Wrapping up our “Folk Around and Find Out” triple feature, join us as we brave the Stonerich Cavern in Ken Russell’s loose (in more ways than one) adaptation of Bram Stoker’s pagan horror novel, THE LAIR OF THE WHITE WORM, starring Peter Capaldi, Amanda Donohoe, Hugh Grant, Sammi Davis, and Catherine Oxenberg. The film is a surreal and visually stunning horror-comedy based on the legend of The Lambton Worm. We discuss the connections between the ancient pagan beliefs and the cyclical nature of life and the power of nature over humanity. On May 1, hundreds of workers marched in the streets of St. John’s and rallied at Harbourside Park. May Day hasn’t been a huge deal in Newfoundland and Labrador, or even in Canada, where we mark Labour Day in September. But the growing number of workers and allies joining the annual event in St. John’s tells us something important about this province’s labour movement, says journalist Rhea Rollmann.

In Episode 8 of berrygrounds, we speak with Rollmann about what changes are happening in Newfoundland and Labrador's labour movement. Rollmann, who also has a background in labour organizing and queer and trans activism, also shares some insight into her forthcoming book, "A Queer History of Newfoundland".

In honor of May Day (celebrated world-wide on May 1st), we bring you four stories about workers organizing and unionizing around the country. First, we’ll start in our own backyard: New York City. We dive into the world of  food delivery workers and their efforts to legislate the delivery apps that push them around the City. Next, we’ll move upstate to and look at farm workers fighting for more overtime pay before turning to the Texas Service Industry Coalition. Finally, we’ll end this episode in San Francisco with Anchor Brewing. The brewery is over 100 years old and ratified its very first union contract in 2019. 

Although not officially recognized in the United States, May Day has its origins in America. On May 4th, 1886, workers gathered in Chicago’s Haymarket square to rally for an eight-hour work day. But a bomb was thrown into the demonstration, and several were killed. May Day commemorates the tragedy of the Haymarket Affair. But really, it celebrates every fight for better working conditions.

BrownTown starts by reflecting on some August 2020 events in Chicago -- jail support training, recent actions, and give reminders on how to stay safe at protests, especially with heavy police presence. Caullen and Taylor provide background on growing up together and being radicalized during the Iraq War and fallout of Hurricane Katrina. The gang then unpack the differences between Labor Day, the hand-picked, pacified holiday, and May Day, a homage to the Haymarket riots in Chicago and struggle for workers' rights.
