G. Russell Case: Western Oil Painter - Epi. 251, Host Dr. Mark Sublette
I had a Russell Case on the podcast today. I'm such a fan of his artwork. He captures the Southwest in a way that few others do.
In this podcast, we delve into what it means to paint and how he tries to paint like how a musician makes music, which is a very interesting concept to me. We cover the struggles that he had to go through to get where is today and how all of these experiences, while difficult, made him a better artist.
Russell will be the first to tell you that it doesn't happen overnight. We had a long discussion about what it takes to become a professional artist. I think Russell's words in this podcast are valuable to painters of all skill levels and I enjoyed it a lot. Russell Case on episode 251 of Art Dealer Diaries Podcast.

Bill Rey: Owner of Claggett/Rey Fine Art Gallery (Part 2), Epi. 172 - Host Dr. Mark Sublette
I had gallery owner Bill Rey on the podcast today and we spoke for quite a while, so this will be a two-part interview. This is part two.
Bill is a very interesting guy who I've known for over 20 years. He's been in the art gallery business for almost 40 years, having started when he was 18 working with a Squash Blossom Gallery in Aspen, Vail, and Denver.
This is a fun interview - especially for those people who're really interested in the history of the art business, dealers, and artists alike because Bill has an encyclopedic recall of all these artists that he's worked with and the places he's gone with them. We learn about Bill's background before art and go in-depth about Bill's relationships with the likes of Jim Reynolds and Robert Lougheed (both of which are amazing Western artists).
It was a very fun time and Bill's such a character that he even had a Medicine Man Gallery shirt made to wear during the podcast. That's just the kind of guy Bill is.

Ep 352: Last Night In Soho
Head downtown with us as we fall through the looking glass of Edgar Wright's "Last Night in Soho"
The neon signs are pretty, but does this deep red giallo infused mystery earn its final act or are we too mesmerized by Wrights dazzling stylistic flourishes to even care?

Bill Anton: Western Oil Painter - Epi. 170, Host Dr. Mark Sublette
View Bill Anton's newest painting "Stirrup Deep" here:
https://www.medicinemangallery.com/bill-anton-stirrup-deep-plv1341.html
Now, I've done a long-format podcast with Bill, but you know, he brought this painting in that we just got for the gallery and it's such a fantastic painting. It's one of those really inspirational works that when you stare at it long enough it just grabs you and pulls you in and boy did this painting grab me.
So I thought, you know, let's just go do a podcast and see what happens. Talk about the painting, talk about what's going on in Bill's life, stuff like that. Surprise, surprise - It turned into a wonderful conversation. We spoke about all different types of artists, from Maynard Dixon to Jim Reynolds to Matt Smith to Josh Elliott.
This is more technical in some respects because we really talk about composition and how somebody goes about turning a study into a fully formed painting, which is what Bill did with the painting that brought him to the gallery in the first place.
He's such an animated individual and loves what he does. I would encourage you to watch this one on YouTube if you can because just watching his body language, how he gets excited about what he does, and why he does it, in turn, makes you excited.
