out what works best. Joey would like to see Tanev paired with Heiskanen to put Miro on his strong side, plus spread the wealth with Thomas Harley to another partner. The key however, is to break up Jani Hakanpaa and Esa Lindell who have the worst expected goals against rate of all pairings. We also touch on the news of Tyler Seguin skating once again and the possibility is Evgenni Dadanov being out for the season. Then we preview tonight's game against the Sharks. The beginning of a three game west coast trip begins against the Sharks that took Dallas the distance a few days ago. Joey's key to the game is Mason Marchment and Matt Duchene finding a way to be productive without Tyler Seguin. DeBoer has struggled to found someone to fill that role and he expects those two to drive the line back to success. Marchment is without a point in his last five. Finally the last segment we play shooting star! Today's pick is the young rookie Logan Stankoven, Joey has not picked Stanky yet, so he goes bold and predicts a Hat Trick at the tank! Logan Stankoven is HIM! | The Dallas Stars Fall in OT 3-2 | The must be Aggressive at the Deadline!
Logan Stankoven scored his first career NHL goal and his picked up his first career point in the Dallas Stars overtime loss to the New York Islanders Monday night. Stankoven continues to impress and that's why we open up the show celebrating him. He has been everything and then some in his first two games, and Joey explains why he must stay with the Stars moving forward and how he can have a huge impact come playoff time. We also stress the importance of the Stars being healthy, the Stars can win the Stanley Cup, but they need to be as healthy as possible to reach their potential. Plus, they need to be aggressive at the trade deadline. It was reported on the 32 Thoughts podcast by Elliotte Friedman that the Stars are being "aggressive" in search of ways to make them better including having their eyes on Calgary Flames defensemen Chris Tanev. We wrap up the show talking about Nathan Mackinnon and the Colorado Avalanche. Jake Oettinger is going to have to play lights out and hopefully they muster up enough offense to get the job done. San Jose Hockey Now Podcast #6: Michael Santos Talks Risk-Reward of Sharks Keeping Karlsson

San Jose Hockey Now Podcast #6: Michael Santos Talks Risk-Reward of Sharks Keeping Karlsson

Michael Santos joins the San Jose Hockey Now Podcast to talk about Erik Karlsson!

Santos (27:00) brings 17 years of NHL front office experience to the discussion, and brings that perspective to these questions: What are the positives and negatives of Karlsson starting the season with the San Jose Sharks?

Before we get to Santos, Keegan McNally and Sheng Peng chat about the Andy Strickland report that the Sharks offered Vladimir Tarasenko $6 million (2:55).

Why does Keegan want to retain as little as possible on Karlsson (7:15)?

Sheng and Keegan talked about the risk-reward of bringing Karlsson back (10:00). What do the San Jose Sharks owe Karlsson (10:55)? What about the injury risk (15:55)? Sheng talks to multiple league sources about the less obvious risks (17:45).

There is an upside to keeping Karlsson -- Sheng offered a couple historical examples of this (21:38).

    Now, Michael Santos (27:00)!

What is Santos hearing about a Karlsson trade (28:28)? He believes the Sharks should hold out for a premium for Karlsson.

Santos shares his career path -- from 1997 to 2014, he worked in the New York Islanders, Florida Panthers, and Nashville Predators front offices (29:20). He then gives background about the formation of independent professional scouting service, Team 33 (35:45), and what makes his hockey operations management program stand out.

Santos then explains the Team 33 Value Score (44:20), and shares Erik Karlsson, Logan Couture, Danil Gushchin, Thomas Bordeleau, and William Eklund's scores.

Santos shares why he wouldn't be concerned about the San Jose Sharks bringing Karlsson back next season (59:20). Is he concerned about the player buy-in when he doesn't want to be around (1:05:00)? Santos shared his experience being on the other side of a player wanting out: He was an Assistant GM with the Islanders when they acquired a disgruntled Alexei Yashin from the Ottawa Senators.

Santos talks about the possible upside of GM Mike Grier sticking to his guns with Karlsson (1:08:00).

Santos also shares his opinion about this wild scenario: The San Jose Sharks and Karlsson agree to a contract termination, so Karlsson can sign where he wants (1:12:10).

Santos predicts that the San Jose Sharks will trade Karlsson before training camp (1:17:45).

Finally, Santos dives into some of his brushes with Sharks history: He reveals the Islanders wanted to trade up for No. 2 in the 1997 Draft (1:19:12). He recalls being in the Dallas Stars pressbox in Nov. 2005 when the Sharks traded for Joe Thornton (1:22:05).

He also recollects the day when the Islanders traded for Yashin and Michael Peca (1:24:20).

Santos shares plans about how fans can subscribe to Team 33 (1:33:45).

    Matt Duchene and his Finger

    Matt Duchene and his Finger

Darren McFarland and Kara Hammer catch up with Matt Duchene. He discusses getting hit by a puck on his ring finger on the left hand during a game on March 26 against the Toronto Maple Leafs. Matt said leading up to that play it was his third hand injury that week and at times couldn't even hold his stick. Matt talks about how he personally dealt with the trading deadline and the moves that were made.

Darren and Kara also discuss the last game of the season being the last ever game for David Poile as the General Manager of the Predators.

    How Is This Team Winning?

    How Is This Team Winning?

We are post trade deadline and the Preds are down some big guns and we've called up a good chunk of the AHL roster to fill in the gaps. Somehow, beyond all reason, we are still winning! How?!

We discuss the impacts of Sherwood, Novak, Leonard, and Evangelista as the Preds looking to be giving it their best shot to make into the playoffs as a young and scrappy team who are putting on good, fun hockey!

It's Been Nice To Jeannot You!

It's Been Nice To Jeannot You!

It's been a whirlwind weekend for the Preds. First up, we learn David Poile is retiring as GM and Barry Trotz is taking over come July.  Will the team shine under Trotz or will it continue to be mediocre?

The NHL Trade Dealine is looming and the Preds have been in the mix, the big news being the blockbuster trade with Tampa for Tanner Jeannot. Will the Preds look at trading Ekholm and maybe even...Saros to rebuild the team?

    Bruce There It Is

    Bruce There It Is

Bruce Boudreau was fired from the Canucks in a less than stellar fashion from the Canucks on Monday after being behind the bench for only 14 months. The Canucks loss is another team's gain. The Preds would do good to take a look at the bench boss players and fans love and compare him against Hynes and his current system.

The Preds are on the outside looking in and despite a "competitive rebuild" and "embracing the youth movement", Hynes has done little to help the team become the team we know they can be. Do the Preds take a hard look at bringing in Bruce in the off-season or do we continue to flounder in middle as we have done for years now?

Thanks for listening! If you enjoy the show, be sure to follow us on Twitter and subscribe to us on YouTube! Until next time, we'll see you on the ice!

    Yo-Yo

    Yo-Yo

We are nearing the half-way point of the season. The Preds seem to be on a yo-yo as they keeping moving and back forth away from a wildcard spot in the playoffs. Meanwhile, we also have the All-Star game approaching and Juuse Saros will be representing the Preds. Also, Eeli Tolvanen seems to be thriving with the Kraken. Excuse us while we go on a rant to the mishandling of Tolvanen in the Preds system.

Thanks for listening! If you enjoy the show, be sure to follow us on Twitter and subscribe to us on YouTube! Until next time, we'll see you on the ice!

    Flooding

    Flooding

The Preds played a shorter schedule thanks to Bridgestone arena being flooded by a major downtown water leak. Despite less games, we finally seem to be seeing some consistently. Defense lines are good, goalkeeping is good, and scoring is being spread out amongst all the forward lines, and we talk about the possibility of seeing Eeli Tolvanen (RIP) and Dante Fabbro being trade targets.

Thanks for listening! If you enjoy the show, be sure to follow us on Twitter and subscribe to us on YouTube! Until next time, we'll see you on the ice!

    Home Stand

    Home Stand

The Preds recently completed a home stand, grabbing nine out of 10 points. Has the team finally found their groove? We've seen Forsberg doing Forsberg things and players such as Roman Josi, Matt Duchene, and Nino Neiderreiter stepping up their games and new comers such as Jusso Parssinen making a big impact.

Have the Preds finally found their groove or will we spend the rest of the season playing catch up to the rest of the Central in hopes of making the playoffs?

Thanks for listening! If you enjoy the show, be sure to follow us on Twitter and subscribe to us on YouTube! Until next time, we'll see you on the ice!

    Identity Crisis

    Identity Crisis

We are five more games into the season. The Preds started a five game road trip across western Canada and the Pacific Northwest. With an always strong Central Division, the Preds need to figure out their identity. We've seen line blenders almost each game and well known players such as Tolvanen, Carrier, Glass, and Fabbro getting scratched.

They embody the "Smashville" moniker, but as Edmonton proved the other night, skill and speed are what make championship teams these days. Can the Preds figure out their identity before it's too late and find themselves on the golf course in April?

Thanks for listening! If you enjoy the show, be sure to follow us on Twitter and subscribe to us on YouTube! Until next time, we'll see you on the ice!

    The Preds 22-23 Season Begins

    The Preds 22-23 Season Begins

The NHL 22-23 season has begun for the Predators. We are seven games and we only have two wins...but on a different continent. Fans are already calling for Hynes to be replaced and in some cases even GMDP himself. Is this an overreaction to a slow start or do we continue to see this happen during the season?

We also discuss the off season signings by the Preds, the new reverse retro jerseys, the Coyotes playing at ASU this season and much more.

Thanks for listening! If you enjoy the show, be sure to follow us on Twitter and subscribe to us on YouTube! Until next time, we'll see you on the ice!

    Roman Josi for Norris

    Roman Josi for Norris

We are into the final month of hockey and the Preds are poised to either make it or break it. A win over Ottawa should be a given and give them some help, but Dallas is hanging in there and it will come down to the wire.

Roman Josi should be the default Norris candidate at this point. He's having a recording breaking season not only team wise, but league wise as well. Does he get it or does the hockey world bestow it upon Cale Makar, who is second to Josi in every way this season?
