For the past several decades, Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams -- both together and separately -- have lived a life on the road performing music across the country and around the world. Now over the past several years, this lovely couple has been playing music and traveling together, touring behind their new album, Live at Levon's!, representing the special time they have spent over the years at the iconic Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, NY. Larry is a gifted in-demand sideman originally from New York City, while Teresa is an extraordinary vocalist who came to NYC as an actor and singer, and eventually toured as a backing vocalist with legendary acts such as Mavis Staples, Emilou Harris, Jackson Browne and Bob Weir. Larry is a noted record producer, toured as a guitarist in Bob Dylan's band for many years and was the Musical Director of Levon's Midnight Ramble Band for over a decade. Their musical lives are a tale of time spent on the road -- and now their paths have converged allowing them to create music and tour together. Their combined knowledge of road life and shared love of live performing serves as the constant impetus in their lives and they are here to share their wisdom about life, love and what is all means to them both individually and as a couple. Come share Larry's and Teresa's love of music and road life on this week's episode of Roadcase!

“I still have every bit of my voice,” says singer and civil rights icon Mavis Staples. “It’s still here, and I’m still here.” Throughout her career, Mavis has used her voice to uplift the truth through song, and after seventy years, she has no interest in slowing down. This year Mavis is on tour throughout the US and Europe, and on May 20th, she will release a new album, Carry Me Home, recorded with The Band’s Levon Helm. On this episode, Hanif speaks to Mavis about the album, why she won’t be retiring anytime soon, and the secrets behind the longevity of her career—including how Mahalia Jackson taught her to take care of her voice. Carry Me Home was recorded at Levon Helm Studios. The Studio is a barn designed and acoustically engineered by Levon himself, and it stands today as a one-of-a-kind musical landmark. Levon Helm Studios welcomes artists for intimate concerts, recording sessions, rehearsals, writing retreats, and private events.
On May 20th, Mavis Staples will perform at Brooklyn Academy of Music, as part of the spring music series curated by Hanif. Amy Helm, Levon Helm’s daughter, will open. You can follow Mavis’ full tour this year on her website.
Every Thanksgiving, Hanif watches the Last Waltz.

Odetta Holmes was an American singer, actress, guitarist, lyricist, and a civil and human rights activist, often referred to as "The Voice of the Civil Rights Movement".
Odetta was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on December 31, 1930. As an important figure in the American folk music of the 50s and 60s, she influenced many of the key figures of the folk-revival, including Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Mavis Staples, and Janis Joplin.

One of the biggest and best voices in Australia, is Emma Donovanâs. As a little kid, Emma got a heap of practice in with her family band. The Donovans were a legendary country group, and whether her uncles were pushing her to the front of the stage to sing, or her mum was plopping her in front of crowds at Tamworth talent quests, her soulful voice was honed over years of family support and self belief.
Emma would go on to form the Stiff Gins, sheâd release solo records, join The Black Arm Band, then collaborate with Melbourne soul outfit The Putbacks. Â Through it all, her love of music and family has guided her. From Mavis Staples, to Christine Anu, and the Koori King of Country â Roger Knox â this is a beautiful conversation about the bonds of music, family, and place.

Micko Donovan - Promised Land
Roger Knox - Bridge Over Troubled Water
Troy Cassar Daley - Back Home Again

The world's been turned upside down by the Thanos-snap of COVID-19, the president continues to defy logic & good sense at every turn, and the horrific & inexcusable death of George Floyd reverberates throughout the world with a louder-than-ever dialogue about police brutality, police reform & systemic racism that will hopefully bring about some long overdue change.
It's gonna be a long walk home from all of this, but nobody has to go it alone.
With that in mind, we spin songs of protest, songs of unrest & songs of revolution on this week's show from The Isley Brothers, Bob Mould, Public Enemy, Lucinda Williams, Tom Morello, Bruce Springsteen, Mavis Staples & Bob Dylan, among others. We also spend quality time with the brand new Run The Jewels record.
