S3 E11 | The Ultimate Use Case for DAOs w/Aaron Soskin

S3 E11 | The Ultimate Use Case for DAOs w/Aaron Soskin

On this episode of Rehash, we sat down with Aaron Soskin, founder of Govrn. Govrn is a DAO contribution platform designed to enable DAOs to be defined by their contributors. By recording your contributions and allowing other DAO members to attest to those contributions, you can maintain ownership over your work and keep an on-chain record of the value you provide to DAOs.

In this DAO forward episode, we cover a variety of topics from rage quitting and politics to the ways in which Govrn can help DAOs and their contributors. Aaron stresses the importance of DAOs being defined by the emergent properties that arise as the result of contributors providing value, and we discuss how Govrn allows contributors to own their work and get more meaningful validation for the work they do. We discuss the pros and cons of rage quitting, and Aaron explains why he’s a rage quit maxi. He also explains why it’s important for DAOs to enable divergence and convergence and shares that rage quitting doesn’t have to be permanent.

We later explore the human aspect of DAOs and discuss the nuances of decentralization, acknowledging that technology can’t solve all human coordination issues. We discuss DAOs in the light of politics and what that intersection could look like. We acknowledge the recent events (FTX) and discuss what the future may hold for DAOs in the coming months and years - agreeing that not all DAOs need to be permanent.

Aaron closes with speaking so passionately that his mic crumbles, starting SexySongDAO, answering some fun questions, and leaving  listeners with how to get started using Govrn.

Chain Reaction x Equity talk the Ethereum Merge

Chain Reaction x Equity talk the Ethereum Merge

If you are into web3, the biggest news of the week in tech was not the massive Figma-Adobe deal. No, the leading story of the last few days -- arguably even the last few weeks -- has been the Ethereum Merge.

The Merge, an upgrade to the Ethereum blockchain that moved it from a proof of work (PoW) to a proof of stake (PoS) system of consensus was a long-awaited shift that finally took place this week. And as the change in technology is expected to reduce the carbon footprint of the popular blockchain by ~99%, we had lots to get into.

    https://techcrunch.com/2022/09/15/now-that-the-ethereum-merge-is-behind-us-whats-next/

But we didn't just want to riff on the startup angle, or the web3 perspective, because the Merge had huge implications for crypto as an industry and its place in the world of emerging tech. That's why we got together our startup and blockchain podcast teams for a collab episode to hit both angles: Anita and Jacquie from Chain Reaction, and Natasha and Alex from Equity. This also gave us a 50-50 TechCrunch-TechCrunch+ split, which was good fun.

We started by setting the scene with how the anticipation around this monumental event in web3 has affected token prices and dug into what factors had been fueling optimism. Then we broke down the mechanics behind why proof-of-stake is greener, but may be less decentralized than proof-of-work (though each us had different takes on whether that's a fair assessment).

Pulling off the Merge was an event requiring such technical coordination and rigor that it's been compared to the moon landing. Now that it's happened, what will be the impacts on web3 startups? What about the rest of the tech industry, or large financial institutions, or Chinese crypto miners? We walked through all these questions and more, trying to address both what the Merge is and why it matters through as holistic a lens as possible.

Just as there are tons of different stakeholders affected by the Merge, who all think differently, so do we. This episode had lots of back-and-forth as the team unpacked some quirky pieces of crypto jargon like the term "baker" and what it means in a proof-of-stake ecosystem as well as the timeline of what comes after the Merge, which includes the Surge, Verge, Purge and Splurge. No joke -- we explain what those mean in this episode.

We'll do more of this sort of thing as time goes along, thanks to some welcome resource bumps to our production crew (huge shoutout to Grace, Theresa and Maggie).

For more on the Merge, required reading can be found here, here, and here. Onward!

Equity drops every Monday at 7 a.m. PDT and Wednesday and Friday at 6 a.m. PDT, so subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify and all the casts.

Chain Reaction comes out every Tuesday and Thursday at 12:00 p.m. PDT, so be sure to subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Overcast and Spotify to keep up with the action.

Credits: Equity is hosted by TechCrunch's Alex Wilhelm and Mary Ann Azevedo. We are produced by Theresa Loconsolo with editing by Kell. Bryce Durbin is our Illustrator. We'd also like to thank the audience development team and Henry Pickavet, who manages TechCrunch audio products.

    Episode #54 with Akin Soyoye

    Episode #54 with Akin Soyoye

On the latest episode of the podcast, I chat with Akin,  the creator of Ibilecoin, a decentralized financial payment network within cryptocurrency that rebuilds the traditional payment stack on the blockchain.  Akin discusses why he decided on creating an indigenous token and why it was built on the Cardano blockchain.  We delve into the historical and cultural importance of the Benin Ivory mask, the visual inspiration behind the 'Ibile' face.

We talk about the importance of financial decentralisation, recreating value within blockchain.  We also talk about Charles Hoskinson, Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin, and the devaluation of Fiat currencies.  Akin is also on a mission in educating people, especially within Africa to adopt crypto.

With a background in Political Science & diplomacy History, Akin shares his passion when it comes to educating people of the tragic cost of post and neo-colonialism, but also the relevance of Pan-Africanism.  We also bring up certain socio-economic issues affecting Nigeria, and of course, he shares with us a quote that continually inspires him.

In his own words, Akin is a Pan- African at heart and in deeds.
