Mark Williams (Fat Freddy's Drop) - Altbays Table Talk #245

Mark Williams (Fat Freddy's Drop) - Altbays Table Talk #245

What’s your favorite Fat Freddy’s Drop tune? Mark Williams, aka MC Slave, is a prolific broadcaster. He serves as the MC for Fat Freddy’s Drop, runs a weekly show on 95bFM, is the station voice for Flava Radio in Auckland, and is highly involved in the film industry, also directing music videos. Mark comes to the ALTBAYS Table Talk for a chat, joined by the legendary DJ Bobby Brazuka from Latinaotearoa who also owns of the iconic Ponsonby Social Club.

Show 245 – Mark Williams (Fat Freddy’s Drop)

Welcome to the Altbays Table Talk (feat. Bobby Brazuka and Leo Magri)

Mark James Williams aka M.C. Slave/ aka Uncle Mark aka Logg Cabin has touched on, and triumphed in, most areas of the media during a career that has spanned the best part of three decades.

Born in California and raised in Aotearoa, Mark first emerged in the public eye as the Slavish half of proto hip hop duo MC OJ & Rhythm Slave. Transitioning from youthful energy overload to a more considered, politicised approach, they developed into Joint Force in combination with long time compadre DLT. Slave found his eventual ideal musical home with Wellington troubadours Fat Freddy’s Drop, carving out a position as their much celebrated hype man/tour MC since 2006.

As well as providing the live lyrical fire and crowd incentivising for FFD, Mark has also warmed the stage up for them all over the world as a DJ / Selector. Mark holds down the weekly 2pm -4pm Sunday sweet spot as host of the Logg Cabin radio show on 95BFM. The Loggcabin has become a veritable institution. Building his chops in the 90s on 95bFM’s True School Hip Hop Show and later Drive, as well as contributing to the early momentum of Base FM, and George Fm, M.C. Slave has spread his audio amor far and wide on the airwaves.

Mark is also the station voice of Flava Radio in Auckland, making him one of the country’s most recognisable and trusted voices. On the small screen with the MO Show, Mark and crew took New Zealand out to the world and returned with an award winning riot of interviews, sketches and thoroughly anarchic TV - the likes of which will probably never be seen again. As well as appearing on a multitude of TV shows and feature films, invariably cast as ‘the bad guy’, he has also made waves behind the camera, most notably directing Fat Freddy’s Drop's legendary Wandering Eye clip which won Best Music Video at the 2006 Vodafone NZ Music Awards.

Mark is joined by the legendary DJ Bobby Brazuka from Latinaotearoa, and owner of the iconic Ponsonby Social Club for a historic show!

ALTBAYS Table Talk invites awesome people from Aotearoa to have an honest, laid-back conversation. Our platform focuses on bringing communities together to grow and thrive.

The art of the MC — Julia Zemiro and Brian Nankervis talk about hosting and MCing

For 15 seasons and 181 episodes, Julia Zemiro and Brian Nankervis have been the dual hosts of 'Rockwiz', bringing their wit, charm and performance energy to Australia's legendary music quiz show. In this episode Tony chats to them about what makes a good MC, and they share tips and yarns from several decades of hosting big events.

In the second half, Tony's 12 year old son Jack joins the conversation. He's a big fan of Julia and Brian (and Rockwiz), and fancies himself as a bit of an MC himself. He prepared some questions for his heroes, and it's a lovely and funny end to the episode.

We are delighted to present our special guest today, Gary McGrath. Gary is a renowned deep freediver, holding the British National Record and serving as an instructor in this exhilarating sport. In his favorite discipline, monofin (CWT), Gary achieved an astounding record of -112 meters on a single breath. This remarkable feat was accomplished during the summer of 2022 at the prestigious Vertical Blue freediving competition in the Bahamas, often referred to as the Wimbledon of freediving.

In this episode, we delve into profound topics.  We engage in an open conversation about mental health issues and depression, subjects rarely discussed among athletes who consistently perform at their peak. Gary's philosophy on deep freediving, characterized by a strong emphasis on safety, has developed over 15 years and is viewed as a lifelong journey. His gradual approach included a leisurely descent to -100 meters to celebrate his 40th birthday last year, preparing his mind for the eventual national record. Now, he stands poised for even greater achievements.

Additionally, we provide valuable training insights, including Gary's preferred supplements to maintain peak physical condition during intense training and effective warm-up techniques you can incorporate into your routine.

It is our honor to introduce you to Gary, a person we deeply respect, a cherished friend, and a guiding mentor. Gary possesses one of the most resilient mental fortitudes in the world of freediving.

    Life-Changing Relationships | Circles (Part 4) | Stephen Feith

    Life-Changing Relationships | Circles (Part 4) | Stephen Feith

Have you ever seen the Disney movie "Finding Nemo?" "Finding Nemo" came out 20 years ago. For those who haven't seen the film in 20 years, it's about an overprotective dad clownfish whose son gets taken from him. The dad goes on the adventure of a lifetime across the ocean, looking for a son.

Meanwhile, the lost son finds himself at a dentist's office in Sydney, Australia. The other fish freak out when Nemo, the little fish, is thrown into the fish tank at the dentist's office for the first time. Their home is not sterile anymore. The other fish scrub everything, including Nemo, because their space has been tainted by the ocean. After they clean everything up, they're actually happy Nemo's there. They're excited they've got a new friend in the tank.

This scene is fascinating. How often is it that when someone comes into our "circle," we initially freak out? Think about the Christian Church. We have buildings, and they're lovely. Then someone new comes in, and we know we should be excited because we read in the Bible that Jesus is excited. But everything is set up the way it should be to us, and new people mess that up...

So we try cleaning the outsider up politically or religiously, or socially. We've got to ensure that they don't say bad words. We've got to verify they're listening to the right music and only watch the TV shows we watch. But that's not how Jesus lived.

Jesus is the God of the ocean. Jesus didn't live in a sanitized tank. Jesus went to where all the people were, where life happens. He lived among them, and he did life with them. That is the example we are supposed to follow. And now it's our turn. As we follow Jesus, we're gonna see other people find and follow Jesus. It won't be because any of us are super saints. It'll be because we keep our "circles" open.

Do that however long it takes. However long you have to be a friend. And even if they don't choose to follow Jesus at any point, love them anyway because Jesus loves them until the end, even if they reject him.

That's the most challenging part of this study. I believe God has put people in and around our lives that he loves deeply and dearly and died for. You don't have to be a super extrovert. There are many people in our lives whom Jesus loves and has been working through. Our task is to keep our "circles" open.

Think about your family "circle." It's always open. Somebody has
