Dr Doug McGuff - Why You Should NOT Bulk Up (#161)

Dr Doug McGuff - Why You Should NOT Bulk Up (#161)

Dr Doug McGuff (Instagram / YouTube) is the co-author of Body by Science: A Research Based Program for Strength Training, Body building, and Complete Fitness in 12 Minutes a Week and The Primal Prescription: Surviving The “Sick Care” Sinkhole.

Doug practices full-time emergency medicine with Blue Ridge Emergency Physicians and owns, Ultimate Exercise, where he and his instructors continue to explore the limits of exercise through their personal training of clients. Doug is one of the leading experts in high intensity strength training and provides consultancy services to help you achieve your health and body composition goals, setup a home gym, or start a HIT facility HERE.

This episode is Doug's response to Should I Bulk Up (#157). In episode 157, I described how I was feeling insecure about my physique and embarked on a calorie surplus alongside my training regime to attempt to stimulate more muscle growth. In this latest episode (#161), Doug describes precisely why he thinks this is a bad idea.

This is one of the most important episodes I've published on the pursuit of optimal muscle gain and strength training over the long term. If you are a hardgainer or been doing HIT for a long time, you will find this enlightening, hilariously honest and very helpful. I am so excited and honoured to be able to bring you this.

"By the time we get to where we are .... I think what you experience is .... stimulus, recovery, nothing. Stimulus, recovery, nothing. Stimulus, recovery, nothing. Stimulus, recovery, nothing. Stimulus, recovery, nothing. Stimulus, recovery ... then suddenly something happens."

    ~ Dr Doug McGuff

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • How gaining body fat can potentially reduce muscle mass
    • How perhaps calorie intake should be organic
    • The truth about Doug's own genetics and training failures (this will shock you!)
    • How to spot if you're over training
    • … and much, much more

This episode is brought to you by ARXFit.com, ARX are the most innovative, efficient and effective all-in-one exercise machines I have ever seen. I was really impressed with my ARX workout. The intensity and adaptive resistance were unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I love how the machine enables you to increase the negative load to fatigue target muscles more quickly and I love how the workouts are effortlessly quantified. The software tracks maximum force output, rate of work, total amount of work done and more in front of you on-screen, allowing you to compete with your pervious performance, to give you and your clients real-time motivation.

As well as being utilised by many HIT trainers to deliver highly effective and efficient workouts to their clients, ARX comes highly recommended by world-class trainers and brands including Bulletproof, Tony Robbins, and Ben Greenfield Fitness. To find out more about ARX and get $500 OFF install, please go to ARXFit.com and mention Corporate Warrior in the how did you hear about us field – ORDER HERE

#118: Dr Doug McGuff on Workout Volume and Frequency, Neck Training, Exercise Science, Entrepreneurship, Cryptocurrency, and Relationships

Dr Doug McGuff (@DougMcGuff / Instagram: ultimate_exercise_) is frequently labeled as one of the world's top experts on exercise and in particular, high intensity strength training. Doug practices full-time emergency medicine with Blue Ridge Emergency Physicians and owns, Ultimate Exercise, where he and his instructors continue to explore the limits of exercise through their personal training of clients. Doug regularly posts his exercise thoughts and findings on his blog and YouTube channel, and provides consultancy and other products and services via DrMcGuff.com.

Doug’s popularity exploded with the release of his ground-breaking book, Body By Science, which he published with John Little. Soon after, Dr McGuff and Dr Robert P. Murphy published The Primal Prescription: Surviving The “Sick Care” Sinkhole, an expose on medical care, how to get the best care when you really need it, and a prescription for wellness, longevity and personal accountability.

This was an eclectic episode that touched on a number of different areas. As this may be the last interview I do with Doug for a while (he's incredibly busy), I took this opportunity to go beyond strength training to talk about things like investing, cryptocurrency, success and even relationships. Doug provides a very intelligent and thoughtful perspective on all of these topics and more. I look forward to listening to this interview again and again. I hope you will feel the same.

This was one of the most profound conversations I've had in my entire life.

    In this episode, we discuss:

    • Entrepreneurship
    • Workout Volume and frequency
    • The Placebo Effect
    • Neck training (machine vs manual resistance)
    • The practical application of scientific literature on exercise (and in general)
    • Cryptocurrency
    • What calorie surplus is required for optimising muscle gain?
    • Extreme fat loss and losing that "last bit"
    • Relationships with women
    • The ultimate reading list
    • ... and more :D

#74: Heart Attack Victim to Body Builder - Richard Chartrand

#74: Heart Attack Victim to Body Builder - Richard Chartrand

This episode is a little bit of an experiment. My guest is Richard Chartrand. Richard is not a trainer and he does not own a big health and fitness business. He is student of HIT and has been a HIT proponent for 35 years. Richard was featured in Holiday Thanks, a popular article written by Dr Doug McGuff in 2009, which explains how Richard may have single handedly revitalised the HIT movement with his amazing physical transformation following cardiac surgery. Richard documented his transformation on drdarden.com under My Progress after Cardiac Surgery.

Some of you have been asking for an interview with a trainee for some time. Richard shares what he has learnt in his pursuit of optimal health and fitness, and I think many of you will find this very interesting and useful.

    Contact Richard:

    In this episode we cover:

    • Richard's story of his inspiring training journey and the severe health scares which inspired him to pursue a short career in body building.
    • How Richard's training protocol has evolved over time.
    • How he wants to prove John Little wrong ;-)
    • and much more

This episode is brought to you by Hituni.com, providers of the best online courses in high intensity training that come highly recommended by Dr. Doug McGuff and Discover Strength CEO, Luke Carlson. Course contributors include world-class exercise experts like Drew Baye, Ellington Darden and Skyler Tanner. There are courses for both trainers and trainees. #9: Adam Budnik on the Benefits of High Intensity Strength Training, How to Get Started in HIT and Flavanoids

Adam Budnik is a highly knowledgable and experienced HIT personal trainer. He's been training clients for 7 years, and spends most of his time learning how to optimise health through exercise, lifestyle, and nutrition.

Adam is a dear friend of mine, and I have been lucky enough to learn from him over the last 2 years during my time training at Kieser London.
